LOCAL EPers: Two of my favorite local up and coming acts, who also happened to be related to friends, both released EP's recently. Hegazy, the twin sister duo comprised of Leila and Omnia, and who are nieces of my longtime friend Diane Tarantino Hegazy, have put out a four-song EP, their first as a band, Young. It contains their first two singles, the #1 "Alive" and the #2 "Here to Stay", along with two other tracks. Since there hasn't been another official single or video announced, I am going with "Smolder" as the new entry, it's the Top Debut this week at #73. It's another song that has become their style: Sultry, laid-back jazzy song with rough and forceful lyrics. Another winner for the duo. Finally, Foster The People gets its eleventh straight top 20, as "I Love My Friends', the fourth single from Sacred Hearts Club, moves 25-20. Incidentally, the prior single, "Sit Next To Me", which drops off the SNS 100 this week, is gathering stream on the pop chart, perhaps they may have another big hit to complement their 2011 monster "Pumped Up Kicks". It still has a while to go, however, and I may consider re-adding the song, which peaked at #12 here a few weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Offguard, the five-piece Long Island-based emo rock act fronted by Matt Weiss (the son of friend Annette Weiss), released their first EP as well. The six song set includes their recent SNS top 5 "Strawberry Moon", and I have plucked the song "Tension" which debuts at #82. The set has all sorts of moods to it, from the pop-rock of "Strawberry Moon" to the hard-rocking "Hidden Messages", the title track, there's something for everyone. The track I added, "Tension" is an acoustic gem that shows off their softer side.
Also debuting are two bands that have seen success on my blog recently. Iration, the reggae-band from Hawaii which scored here with "867" and "Borderlines', both #3 SNS hits, are back with "Press Play", which is another pop-reggae flavorable romp. Meanwhile, Lake Street Dive, which hit the top 10 in 2016 with "Call Off Your Dogs", return with "Good Kisser". The band, led by Rachael Price, hails from Boston.
