Tame Impala still not so "tame" (SNS week of 4/15/2019)

A quiet blog this time after a few comprehensive weeks...

The Black Keys grab their fifth #1 song on my list this week is "Lo/Hi" ascends to the top spot.   It's their first SNS chart-topper in over four years since "Weight of Love" from their most recent Turn Blue album.   It breaks a three-way tie with Rachel Allyn and Adele for second place all time (well, at least since August 2010 when I started the blog), although well behind Fitz & the Tantrums' 11.

We now know the name of the Keys' new album.  It's called 'Let's Rock', and will be due out in June. And as with keeping up with recent trends, a new single, "Eagle Birds" has been released, even though "Lo/Hi" hasn't run its course.   "Lo...." has only amassed five weeks here and is still bulleted at #3 on Billboard's Alternative chart, and just reached #1 on the Triple-A (Adult Album Alternative) survey as well.

Last week, I mentioned that the Keys were set to play at Woodstock 50, the weekend that marked the fiftieth anniversary of the original gathering, but had to back out due to a "scheduling conflict".   However, that remains a mystery, as, looking at their concert schedule, their tour to support 'Let's Rock' doesn't start until September 20 in Las Vegas.   Interesting.

"Lo/Fi" knocks out The Kooks' "Chicken Bone" after one week at the top, in spite of the song still bulleting here.    So, how long will "Lo/Hi" stay at the top?   It's a strong mover, but three songs appear poised to make that run rather brief:   Lil Peep's "I've Been Waiting" (8-3), Fitz & the Tantrums' "123456" (18-6) and Nick Waterhouse's "I Feel An Urge Coming On" (33-10) are lurking.   Aside from Waterhouse, three other songs debut in the top 20:   Florence + the Machine's "Moderation" (25-16), Dreamers' "Die Happy" (21-17), and Wild Belle's "Mockingbird" (30-19) enter.

The Top Debut is by Tame Impala, with "Patience".   The psychedelic rockers from Australia have three studio albums to their credit, and will be releasing an as yet, untitled set later this year.  The band, headed by Kevin Parker, are no strangers to my blog, having placed three songs within my top 20 and are favorites with fans who are primarily in classic rock but keep an eye on the current scene.   "Patience" is no exception.    They remind me of a very obscure 90's band called Fossil.   Rich in instrumentation, with sentimental vocals, and a bit of phase shifting.    Four sets in, the sound is still fresh.   Unlike some of the bands I follow, as mentioned above, people are taking notice of this band.  Their last album, Currents (1995) reached #4 on Billboard's album chart.    Let's hope that this set makes some noise, but so far, no chart action.  Their best showing thus far?   A #8 Alternative with "Elephant" form their debut Innerspeaker (#11 here on SNS).   Their best here was the #5 achieved with "Let it Happen" (from Currents). And yes, they've already released another single, "Borderline" (will all you bands cut that out?  LOL).  But "Borderline" is also a cool song, with a danceable beat.    But, in due time....in due time.

BRIEFLY, OTHER DEBUTS:  Bebe Rexha has another pop hit with "Last Hurrah", her prior single, "I'm A Mess" reached top 20....Molly Burch follows her #8 "Torn to Pieces" with the satisfying "Candy"...…MISSIO's alternative hit "I See You" is added here, it's their first on SNS; they are a duo from Austin TX....New Jersey's Donna Missal had a massive hit here with "Keep Lying" late last year.  The single was actually released in 2015, but her album came out in late 2018.   While I'm in the dark about future song releases from it, the album, This Time, contained several prior single releases after "Keep Lying"; I am going with "The Keeper" this week, which retains some of the blues influence of the prior hit......I caught Sam Fender on one of the network morning shows, the British singer-songwriter has his first SNS song with "Hypersonic Missiles"....finally James Bay is back and getting Hot AC play with "Peer Pressure" which features Julia Michaels.   Bay's "Pink Lemonade" reached my top spot last June..
