Teddy Swims Achieves Dual #1's on Billboard, SNS (SNS week of 3/24/2024)

 IT TOOK 32 weeks, including the last several zigzagging up and down the top 5, but this week, "Lose Control" by Teddy Swims finally hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.    It thus sets a record for the longest climb to the top spot by a solo male artist.    The song also moves back to the top spot here, after spending three weeks at #2 on the SNS 100.   It becomes the 14th song since my blog started in August 2010 to hit #1 on both the SNS and Billboard Hot 100 charts, and the first since Miley Cyrus' "Flowers" achieved the feat a little over a year ago.   While "Flowers" missed being simultaneously being at the top of both lists by one week, Swims' song becomes the tenth to do it at the same time, and the first since Steve Lacy's "Bad Habit" in late 2022.    

Teddy Swims (L) and Charlotte Sessions continue their battle for the #1 position.   Swims heads both this week's blog topper and on the Hot 100.    The artists have been 1-2 on SNS for six weeks straight.

Since "Lose Control" actually hit number one on the blog four weeks ago, it's the first time in recent memory that a song hit the top of my list before it hit Billboard's.   As I mentioned up front, it took 32 weeks for the song to top Billboard; and while I waited 21 weeks to add the song on the SNS 100, it reached my top in only six.

This was Teddy Swims' first song to chart on Billboard, but he topped the beach music charts two years ago with "Blowin' Smoke".   That song reached #60 on my blog chart, and he also made my playlist via duets with Thomas Rhett and Meghan Trainor.   

The re-ascension of "Lose Control" moves Charlotte Sessions' "I've Fallen For a Dragon", back to #2.   That makes six straight weeks that these songs have been 1-2 on my chart:   Ms. Sessions' song originally spent two weeks at #2 behind "Lose Control", before taking the top spot for three weeks, in which Swims was #2.

The top five hold positions, with Cage the Elephant, Starbuck, and Suki Waterhouse bulleting in the top 10.   Jalen Ngonda's "If You Don't Want My Love" is the only new Top 20 entry, thus gaining Impact honors (24-18).  

BROWNING BLITZ (CONTINUED):  Meanwhile, just outside the Top 20 is last week's Top Debut, Deb Browning's cover of "Put Your Hand in the Hand", the Mover of the week (48-22).   Another song from her new album Give Me Gospel, "Chain Breaker" moves 37 to 29, while "Think I Found Forever", breaks the 50-week mark, still hanging on at #92.   It's the sixth song to break the 50-week barrier.  If the song holds on one more week, it will tie her prior solo single, "3 More Minutes" for fifth on the all-time longevity list.

Finally, coming up on April 3, her new song with Marlisa Kay Small will be previewed, which you can catch the premiere on 94.9 The Surf out of North Myrtle Beach) at 1:30 PM, Internet station Riptide Radio at 3 PM, and WOHS (Shelby, North Carolina, AM 1390 / FM101.5), at 4:08 PM. 

NEW ADDS:  As this is late yet again, a quick recap of new songs added this week.   It's led by New England indie band Eavesdrop's "Honest".   Eavesdrop is a seven-piece band who I had that pleasure of catching live a few years back.   Their song "Alive" reached #4 in early 2022.   A great vocal with a bit of a Fleetwood Mac flair to it, it's very heartfelt, and should return the contingent to the Top Ten.

Beach music artist Sylvia Johns Ritchie enters with "Good Love Don't Come Easy".  A production full of ambience, with horns and cool background vocals and Sylvia's voice is strong.    It's beach music at its best.   Ms. Ritchie has been on my chart before, often in duets, but this is her best solo shot at the Top Ten.    Great job!  

Lainey Wilson is one of my favorite country artists these days, and heck, we named our new doggie after her, and while I just couldn't get into "Wildflowers and Wild Horses", her new one "Country's Cool Again" is more of a hoedown and she delivers a tour de force that should return her to the Top 20.   She means business.

Zach Bryan's duet with Kasey Musgraves, "I Remember Everything" was the last of four straight country #1's on the Hot 100 last year, and after 30 weeks, it's STILL in the Top 10 on the big chart.   While it only reached #58 here and lasted just ten weeks, I may consider re-adding it.   Meanwhile, Kasey herself enters with "Deeper Well".   It's a down-to-earth introspective song that gets a bit more intimate while moving along.    The last Ms. Musgraves solo song added to my chart, "Justified" reached #4 here, so she's been here before, and could revisit the upper reaches with this one.

Beach outfit Randy Clay Band follows up their top 40 cover of "Wildflower" with "Party Street", a mix of rock and beach as the guitars kick in at different times.    Cigarettes After Sex had back-to-back blog Top Ten's in 2021 with "K" Apocalypse", the dreamy El Paso contingent debuts with "Tejano Blue".  Again, very dream poppish, it might take a few listens to appreciate the laid-backness of the song, but it has the goods.    Finally, K.Flay's "Carsick" is a mix of alt-rock with hints of Billie Eilish overtones.   Has a chance.

UPCOMING:    I plan on taking a one-week hiatus coming up, but I will try to get in the March 31 chart in sometime this week.
