GLASS ANIMALS' "Heat Waves" drops a notch on the Billboard Hot 100, from #20 to #21, but that's enough to stay on the chart for 91 weeks. That breaks a record for most weeks on the big chart, just set last year by "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd. That song had the record of 90 weeks, and as such, was now anointed the #1 song of all time by Billboard, knocking out Chubby Checker's "The Twist".

What is cool about "Heat Waves" was that it was by a band considered "alternative rock", a genre that pretty much has been forgotten in this day and age, as far as "crossing over" onto the pop charts is concerned. Unfortunately, the band had to sell out a little bit; the song has more of a pop/hip-hop feel to it, which perhaps endeared it to those kids who constantly stream music.
"Heat Waves" hit #1 on the alternative chart back in March 2021. The song didn't do quite as well on my blog playlist, rising to #32 in the late spring of that year in a 25-week run, although it was their biggest blog hit to date. The song continued its rise on the Hot 100, hovering in the teens during the rest of 2021, before rising into the top 10 earlier this year. Despite the follow-up, "I Don't Wanna Talk (I Just Wanna Dance)", more of an alt-rock groove, hitting my top 10 as well as a hit on alternative radio, it didn't, as per usual, make the big chart. It was in the spring that "Heat Waves" set a record for taking 57 weeks to hit #1 on Billboard. It enjoyed a second run on my playlist as a result, totaling, tacking on another eleven weeks for a total of 36 weeks on the SNS 100 for the two runs.
Since hitting #1 on Billboard, it has slowly descended, hovering in the top ten well through the summer, and then reluctantly dropping into the teens.
So, now that the record has been set, can "Heat Waves" make it on the chart for 100 weeks? Chart rules state that songs are removed from the chart if they drop below #25 for stays of more than 52 weeks. However, it's going to be very tough to do, for the same reasons that did "Blinding Lights" in. Although there are 11 chart weeks left in the year, and the song needs only 9 of them to get into triple digits, there is one snag.
There have been memes going around this past week about enjoying "Halloween because she's defrosting right now". The meme has a faint picture of Mariah Carey in a Santa suit which simulates ice melting. In other words, it's soon time for the annual onslaught of "All I Want for Christmas Is You', which has hit #1 the past three holiday seasons. Plus, about 25 or even 30 holiday songs invade the Hot 100 in recent years. Last year it was enough to force "Blinding Lights" off the charts after ninety weeks, and I believe that song stood at #19 in its final week. "Heat Waves" is vulnerable enough to be forced out as well; it might make it to 97 or 98 weeks at best. Stay tuned!
ANOTHER 'HABIT': Steve Lacy's "Bad Habit" stays at the Top of the Billboard Chart for a third week, but it also rises to the top of the SNS 100 as well. That makes the song the second entry to top both lists this year, and the third in the past twelve months. It joins Adele's "Easy on Me" and Harry Styles' "As It Was" as songs that hit #1 on both lists within the last year. "Bad Habit" (not to be confused with Ed Sheeran's 'Bad Habits") is the twelfth song to top both lists, and the eight to do it simultaneously.
The song forces The Black Keys' "It Ain't Over" to #2 after two weeks at the top for the duo's eighth blog topper. Carolina beach music grabs four of the next five, as Carolina Dreamers hold at #3 with "Hey Girl Hey Boy", Starbuck advancing to #5 with "You're the Reason", Carolina Blue Dots falling from 4 to 6 with the former #1 "Cruzin' Down the Boulevard", and Bubba D. Liverance's "In My '64" moving from 8 to 7. Juliet Callahan advances 5-4 with the alt-rock leaning Burning", to break the shag streak.
The top 17 here remain the same, except for some minor jostling for position, with Jennifer Cintron, who performed last month at Roselle Park's Arts Festival, garnering Impact honors with "Run", the song is similar to the Juliet Callahan song and could be the next blog trend. But beach music will have much to say about that, as Rick Strickland moves 31-19 with "You're the One For Me", and the latest by Deb Browning and Six Piece Suits' "It Don't Get Better Than This", last week's Top Debut, grabbing Mover status with a 57-22 rise.
DEBUTS: Six debuts this week, led off by the latest by Mitski, "Should've Been Me". The Japanese-born songstress hit #3 earlier this year with "The Only Heartbreaker". The new one is very catchy, set to a vintage Motown-style beat and her voice is in fine form. The song should top her recent #34 "Love Me More" which deserved better.
Also debuting is yet another from Alvvays, "Belinda Says" which seems to be the definitive track from their Alpha Rev album, giving them three songs on this week's chart. This one, a tribute of sorts to Belinda Carlisle of The Go-Go's is in their jangle/alt pop lane. One of their three entries, and with all the buzz they've been getting should pay off, with hopefully at least one of the songs scoring on the charts.
Also added is the latest from Paramore, "This is Why", a song that full of sound yet quirky at the same time, their best in some time; Ceramic Animal, making its blog debut with "Valerie" (not the Steve Winwood song...or the Monkees for that matter), the song, while alternative, has 70's-era guitar overtones, a la The Faces, mixed in with some new wave for that matter. May click with a few listens.
While "Burning" moves up in the top five, I added Juliet Callhan's latest "Ghost Girl" in time for Halloween. A more (appropriately) haunting song with more hip-hop overtones than her last one, but still may make some noise. Ms. Callahan has been actively promoting the song on her Instagram and Facebook pages. Last is this week's beach music entry, "Stand By Me" by Larry Chance and Billy Vera, two names entrenched in music history. Larry Chance was a member of doo wop group The Earls, whose "Remember Then", was a Top 30 hit in 1962; Vera is probably best remembered for his #1 "At This Moment" as part of Billy Vera and the Beaters, in 1986; but has also been around since the 1960's, both solo and in duets with Judy Clay. The Ben E. King classic has gotten a fresh new take here, in spite of both artists having been around for ages. Has possibilities.
FINALLY: I've been watching the latest season of The Voice. As I have said before, while there is plenty of talent on the show, the focus has always been on the coaches. This season, they consist of the returning Blake Shelton and John Legend, the recurring Gwen Stefani, and newcomer Camila Cabello. Shelton, who recently announced that next season will be his last on the show (he's been there from the beginning), is currently at #55 with "No Body", (also on a beach music list or two). His blog best was the #11 "Boys Round Here". Meanwhile, his wife Gwen Stefani, who also fronted No Doubt, landed at #6 here in early 2016 with "Used to Love You". Legend's best showing was the #85 "All Of Me" in 2014, although he's also appeared in duets with Carrie Underwood, Meghan Trainor and sometimes-coach Kelly Clarkson. As for Cabello, while her big hit was "Havana", her blog best was the #14 "Never Be the Same" in 2018.
The series is currently in the second round, the "Battles", so along with the four coaches, each of them has "mentors" to help the contestants with their delivery and style. I couldn't help to notice that two of them---Sean Paul and Jazmine Sullivan---are both on my SNS 100 as featured performers. Paul is featured on the current #8 song with Ellie Goulding, "Easy Lover", while Ms. Sullivan is on Curtis Harding's latest, "Our Love", which peaked a few weeks ago at #44 and currently at #62. Jimmie Allen and Charlie Puth are the other mentors.

In last week's blog about The Six Piece Suits, I had mentioned that the band's guitarist Nicky Hooks was introduced to Deb Browning, but I neglected to mention who introduced them.
