Hello again. Another quick blog as I attempted to catch up into the beginning of June. For the first time in two years, I made it back to Roscoe, NY, the trout fishing capital of the world, although I don't profess to have a rod or reel (keep those jokes to yourself, lol). But I got together with fourteen of my buddies, some of them doing this since 1980. The weather was cooperative much of the weekend, until Sunday morning when we had some rain, but by then, we were going to head on home anyway.
Not really much in the new music department again, but I enjoyed listening to many friends' playlist. I had my fifteen hour Roscoe playlist going on Thursday the 24th, a combination of old and new things going on. But the others took their turn, with all kinds of stuff from all different eras. My friend Anthony Josephs' songs were much like mine, combining some 2010's stuff with classic rock.
Tennis remains in the top spot for a fifth week with "Modern Woman", but it's a tight race at the top, with Amy Shark just one point behind with "Adore", moving 4-2. Swimming With Bears, and Nick Waterhouse are just two points behind Amy, in the 3 and 4 positions. In an era where nothing that is getting airplay is resonating with me, it's interesting that three of the top four are not or have not been on any Billboard chart.
As we are now in the unofficial summer period, it's time to keep an eye on my 2018 "song of the summer", and getting a top ranking early in the season is tantamount to getting this year's honor. Aside from the above (and the Waterhouse song, "Straight Love Affair" which moves 10 to 4 this week is aiming to duplicate his 2017 honor "It's Time", which is still on the list, by the way), there are some big movers: Curtis Harding's "Need Your Love" (19-8), Neko Case's "Bad Luck" (21-10), and James Bay's "Pink Lemonade" (15-6) are the early front-runners, but don't discount The War On Drugs' "Pain" (26-16) or Florence + the Machine's "Hunger" (38-22) either. Hopefully, if I get back into new music, with many events on my calendar, it could have some sort of impact. It's Case's third SNS top 20 and second top 10; she was previously here with "People Got a Lot of Nerve" (#8, 2010) and "Man" (#14, 2013).
As for new music this time, I had two more pop hits: Bruno Mars' "Finesse" and Zedd's "The Middle" which features Maren Morris and the electronic music duo Grey. Both have been fixtures on SNS before, and with Bebe Rexha, Charlie Puth, Camila Cabello, and Calvin Harris moving up, pop music is sort of making a little comeback here, at least in small doses. Also added are the Union County NJ-based Doughboys with "Sink or Swim" from their EP of the same name, Baltimore dream-pop mainstays The Beach House with "Lemon Glow" and Morgan Saint from Long Island with "Just Friends", her first entry on SNS.
