The Revolving Door (SNS Week of 6/17/2018)

REVOLVING DOOR:   Another week and another number one on my SNS chart which doubles as a playlist for my iPod (yes, I still use one of them).   This time it's Neko Case taking charge with "Bad Luck".  It's her first chart-topper here and her third top 20 entry, following "People Got A Lot Of Nerve" and "Man".   The catchy song is from her fifth solo effort, Hell-On.  She has cooled off since her 2009 peak with Middle Cyclone which peaked at #3 on Billboard's album chart; the current set only reached #31.  What I remember most about the 47-year old singer/songwriter is that when I posted my Top 100 of 2009 on Facebook (my first year-end list since 2003), and the first on social media which was a precursor to this blog, was that friends noted I left out her songs on that list.   Naturally, I went back and listened to that album and added "People Got a Lot of Nerve" (which I erroneously referred to a few weeks back as "Maneater"), and it peaked it at #8.   Case is getting some moderate airplay with her current set, but it took off here to the point where it is this week's chart topper.

Right behind is Curtis Hardings' "Need Your Love" which is just a few points behind.   Will we see another new number one next week?  Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, the top 10 is still very competitive; in fact positions 5, 6 and 7, hold steady with bullets (indicating a significant point gain).  In the case of The War on Drugs' "Pain", and Phillip Phillips' "Magnetic", it does so for the second straight week.   The biggest jump, however is the 27-9 rise of Kungs vs Cookin' on 3 Burners' "This Girl", the 2016 track I heard at Martell's a few weeks back.

KILLER B's :  Three artists beginning with "B" enter the top 20:  Mid-Hudson valley reggae act (The) Big Takeover, Beck, and Bishop Briggs.   It's the fourth top 10 for TBT, and fifth for Beck, and the second solo top 20 for Bishop Briggs, although she was featured on Cold War Kids' #1 "So Tied Up" recently.

TENNIS, ANYONE, PART FIVE:   The Top Debut is "My Emotions Are Blinding", yet another single from the duo Tennis' album Yours Conditionally.   The set, which failed to make any impact, is an awesome album, and this is the fourth song, all released as singles, I have added from it.  It follows the #1 "Modern Woman".   The new song, which enters at #65, echoes their "Origins", their #1 SNS songs from 2012, to an extent.   Alaina Moore's vocals always seem to chill the spine.  Another winner there.   Cigarette After Sex's follow-up to "K", "Apocalypse" is another awesome song, possibly even better than the former, which peaked at #9 and is still at #20 this week.

TELEVISION TIME:  I also, as indicated a few weeks ago, added the 'coronation songs' of the two recent winners of the music competition shows, American Idol and The Voice.   The "Idol" winner, Maddie Poppe, "Going Going Gone", enters at #96.   She won season 16 of the recently-revived show.    Trent Harmon, the winner of season 15, made #6 with his song, "Falling", although he hasn't followed that song up, nor has he released a debut album yet.   Before that, you have to go back to season 12, in which Candace Glover went to #29 with "I Am Beautiful", but that song only made a brief appearance on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking only at #93 which was at the time, an all time low.   The last "successful" winner of "Idol" was Phillip Phillips, who has two SNS top 10's from his latest ("Miles", #6) and the current "Magnetic" at #7), his first top here (his coronation song, "Home" went to #11 here).  But even his new album sold poorly.    Of course, "Idol" has made major stars out of Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and a few others.

I also add The Voice season 14 winner Brynn Cantelli, who was on Clarkson's team.  While many Idol contestants have dotted my chart over the last eight years, the highway has been very empty for Voice winners.   The show, despite its popularity (mostly because of the banter with the coaches), still hasn't produced a superstar.    The only singer from that show that has made a dent on SNS was Vicci Martinez, who finished third in that shows' first season.  She reached #3 in 2013 with "Come Along" which featured her team coach on that show, Cee Lo Green.    Ms. Cantelli's coronation song "Walk My Way", enters at #94.
