When life gets in the way, things get pushed to the side, and thus once again is the case with this blog. While it my seem I am abandoning this, it's just a matter of devoting time to it, and with a night job and catching up on sleep during the day and weekends (when I do have off), it leaves very little time for listening to new music.
For this period of time, I was on a cruise to the Bahamas. Leaving Port Liberty in Bayonne, NJ on May 11, we traveled down first to Port Canaveral Florida on the 13th, to the island of Coco Cay in the Bahamas on the 14th, and to Nassau on the 15th, returning home on the 18th. There was, of course, music played, mostly new danceable music on the deck, but a reggae band, Men of Culture provided some nice sounds of the tropics during our time on the ship. There of course was a lot of music trivia, but unlike the last two cruises, I didn't win anything. One featured the 50's and 60's, another the 70's, yet another the 80's, and one focusing on Michael Jackson.
There was music blaring over the speakers on the ship, mostly songs from the 2000's onward, including some current ones, such as Alice Merton's "Roots". However, there wasn't anything new to rally around, thus my SNS 100 this week isn't that earth shattering.
We have a fourth week for Tennis, as "Modern Woman" holds at the top and the top 4 remain steady from the past week. Merton's new single, "Lash Out" is the Top Debut this week, another fine effort from her. A driving rhythmic beat with a touch of soul define this one. She sounds a little less like Florence Welsh this time around and more of her own. A worthy add.
Bleachers follow up their SNS #1 "I Miss Those Days", with "Alfie's Song", a pop/rock song complete with cool harmonies. Some of the verses are half spoken (it sort of reminds me of Camper Van Beethoven in a sense). New to SNS is Car Seat Headrest, a four-piece band from Leesburg, Virginia. Their sound is raw and even retro-sounding, with hints of various eras very apparent. I think of them as a cross between the Byrds and Weezer, if you can picture anything like that. They've actually been around since 2010, but only during the last couple of years and albums have they been making inroads. Jade Bird is a singer/songwriter from Northumberland, England, with a hint of country, but her song "Lottery" was firmly in the alternative range; the song has already been #1 on Billboard's Triple-A chart. Finally, I add two pop songs, Imagine Dragons' "Whatever It Takes" and Calvin Harris & Dua Lipa's "One Kiss".
