Santana's "Blues Magic", which had a two-week stint atop the SNS 100, then dropped to #2 while The Hounds of Winter's "Oh Paige" had a three week run, comes back to the top. I think it's the longest time a song that had hit #1, then dropped out, and then returned to the top spot. "Oh Paige" drops to #3, while Michael Kiwanuka's "One More Night" takes the 2-spot. Paul Czekaj has yet another top 10 with "A Place I Once Called Home" at #9, and a big jump for Miike Snow's "My Trigger" from 24-10; it's the band's second top 10, "Paddling Out" hit #5 in 2012. The only other top 20 entry comes from New Jersey's The Doughboys, "For Your Love", thus it's the first time a band "discovered" at the WNTI Stage festival has made the upper part of my chart.
There are a few big movers on the list, including Sam Roberts Band's "If You Want It" (46-23) and the topical "Bad Hombres, Nasty Women", the Mover of the week from 67-37. Some big national hits are finally catching on with me, albeit a bit late: "Heathens" by Twenty-One pilots, which had peaked at #2 nationally for several weeks and at the #1 spot on Billboard's Alternative chart forever, is finally making a move (62-41), it is catchy and it is still considered rock with a hip-hoppish flair, I had heard it on the radio in a deli I was at the other day. The Chainsmokers' song with Daya, "Don't Let Me Down" is on the move as well (40-24). The follow-up "Closer", now in double digits at the top of Billboard's Hot 100, is due to debut in the next blog issue; with their Phoebe Ryan-featured "All We Know" still advancing, the Chainsmokers could have three songs bulleting up the next issue.
Some up-and-comers rule the debuts this week. Shannon Marsyada, who as part of the Shannon Marsyada Trio who I saw perform at the Jim Thorpe Fall Festival in 2013, hit #1 with "What You Do To Me", is back with a solo endeavor, "The Ends of Me" from her new album of the same name. The sound is indie-ish and has a Melissa Etheridge feel to it, a bit of a change from her band's prior hit...worth checking out. In the same vein is Christina Alessi, making her first appearance on the SNS 100. She is from Northern New Jersey and I did get catch a gig with her band Hey Tiger a few years ago. She now fronts The Toll Collectors, but this number is her solo effort. It's a bouncy thing that it's easy to get your feet tapping and getting into. A great indie sound from her. Incidentally, her brother Phil had made my top 20 back in 2011 as part of Dark Sacrament with the speed-Metalish "Realm of Unlight"; her sister's song is much, much more listenable and should top her brother's band's peak position of #19.
Two veteran bands, Jimmy Eat World and Two Door Cinema Club, enter, and finally the top spot goes to The Knocks and Matthew Koma. The Knocks are an electronic production duo in the vein of Calvin Harris and have worked with, or remixed, hits by Carly Rae Jepsen, M83 and X Ambassadors. This one features Koma, who is no stranger to SNS readers; his "One Night" and "Parachute" reached top 20, and he once dated Jepsen. Also look for a Koma solo single "Kisses Back" in a few weeks, which should double up his presence.
