Swift, F.O.B. lead Hot 100; SNS 100 Respectively, WBL Top Debut (SNS week of 10/22/2023)

A late blog, so this will be brief, as I had spent seven days down in Florida visiting friends and getting back to the normal swing of things.

First up, Taylor Swift's "Cruel Summer", which toiled in the top five for months but never able to hit the top, finally does so, thanks to a couple of remixes.     There seems to be a big hype regarding Ms. Swift these days, what with her appearance at a recent Jets/Chiefs game, as her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, plays for the Kansas City team.     Of course, her "Eras" tour headlined many arenas and stadiums, which included MetLife Stadium, where the Jets play.   On the SNS 100, the song, which peaked at #4 a few months ago, rebounds 40-31.

Meanwhile, over on my chart, it's Fall Out Boy's "We Didn't Start the Fire" holding at #1 for a fourth week.  That's the longest reign at #1 for a non-Carolina beach music song since "Dance the Last Goodbye" by Anna Lavigne also tallied four weeks at #1 in late 2021 and early 2022.    It lengthens its lead over SZA's "Snooze", which holds at #2 for a third straight week.   Black Pumas, Starbuck and Record Company round out a very competitive top five.  Lainey Wilson inches into the top 10 with "Watermelon Moonshine".  Two alt/Triple-A acts, The National and The Revivalists, enter the top 20 with the Impact-winning "Eucalyptus" and "Good Old Days", respectively.

Everybody Loves An Outlaw's "I See Red" grabs the Mover of the Week honor with a 58-38 move, while last week's Top Debut, "I Think It Was Over" also moves big (49-29).

Winnetka Bowling League as the Top Debut this week with "Breakfast For Dinner", entering at #60.

DEBUTS: Leading the adds at #60 is the latest from Winnetka Bowling League, "Breakfast For Dinner".  It's been a short while since we last heard from Matthew Koma and company, and it's for the better, as the band's last few singles fell short of the mark.   But the new one, which just features the band, is a return to the up-tempo sound of songs like "Kombucha", but with a decidedly Emo type of feel, along the lines of a Bowling For Soup or early Weezer.   It should return them to the upper reaches of the SNS 100.

Next is British singer Barns Courtney with "Young In America".    Courtney has had a few mid charters on SNS, plus a #12 song, "Fire" in 2016.   This one has emotion and rocks rather hard in an alt-rock sort of way.    One of his best to date.

Bakar has had much blog success, and his latest is "Alive".   A rather eclectic delivery on this one but is always moving.  Grouplove follows the mid-charting "Hello" with "Cheese", this is another alt-rock gem with Christian Zucconi's vocals in rare form.    Band hasn't had a big song---blog or otherwise since 2012's "Tongue Tied", but has consistently made the SNS 100 since then.

Turning to the Carolina coast, Sylvia Johns Ritchie is an accomplished beach music singer, but it seems she works best when part of a duet.    That is certainly the case as she teams with The Holiday Band's Mike Taylor for "Goin' Down Swingin'".   This is a great boogie song, with a soulful flair, about getting out on a Friday night and having a great time.   A carefree song is already a hit on beach music charts should make good inroads here.

Gary Lowder and Smokin' Hot are coming off a top ten blog hit with "Picture of You", currently at #14, but I go back to a 2015 recording of "Sitting In the Park" for a blog follow-up.    This is a cover of Billy Stewart's classic from 1965 which I've been playing a lot lately, and this version holds up very well to the original.  The keyboard solo in the middle part of the song is bone chilling.  As was the case with the Christina Cooper Black and Carolina Blue Dots, I've been going back a few years to unearth some gems that I may have missed coming from the Grand Strand.

Rounding out the debuts are Royel Otis' "Sofa King".  The band scratched the chart this past summer with "Oysters In My Pocket", but the new one is vastly better.   It sort of has a Grouplove feel to it, and has alt-rock instrumentation and credibility and should perform better than the previous entry.
