This is one of my patented "double issues" encompassing the weeks of October 8 and 15. It will be brief.
SNS 100: Fall Out Boy's remake of Billy Joel's 1989 Hot 100 #1 song, "We Didn't Start The Fire" holds off charges from SZA's "Snooze" (#2) and The Record Company's "Talk To Me" (#3), to hold for a third week at the top of my chart. The song, which updates the lyrics of Joel's original to events from 1989 to the present, is also #5 on the alternative airplay chart and is on the Hot AC listing as well. As it is a rock song, it's not currently on the Hot 100, although it did make a brief appearance a few weeks ago at #94, but it is a fixture on several airplay formats.
I had mentioned a couple weeks ago that this is the fourth remake of a former hit this year, and that it never happened before in the 12+ years of this blog. But I forgot Maneskin's cover of the Top 20 Four Seasons hit from 1967, "Beggin'", which spent a couple weeks at the top two years ago.
Black Pumas' "More Than A Love Song", currently #1 on the Triple-A chart jumps 8-4, and Starbuck's "On the Sand", which debuts this month on the Beach Music Smokin' 45 Chart, advances 7-5.
For the first time, both reggae bands that originated from Hawaii, and now based on the West Coast, are in the top ten at the same time. Pepper's "Get Me Ready" moves 11-7, while Iration's "Daytrippin'", a former #1 here and in the top 30 on the alternative chart, drops 5-8. Reggae gets a third entry into the top 20 as King Tappa inches 21-20 with "One Day". Beach music songs "I'll Be Around" with Michael McMeel and Marlisa Kay Small, and Gary Lowder and Smokin' Hot's "Picture of Your" round out the top 10.
In the second ten, aside from King Tappa, we have the Impact award "Angry" by The Rolling Stones (22-14), "Should I Be the Man" from hometown singer Charlotte Sessions (23-18), and "Desire" by Cannons (27-19).
Further down, there is a big move by Carolina Blue Dots' "Under the Moonlight", last week's Top Debut, moving 71-27.
DEBUTS: Several new entries this week, led by the latest from Orbis Max, "I Think It Was Over". Culled from their just released, self-titled album, this cool, heart-wrenching ballad will rival their "R U OK". A little more rock-oriented than that song, and sung solely by Dw Dunphy, the keyboard backing supplements Dunphy's voice to a "T". The online band should score another big blog hit here. It debuts at #49, the highest debut on the chart in quite a while.
Another strong debut is a song that came out in 2017, but thanks to a cool cover by a contestant on The Voice, it jumps on the list at #58. "I See Red" had an awesome version by Nini Iris a couple weeks ago on the singing competition show. Last year, the song was also performed on another such show, America's Got Talent, by Kristen Cruz. However, it's the original version by the Everybody Loves An Outlaw, which is comprised by the duo of Bonnie and Taylor Sims. This is the ultimate blues ballad which is one of the genres that is straight up my wheelhouse. The vocal is belted out with so much passion, and is somewhat reminiscent of Brittany Howard (who, incidentally, has a new song coming out).
The Holiday Band is coming off their beach hit and top 40 blog hit "Happy Music" with "Drowning In the Sea of Love", a fresh take on Joe Simon's 1971 R&B and pop smash. Very soulful and a new dimension is added to the original. The Front Bottoms have had two song that just scratched the SNS 100, but "Emotional" has already topped them both at # 88 debut. This is a cool, alt-rock throwback to the early 1990's, complete with fuzzy guitars and angst. Should make inroads.
Sir Prize and the Twomorrow Knightz reached #12 with "Automatic Satin Circus". The "band" created by Tim Izzard and Gregory Dobbins, is an ode to Saturday morning cartoon "groups" in the late 60's early 70's mixed in with glam rock of that era as well. A new single, "Arthurian Rhapsody" takes that concept one step further. This one tackles that bubblegum Saturday morning sound with a bunch of sound effects, spoken word and sung passages, with sort of a medieval self-promotion to form one very unique song. Interesting, indeed.
John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band follow their top 20 blog and beach hit "Day In the Sun" with "Send a Little Message To You". Think "Da Do Ron Ron" crossed with "Spirit In the Sky" done Jersey Shore style.
Rounding out the debuts are the blog debut from Gus Dapperton, "Horizons". Dapperton's real name is Brendan Patrick Rice and he hails from Warwick NY. A nice, middle-of-the-road rock ballad here. Finally another stage name, City and Color (actually Dallas Green) enters with "Underground". It's the third entry on my blog chart for Green; the first two, "Lover Come Back" (2015), and "Wasted Love" (2016), both hit top 10. Another nice, heartfelt mid-tempo and could click as well.
