HELLO EVERYONE: Well, September has been a very rough month healthwise for me. This time it's vertigo and high blood pressure. At my age, I guess it could be commonplace! It's October 1 as I write this, so it's very late, thus brief. I do have a few issues to talk about though.
FALL OUT BOY'S cover of the 1989 Billy Joel #1 song, "We Didn't Start the Fire" hits the top of the SNS 100 this week. It's the second blog topper for the Illinois quartet, following 2019's "I've Been Waiting", which featured the band, along with lead acts Lil Peep and ILoveMakonnen, which went on to lead the 2019 year-end list. The song is also top ten on the alternative airplay chart this week.
Last week's #1 song, Iration, drops again to #2. The song is also on the alternative chart fighting to grab a stronghold in the top 30. Another former #1, The Tonez' "Caught Up" drops to #3.
SZA's "Snooze" inches up to #4. More importantly, the song jumps up to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. SZA also debuts at #1 on that chart, featured on Drake's "Slime You Out", so it's apparent that after several weeks that country prevailed, hip-hop has returned, as that song replaces Doja Cat's "Paint the Town Red", which drops to #2 on the Hot 100; it moves 66-55 on the blog list.
The Record Company's "Talk to Me" moves to #5. The top five songs on the SNS 100 are closely bunched together that anything could happen next week. Meanwhile, new to the top ten are two beach music songs rooted in the 1970's. Michael McMeel and Marlisa Kay Small's "I'll Be Around" moves 11-9 and Starbuck's "On the Sand" goes 13-10. McMeel was a drummer for Three Dog Night in 1974-76, and the song is a cover of a Spinners hit from 1972. As for Starbuck, that band, led by Bruce Blackman (who has carried forward the group name as a solo act), hit in 1976 with "Moonlight Feels Right".
New to the top 20 is the Impact winner, Black Pumas' "More Than A Love Song", while two beach acts enter: Rivermist's "Right Place Right Time", and Jim Quick and Coastline's "Eight Four Three".
STILL ROLLING: The Rolling Stones' "Angry" gets the Mover nod, with a 67-42 jump. Sadly, I had to miss Roselle Park's Arts Festival (held September 30, yesterday as I write this). Charlotte Sessions, who performed at the festival's Library Stage, jumps 54-36 with "Should I Be The Man". Hopefully I can get a video of the performance. From all indications, the festival went well, and after several rainy days, it dried out in time for the performance.
SHOUT OUT: In the wake of naming Orbis Max's "R U OK" as the Song of the Summer, I saw that there was an article posted on that band's Facebook page ("Orbis 2.0") an article that appeared on the New Jersey Stage website, interviewing the Internet band's leader, Dw Dunphy. Last week I mentioned that although the band is officially "based" in San Diego, members were from all over the country and even in the U.K. That included Red Bank, NJ, but what I didn't know is that is the home of Dunphy himself; thus, Orbis is technically from my state!
In the article, which coincides with the band's new, self-titled album, due today (October 1, as I write this), Dunphy mentions how the band came together, that it was rooted way back in the 1970's, and how the current version of the band came about. Dunphy also talks about the key track "R U OK", and does a shout-out to my blog. (A big thank you for that, Dw!).

Beach music singer Christina Cooper Black grabs the Top Debut with "I Miss You Babe". The track, released in 2021 is an ode to her late husband, Tommy Black. |
ADDS: Just a few this week, but the Top Debut goes to "I Miss You Babe" by beach music artist Christina Cooper Black; her first solo effort on SNS. Ms. Black was one of the Carolina Queens but is also an accomplished singer in her own right. Christina cut this song back in 2021, but I was unaware of it until I saw it listed as "bubbling under" on the John Hook's Beach Music Top 40 list. One listen and I was in awe of the song. "I Miss You Babe" is an ode to her husband Tommy Black, who sadly passed away a few years back, as well as others who the beach community lost recently. It's a mid-tempo, sentimental song and very heartfelt, while keeping the beach beat intact. Awesome production by Tim Sidden (Cat 5, Deb Browning, Marlisa Small, Carolina Queens, et al), puts a finishing touch on it. I wish I had known about the song in 2021, but thanks to Christina's Queens performance (and friending me on Facebook), I will give this one quite the run.
Also debuting is The Killers' '"Your Side of Town". While this band, noted for "Mr. Brightside" as well as being the first band to hit the blog #1 spot in just three weeks with a holiday song, has had a new lease on life on the alternative chart in recent years, it's only had middling success on the blog chart. However, the new one, which recalls New Order's 1987 synth-hit "True Faith", has that requisite steady beat, could break that "slump".
Entering also is the latest from Devon Gillfillan, with "Love You Anyway", the follow-up to the blog top ten "All I Really Wanna Do". Assisted by Sammy Rae & the Friends, his soulful take is melded with a gospel feel as well.
Entering in the Tremors section are the latest by L7, the all-female band popular during the grunge-era with songs "Pretend We're Dead" and "Andres", are back with "Cooler Than Mars"; the band hasn't lost its swagger. Dacey, a female singer-songwiter who has been getting airplay on Vermont's alt-station WEQX enters with "If We Never Try", with a relaxing beat and background harmonies to support her cool vice; and finally Big Thief's "Vampire Empire".
