Maybe you've heard a song recently played on the radio. Or maybe you're just thinking of a song at any particular moment. And, suddenly it is going through your head like crazy. It could be a new song, or an old one, yet it goes through your brain regardless of when you heard it.
For me nowadays, it's usually an old song from my past. And it usually breeds a Facebook post of the song from You Tube, in an effort to "let it out of my head".
The reason for saying all this is that I took a long weekend off, from Thursday July 19 onward thru Sunday the 22nd. The reason is because of my other "obsession", geocaching, which if I haven't mentioned it in a prior blog, is somewhat of a "high-tech scavenger, or treasure hunt", using multi-million dollar satellite technology to find a hidden "Tupperware container", magnetic key holder or some other container. I had ventured up to Pittsfield Massachusetts for that weekend as there was something called the "Berkshire Geobash", a series of events that gather many of us enthusiasts together with our common interests. There were many events, some held outside, like at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA), which included hanging outside in a cool area, complete with a live band and a mix of cachers and non-cachers. Another, was a "coffee & donuts" thing on Friday morning at a roadside pull-off. And then the main event at a local 4-H club complete with contests, souvenirs and anything to satisfy our hobby.
But, aside from the band on Thursday night, the only music that weekend was emanating from my head. And it wasn't anything about old music, but, for a change of pace, current stuff from my SNS 100. Even better, it was my three most recent #1 songs on my playlist: Kongs' "This Girl", Neko Case's "Bad Luck" and Nick Waterhouse's "Straight Love Affair". It would probably be a cold day in hell if I actually heard any of these songs on the radio, since the Kongs and Waterhouse songs are from 2016, which the Neko Case song has gone pretty much unnoticed. Seems like I am becoming more and more detached from the current music scene, huh? But that is for another blog.
Because of these three awesome songs (particularly the Case and Waterhouse songs), I now have them to remind me of this event in which I enjoyed myself thoroughly. So, no surprise, these three songs have resurged on my SNS 100 this week. "This Girl", ready to fall from the top, actually strengthens its group on the top spot; while "Bad Luck" rebounds from 7-4 and "Straight Love Affair" goes from 9-6.
St. Paul and Broken Bones' "Apollo", the lead single from their third album, the forthcoming Young Sick Camellia to be released in September. Their 2014 debut, Half the City, yielded three top 5 songs on my blog, including the #1 "Call Me". Sea of Noise, released in 2016 was a bit of a disappointment, yielding only the #14 "All I Ever Wondered", but if the new album is like "Apollo", which jumps 28-8, perhaps it's a return to form of their retro-soul style.
As for the debuts, an obscure band that I like, Lucius (not to be confused with St. Lucia, who also has a new song out which I will add next week), leads the pack with "Neighbors". It is a new song from their current compilation album NUDES. Their biggest blog hit here was "Hey Doreen", at #2 song from early 2015. Hot on the heels of that on the list this week is "When the Curtain Falls", by Greta Van Fleet, a pure rock band from Michigan. At first listen it sounds like Led Zeppelin (lord knows that we need a band like this these days), and indeed there is some influence there. But the sound is fresh and has a hint of originality as well. The band's debut EP, 2017's Black Smoke Rising, produced two charttoppers on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart: "Highway Tune" and "Safari Song"; the former also landing on the Alternative chart as well. This is a new song from an unannounced album which is also top 10 on the rock chart and on the Alt chart as well. Could this band lead a new wave of rock in the late 2010's? Who knows, but I love the song regardless.
The remaining debuts are from country artists as my recent charts have been devoid of that genre. I went with current stuff from recent favorites Thomas Rhett, Jake Owen, and with the interest in the duet with the Bebe Rexta top five pop hit, Florida-Georgia Line, with "Simple".
NOTE: As of the day I am writing this, August 13 and 14, a soul legend, Aretha Franklin, is reportedly gravely ill, and her family has gathered around her. I plan on writing another blog dated August 6, covering the sixtieth anniversary of the Billboard Hot 100, but if something happens with "Lady Soul" before that, I will combine August 6 and 13 and will feature remembrances of the awesome music she's made.
