SNS Week of 9/3/2017

Another "catch-up" week sees, Trapdoor Social score a fourth week at the top with "Winning As Truth", but loses points in doing so.   Nick Waterhouse's "It's Time" also loses slightly but is now closer to the top, a position it held for a week before Trapdoor Social took over.  It could conceivably move back to the top.  Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still" holds at #3 but gains a point.  The song has spent 12 weeks at the top of the Billboard Alternative songs chart, and has hit the top 20 pop.   Here it still has a chance to hit the top if the aforementioned songs slip.   It would be injustice if P.TM didn't hit the top of my chart.   This is a band that I had followed way before pop or even alternative success, with four top 20 songs between 2011 and 2013.   We will see next week what happens.  Meanwhile, Tennis is gunning for its second number one as "In the Morning I'll Be Better" moves 8-4 for their third top five song here.  "Origins" had a two week stint at the top in early 2012.  Rounding out the top five is Foxygen's fifth entry in that elite circle, with "On Lankershim".

Electric Guest has the big mover in the top 10 with "Oh Devil", the National and Griswolds also move big in the top 20.   "Despacito", which had a big jump and was knocking on the SNS top  20 door, slide back to #23.   The song has been designated "Song of the Summer" by Billboard, and tied the record for most weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 with 16, before finally succumbing to the new Taylor Swift single,  "Look What You Made Me Do", which moves 77-1 on the Billboard chart and is a Tremor (my version of "bubbling under") on the SNS this week at 107.  "Despacito" has set worldwide records with three billion views on You Tube alone.

Beck's long awaited album Colors is due very soon, the follow-up to the Grammy winning Morning Change, and the first single, "Up All Night" is the top debut at #75.   He had released two singles in the meantime, the SNS #1 "Dreams", in 2015 and the #19 SNS "Wow" last year.   At first listen, "Up All Night" is a more accessible, up-tempo song, a bit more pop with his eclecticism thrown in, as opposed to the hip-hoppish "Wow".    Established artists who have hit my charts before also debut, including yet another Cold War Kids song (there's three of them on the list this week), "So Tied Up", a duet with Bishop Briggs.  Cold War Kids, like Portugal The Man, were a band I discovered before any mainstream airplay, but are now household names in the alt-rock world.   Dan Auerbach, BORNS, Fall Out Boy, and Saint Motel also debut.
