SNS Week of 9/10/2017

Still playing catch-up here.    This will be the last chart-only blog.   I am hoping to combine the next two weeks for a full blog.  In the meantime:

It took a while:  Twenty-one weeks, but Portugal. The Man is finally at the top spot.  It has taken the second longest amount of time to reach the summit:  "Keep You" by Wild Belle took 26 weeks to do it.   It's ascension to number one finally puts it at the same position as it has been on the Billboard Alternative Chart, where it has reigned for 13 weeks; even more important, it is now top 20 on the Hot 100.   This, from a band that I had been listening to for six years prior.

Speaking of six years ago, Beth Ditto has the top entry in the top 20 as "I Wrote the Book" storms 22-10.   The track is from her 2011 extended-play, appropriately titled EP.    Her new album Fake Sugar and first single, "Fire", is currently out and I will add it once "I Wrote the Book" peaks here.  Some nice entries into the top 20 overall, as Foster the People's "Doing It For the Money", a song that I had doubted, upon first listen, would catch on with me, nevertheless moves 21-12 to become their eighth straight SNS top 20 spanning three albums.   Alvvays gets its second top 20 with "In Undertow" (24-13), Kaleo, which had my number one song of 2016 with "Way Down We Go", returns with "No Good"(26-16), Up-and-comer Christina Taylor has another top 20 (her second under that name, her fourth overall including those billed as Taylor Centers), with "That Girl" (27-17), and finally reggae outfit Iration, with "Borderlines" (37-20).

Beck is making moves as his latest, "Up All Night" moves 75-40.  The upbeat track is from his long-awaited album "Colors".

Due to a couple of snafus, there are no "new" debuts this week, as I had inadvertently included them in the prior September 3 blog.  I had done rankings for August 27, September 3 and 10 all at once and accidentally included the supposed debuts for 9/10 with 9/3, hence last week's glut of Tremors.   Thus the Top Debut honors goes to Kesha's ""Praying", the pop singers' first song in awhile.  It's her fifth song to hit my SNS 100, which includes her as featured vocalist on 3 OH 3's, "My First Kiss" which hit #13 in 2010.   As a lead vocalist, her biggest SNS song is "Blow", #38 in 2011.  Also note that she has removed the "$" from her stage name and is no longer known as "Ke$ha".  "Praying" enters at #94.  X Ambassadors, Dirty Heads, and Honors also move from Tremors to the big chart.

Actually there was one new entry that debuted higher than Kesha:  "Holding On" by The War on Drugs, at #87.   But that had debuted three weeks ago, and I just "forgot" about the song on my August 27th edition.   I re-added it as a tremor last week, and it's back on the main chart this go round.

As I mentioned, I have been lackluster the last several weeks with the blog.   However, I plan on combining the September 17 and 24 editions with talk of "song of the summer" as well as a few other items.   Hang in there!
