The second of my "catch-up" mini-blogs goes back to the latter part of May, a month that I was very busy, between going to Virginia Beach and then the annual camping trip to Roscoe, where again, the iPods were grinding out music, first of all playing my stuff, and from my friends as well. A great time once again in spite of the rain.
There's a new #1 song this week by a band that needs no introduction. "Fever" by The Black Keys reaches the top spot; the song was driving thru my head all month, and it got a lot of airplay on Sirius XM radio's alt-nation channel. It's the Akron duo's third number one on my list, which encompasses the first singles from their three most recent albums. "Tighten Up" (the first ever #1 on SNS), "Lonely Boy" and now "Fever" have led the parade.
Among the debuts this week are Foster the People's follow-up to their SNS #1 "Coming of Age", with "Best Friend" another from their Supermodel. This one is a catchy as their best, and it did take a little while for it to warm up to, but it's another great track. With the unofficial start of summer upon us, it makes sense that Calvin Harris' "Summer" debuts. Harris, more of a producer and backing artist who has featured vocalists on his songs (most notably Florence Welsh of Florence + the Machine, on last years great "Sweet Nothing"), is more of his own artist here, and a nice sounding song that will enable him to hit the heights on his own.
Finally, Anna Calvi, the artist who my friend John Piacentini recommended a couple years back, returns with her second album, One Breath, and the first single is "Eliza". Starting off with a pounding beat, the Chrissie Hynde-ish sounds is less stated here, and is more of a driving, soulful rock de force here.
As expected, "Out of My League", by Fitz & the Tantrums, finally drops off (but not by much; it would have been #101 this week), after 63 weeks. I doubt if any song will match that for longevity. The elder statesman is now 'How Do You Know" by Field Mouse, 40 weeks.
