Billboard's #1 song for a second week is "We Are You", by the New York-based indie-pop/rock band Fun., which features R&B singer Janelle Monae. As I mentioned last week, the song, also #1 on the Alternative chart, #11 on the Triple-A list, and also moving up the Adult Top 40 listing as well. On my chart, I move it up from #8 to #3 and is within striking distance of the top next week. If the song stays atop Billboard's chart next week and it makes my zenith, it will be the first time ever that we agree on the most popular song in the country at the same time. I came close a few times. "Last Friday Night" by Katy Perry hit the top of Billboard's chart last fall, the same time it hit #2 here; another Perry song, "Firework" hit #3 here while at the top of the Hot 100. And two Adele songs, "Rolling In the Deep" and "Someone Like You" HAVE hit the top of both charts, but months apart. History could happen next week; stay tuned.
Number 2 on the Billboard chart, down from the top last week, is Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)". It was her third #1, and current sits at #8 on my chart, down from it's peak of 7. Kelly was (and probably will always be) my favorite American Idol, as far as pop singers go, I think she's got the most talent and realistic approach to the music this side of Adele......
...who, incidentally sits at #3 with her former #1 "Set Fire to the Rain". The song dropped off my list a couple weeks ago after a successful 33 week run, which resulted in a #9 peak on SNS last summer. It is followed at #4 by "Glad You Came", by The Wanted...a British/Irish boy band. More in the current pop vein with a hint of electronica and a touch of indie, it sits at #74 on my list. I do occasionally embrace current pop sounds, if only to place a 'marker' of sorts on the current time period; if they are catchy enough. The latest by Bruno Mars and Jessie J are also on my chart this week.
Rounding out the pop top five, is "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye. It holds at #2 on my list as well as the Alternative chart, and heads the Triple-A list. If the Fun. record doesn't to the double #1 trick next week; there's always a chance for this one.
Nada Surf nabs the Impact award with "Waiting for Something" entering the Top 20 at #16, and Bush scores its third Top 20 song with "Baby Come Home", all from Gavin Rossdale's band's comeback set The Sea of Memories.
The Top Debut and Pick of the Week is a song I am excited about, "Screws Get Loose" by Those Darlins. They are a female trio let by sisters Jessie and Nikki Darlin, and hail from Nashville (a third sister, Kelley, recently left the band). As you'd expect, they have a country influence, but they are mostly a power pop/garage rock hybrid, along the lines of bands like the Donnas, as well as from 1960's era garage rock. The title track ignores the Country, but accentuates the pop, punk and garage sensibilities of not only The Donnas, but also vintage bands like The Runaways as well. The pickin's have been a bit slow the last few weeks, but I like the prospects of this one. The song is the title track from the band's second album, to be released this month.
The band is currently touring Europe, but will come back to their home country this summer. They are touring with Best Coast (another current favorite of mine), and will be at New York's Terminal 5 on July 17. Definitely save that date.
Familiar bands are the next to debut. My sixth Fitz & the Tantrums song from their Picking Up the Pieces set, "L.O.V." is the next debut. The first five have hit my Top 20; in the absence of any serious new singles by this band, again I am going ahead and adding this one; I think it's a stronger cut than their their last single "Don't Gotta Work It Out", or the last cut I added "Breaking the Chains of Love". "L.O.V." was actually an early 2010 single, but this was before I had heard of the band. Hey, if it's a great album, why not? Similarly, Florence + the Machines' new one "Never Let Me Go", the fourth from Ceremonials, is stronger than the recent "No Light No Light" which missed my Top 20.
The Wombats had a big hit on my chart last year with "Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)", the second single from their This Modern Glitch set, was a #35 UK hit last year; alternative station WEQX added it to their playlist a couple weeks ago. Norah Jones is next with "Happy Pills"; it's from the sultry songstress' upcoming set Little Broken Hearts, due May 1.
Two bands, with the word "Moon" in them follow....Walk the Moon and Today the Moon Tomorrow the Sun wrap up the debuts on SNS. The former is an indie-rock band from Cincinnati, the latter from Atlanta.
