PERHAPS IT MIGHT BE SIMILAR to a movie buff walking into a Hollywood party, or maybe going to a baseball camp filled with ex-players there, but this past Wednesday evening at Deckerz Bar and Grill in North Myrtle Beach, I met several of the Carolina Beach Music singers who were gathered there, launching the start of the week-and-a-half long Spring S.O.S (Sounds of the Strand) festival which runs through next weekend. Deb Browning and Marlisa Kay Small were the main hosts and performers for the evening here, but along the way, several others attended, and in many cases, performed as well. Some recognized me, and some I was introduced to. Thus, what was pretty much just "names" on my chart, literally came to life this evening.
My wife and I have lived down here in Conway for seven months. And we had visited friends in the spring of 2023 in Ocean Isle Beach. On that trip, we had seen Deb and Marlisa play at the American Legion Hall in Little River. Since we've been here, we saw Deb again, this time with The Mac Daddy's Band at Captain Archies last October. In December, we, along with some friends, attended the Christmas Show at the Greg Rowles Theatre, and sitting just behind me was Steve Cheek who recognized me and we chatted a bit. We also caught a few songs by Pepper Creek at the Dirty Armadillo, and just this past week, caught Christina Black playing at the Main Street Taphouse in North Myrtle Beach. Ms. Black actually had played Deckerz the day before, launching the string of S.O.S. days.

But it had been a while since we were out, and it was months since we had been able to catch a gig from one of these artists. And, I had always wondered, having followed the genre for the past several years, what it was all about, and perhaps catch those who I had been following all these years.
Barb and I arrived here about a half hour before Deb and Marlisa were to start. There were a lot of "reserved" tables outside left for their friends, but we managed to grab a free table. Soon, more and more people arrived and Deb and Marlisa started on time. It was when I got a closer look at the stage area that I met some familiar names. Steve Cheek was there, recognized me once again. Looking the other way, Charlie Sattenfield also recognized me. Charlie, is a songwriter responsible for writing (and sometimes performing) recent beach hits.
| Yours truly pictured with Rhonda McDaniel at Deckerz |
Then there was Vaughan Penn, who just a couple weeks ago, I hadn't heard of--as did many other performers, even though she had an impressive resume over these many years (I intend on doing a blog on her soon). Last week she came out with her new song "Bands on the Beach", which has been setting the beach music world on fire. She was sitting next to Charlie. After Deb and Marlisa performed a few song, Vaughan came out and performed the song, which really rocked the house. As I mentioned last week, she named, in the lyrics, several beach artists. When it came to Rhonda McDaniel, she pointed over to where Charlie was sitting (and where Vaughan did sit before she got up to sing), and, sure enough, sitting in her place was Rhonda! Thus, I finally got to meet the artist who has topped my chart twice.
| Marlisa Kay Small (L) with Deb Browning and Art Amaral of Smokin' Hot |
Steve Cheek also came up and performed his current hit, his self-penned "Sugar With My Coffee". Of course, it was Deb and Marlisa's gig, and they performed, much of it individually. I loved Marlisa's cover of the current Billboard #1 song, Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas". Deb performed her rendition of her #2 blog hit "Put Your Hand in the Band", and her SNS breakthrough, "Stop Messing With My Man" as well as a great cover of The Tams' (more on them later) "Be Young, Be Beautiful, Be Happy". Also there, as she always was at these events. Melissa Hinson, who captured the event nicely as usual. It was a double celebration for Melissa, as she is also an accountant, and celebrated the end of tax season that evening. Art Amaral, of the band Gary Lowder & Smokin' Hot, provided sax accompaniment on many of the songs. Ray Scott, who deejays at Riptide Radio, was also on hand. Ray also anchors a countdown show Fridays, live from Deckerz as well.
Barb and myself left a little early, and unfortunately, I missed a performance from Rhonda McDaniel, and apparently Jennifer James was there as well, and missed not only her singing, but meeting her in person as well.
But all in all, it was a great evening where I got to meet many of the personalities of this genre whose ground zero lies right here on North Myrtle Beach's Ocean Drive section. As I mentioned, over the next week and a half at several venues around the area, the stars will continue to perform. Among the upcoming highlights:
At the OD Arcade and Lounge (which I hope to get to soon), various deejays will be spinning the classic music around the entire duration of the festival. The Spanish Galleon, on the beachfront at North Myrtle Beach, will feature the following:
April 16 - Band of Oz (also April 22)
April 17 - The Catalinas
April 18 - The Tonez
April 19 - Too Much Sylvia
April 20 - The Embers featuring Craig Woolard
April 21 - The Main Event Band
April 23 - Jim Quick & Coastline
April 24 - North Tower
April 25 - Special Occasion Band
At Deckerz, some of the performances of note:
April 18 - Pepper Creek (7 PM)
April 19 - Ray Scott (Noon), Jim Quick & Coastline (3 PM), Jeff James (6 PM)
April 23 - Cecilia Jeffery Patterson (7 PM)
April 24 - Ray Scott's Deck Party (4 PM); Carolina Coast Band featuring Rhonda McDaniel (8 PM, Also April 25 at 7 PM)
April 26 - Rick Strickland & Lesa Hudson (3PM), Jeff James (7PM)
Finally at Duck's Nightlife, also in North Myrtle there will be combinations of deejays and live performances, and Fat Harold's will host The Castaways on April 18, along with other acts.
There are several acts on this list that I do want to see, and hopefully I can catch them.
Back to the kick-off night, the evening has resulted in a jolt to the SNS 100, as many of the acts and songs take a jump up the chart. Marlisa's performance of "Choosin' Texas", along with its continued #1 status on the Billboard Hot 100 and even some beach charts, resulted in an 11 to 3 move on my chart. Steve Cheek's "Sugar with My Coffee", which was moving slowly in the top 20 the last couple of weeks, goes 19-15 with a bullet. Jennifer James' "Takin' It Easy" continues to move 46-35, while her previous single, "Carolina's Home" re-enters at #98. Deb Browning's duet with Michael Fite, "Getaway Car", a former #2 for five weeks late last year, and has been slowing its descent due to high beach chart positions, holds at #48 after 25 weeks. Rhonda McDaniel's "It Will Stand" from the General Johnson tribute album, moves 70-58, after only gaining one notch last week.
Finally, both this week's Mover and Top Debut are also affected by the kick-off: The Tams' new single "I Tried" enters at #65, was co-written by Charlie Sattenfield. And Vaughan Penn's "Bands on the Beach" takes a big jump from 93 to 32. The 61-point jump is the second most in SNS's fifteen-plus year history; it's just one short of the record, set by the Dum Dum Girls' 2011 song "Coming Down" which moved 73-11 in October 2011, a 62-notch climb.
HOT 100: Turning briefly to the big chart, as mentioned above, Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas" logs a sixth week at the top of the Hot 100. Olivia Dean's "Man I Need" continues its 2-3 pattern, moving back to #2, it's been at either of these positions for the past couple of months. Bruno Mars' "I Just Might", at the top of many beach lists, incidentally, moves back up a notch to #3, while the ever-persistent "Ordinary" by Alex Warren moves back to 4. BTS' "Swim" drops from 2 to 5. Both Ella and Olivia have additional songs in the top 10; the former has "Be Her" at #8, and the latter with "So Easy (To Fall in Love)" holding at #6.
BACK TO THE SNS 100: Getting back to my chart, we have another new #1, as sombr's "Homewrecker" advances 7-1 for his first blog topper. The song is doing well on the Hot 100 (#22) and at alternative as well. The top of the chart is still very competitive as last week's leader, The Jay Vons' "Changing Seasons" drops to #2, just missing the top once again. Ella Langley, as mentioned, moves 11-3. The song had originally peaked here at #7, and has, save for one week, continued to advance, but was pushed back to as low as 12 due to the competition. There's a chance it could move to the top next week; if it does it will be the second song to lead both mine and Billboard's chart this year. The Half-Cubes rendition of "Whenever You're on My Mind" moves 9-4. While Bruno Mars (#14 this week) and Ms. Langley are on some beach lists, two "home grown" acts make moves in the top ten: Jennifer Licko's "Meet Me at the Shag Pad" (8-5) and Rivermist's "At the End of the Day" (12-7). The other new song in the top 10 is The Milk's "I Need Your Love" (13-10).
Two new songs in the top 20 are led by the Impact winner, Anna Lavigne's "Light" (22-18). The Scottish singer joins another from that country, Brooke Combe, who still has three songs in the top 20. Indie act rosecoloredworld's "rock bottom has a basement" inches up 21-20.
Further down, aside from the big jump by Mover of the Week Vaughan Penn, and the move by Jennifer James, last week's Top Debut, Ms. Combe's "Tears Won't Lie" moves 39-29. Ruth Morayniss' "Come the Light" (42-30) and Tim Sidden's "Don't Let Us Fade Away" (63-41) also make significant moves.
DEBUT TIME: Eight new songs with six of them entering the SNS 100 (including one by a member of an all-time classic band), while another one re-enters. As mentioned earlier, The Tams' have the Top Debut with "I Tried", the follow-up to the legendary ensemble's "My True Love" which peaked at #2 late last year. The new song is just as great; the group has continued to embrace the classic beach sound which reigned decades ago. When a song brings you back to the golden days of the Strand, or at least to fantasize being there, you know there is a connection. Should be another hit for this long-running group. It enters at #65.
Next, coming in at #84, is "Trigger Happy" by Aubrie Sellers. This song was performed a few weeks back on The Kelly Clarkson Show. This is an artist who once described her music as "grunge country", and there's a lot going on here. You can throw in "indie" and "singer-songwriter" into the mix. But it all comes out has one fine, accessible song, that only gets better with many listens.
We now go back into the late 1960's psychedelic era with "Easy" by Velvet Daydream. Definitely a "trippy", dreamy vibe going on here. Woodstock, anyone? The band is from Colorado, but apparently some 'band' created by AI called The Velvet Daydream is causing some confusion. But I'm thinking that this song, entering at #86 is the real deal. Too Much Sylvia follows up its beach smash of last year, "Jukebox Playing 45s' with "I'll Be There". Not the Jackson 5/ Mariah Carey song, but an original, the song is a bit more introspective and slower than prior efforts, this one has a cool 70's easy listening vibe here. The song grows on you as it goes on. Should be a definite beach hit.
Next is the latest from Internet-ers SupaPurple (the band that includes drummer Daniele Sylvestri), coming in at #93 with "Silo Mind", a mid-tempo rocker that could hit, and finally at #100 is the legend himself, Paul McCartney with his latest "Days We Left Behind", and has the title suggests, it's a look back at his long and winding road of a career. It comes in at #100.
AND THEN WE HAVE the just-announced class of 2026 for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. To be honest, I am tired of commenting on this because the reactions are the same every year. So-and-so shouldn't have gotten in, this person was snubbed, this one isn't rock, etc. Well, a brief rundown of the winners here.
