BEFORE I GET INTO this week's action, I just wanted to mention the Facebook fiasco last week when I had posted the blog on my page, as I do each week, only to have moments later, be removed as "Spam" by the Powers That Be, saying that I was leading readers onto a spam website and it violated "community standards". Actually, that's the second time this happened; a couple months ago, a blog from last fall got taken down for the same reasons. I appealed that one and it was back. As for the latest issue, I reposted it without my usual tags to Facebook friends who are in my top 20 as well as all artists who debuted. And in that latter case, they were all friends on this platform which made it more frustrating. But, lo and behold, they overturned that as well. Blogspot for the last fifteen years has been a "safe place" to post. I do this for free and I don't have any advertising; I do not monetize this blog as I do this for the love of music, no matter how frustrating it can be sometimes. But it looked like I got more than the average of views, so I am glad all is well there.
Before I get into my chart, in which two acts dominate the top four, and both of them have four songs each on the chart, I want to brush over the Hot 100. For the fourth time, Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas" moves to the top spot, for its fifth week overall. It switches places with BTS' "Swim" which debuted at the top last week. Olivia Dean continues her "2-3" positions as "Man I Need" continued at #3 this week, but her other song "So Easy (To Fall In Love)" sets a new high at #6. Bruno Mars continues at #4 with "I Just Might", the song is currently #1 on Justin Rouses beach music survey, and had peaked at #2 on Don Mark's last week before retreating. Of course, it had two non-consecutive weeks atop SNS. "Ordinary" in its 59th week is still #5. I guess we'll have to endure this one for another 19 weeks before it finally falls off.

| Brooke Combe (Top) and the Jay Vons have dominated the SNS 100 this year, and have the top 4 songs this week, and four each overall on the chart. |
MOVING TO my chart, it seems that 2026 is shaping up as a war between The Jay Vons and Brooke Combe. There is a new #1 here this week, "Changing Seasons" by The Jay Vons, jumping up from #6 last week. The band becomes the first act to have two number ones so far this year. It's also the fourth blog chart-topper for the band, which has been inactive since its 2019 album release, The Word. That puts it in elite company, as it becomes only the fourth album in SNS history to pull four or more #1's from an album. Fitz and the Tantrums' self-titled third album also yielded four number ones, while that band's prior album More Than Just a Dream, and ScreenAge's DNR both yielded five toppers. The band also has the #2 song "It Was Wrong to Love You", so it's one notch away from tying the record. It's also the first time that one act has held the top two spots since May 5, 2024 when Deb Browning had the top two songs, at #1 with "Sunshine and Summertime" (a duet with Marlisa Kay Small), and #2 with "Put Your Hand in the Hand". The group is still on the charts with two of their prior number one's "Keep on Moving" at #51, and "My Mama (She Was Right)" hanging in at #84.
Equally impressive is Brooke Combe, who also has four songs on the chart, including the #3 and #4 entries. "A-Game" (7-3) and "This Town" (holding at #4) are from prior albums, while her recent chart-topper "How Can I Tell You (To Love Me More)" is at #15. But the big story is her new single "Tears Won't Lie" debuting at #39 as the top new entry. More on that below. The Womack Sisters' "I Just Don't Want You (To Say Goodbye)" round out the top five.
The two big movers in the Top Ten are sombr's "Homewrecker" (13-7) and The Half-Pipes' "Whenever You're On My Mind" (14-9). Jennifer Licko's "Meet Me At the Shag Pad" holds at #8, while Bruno Mars' "I Just Might" falls to #10. The top songs are bunched tightly and it's conceivable that any of them could claim the top spot next week. Don't be surprised if it's "Homewrecker", currently #25 on the Hot 100.
Once again, only one new entry in the Top 20, and thus gaining the Impact award, is "I Shiver" by The Main Event Band moving 21-20. The Mover of the Week is Ruth Morayniss' "Come The Light" moving 66-42.
WE HAVE DEBUTS, I'M NOT LYING: I mentioned this briefly last week, but I am excited for Brooke Combe's latest, "Tears Won't Lie". She's definitely the most impactful new artist on SNS this year, however this Scottish singer-songwriter has yet to be discovered on these shores despite an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live programs. She seems to be single-handedly keeping the U.K. Northern Soul genre alive there. This retro-soul romp can come right out of the mid-1960's with this bone-chilling tour de force. Comparing her to a Dusty Springfield, Cilla Black or a Petula Clark doesn't really do her justice, she's in a class all her own. It debuts at #39 this week, but it sets a record point total for a debut.
On a down note, I had posted the song on my timeline this week, hoping my friends would comment, or at least "like" it. But nothing, except for Canadian Ruth Morayniss giving it a "love" and exclaiming "What a talent!" (Thank you, Ruth!). I realize that most of my friends left new music behind decades ago, with the latest "holdouts" abandoning what's current a decade ago, but this song is in the style of the golden age of soul and pop music. And probably even more depressing is that Carolina beach music, long thought to be the U. S. equivalent of northern soul, could at least spin this.... or her prior songs, for that matter, but isn't. I'll tell you, if I was a deejay at the OD Pavilion in Ocean Drive, I would play her music---not to mention The Womack Sisters (granddaughters of soul and beach legend Sam Cooke), and I'd throw in "Changing Seasons" by The Jay Vons as it has that blue-eyed soul beach vibe from the late 60's. Beach stations played MT Jones' "I'd Be Lying" last year, why can't they play one of Brooke's songs?
I realize I'm a "newcomer" to the Strand, and have only seen a small number of acts performing this music, and have yet to go to the OD Pavilion, but has the genre changed so much that songs echoing the vintage sound of beach music aren't considered anymore? I had posted "How Can I Tell You" to the Beach Music Facebook page, and again, only one like. Oh well. End of rant.
Anyway, the next highest debut IS from the local beach music community. At #63 is the latest from Tim Sidden, "Don't Let Us Fade Away". Sidden is one of the big names in beach music circles, performing with several bands such as Cat 5, and is an accomplished producer. This new song is also a bone-chiller and also is a throwback to the vintage era of this music. Chris Jones wrote the song, and it's a pure winner. As with many local beach music, it references the Carolina scene to a tee. Very sentimental and the production is being top-notch. This should top last year's #26-peaking "You Make Me Crazy". By a longshot! Awesome song!
One of my favorite indie bands these days is The Peppermint Kicks, and they enter with "Shaking Underground" at #85. This one sort of has traces of The Ramones, but is definitely in the center lane of the power pop mixed with a little punk to boot...meanwhile, Cold War Kids are back after a small hiatus, debuting at #87 with "Push My Luck" as the band rocks here and doing what they do best......Blair Sparrow makes his blog debut with "Big Party Excuse", he is an artist from Nova Scotia in Canada. Entering at #88, this is a bouncy, moving along rocker, and a catchy one at that. A few listens and you can really get into it. Miley Cyrus follows her top 20 blog hit "Dream As One" with "Younger You". This is a tender ballad in which she goes back to the role that made her famous in the first place, The Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special, it's a message to herself going back in the day, sentimental indeed. It debuts at #90. Social Distortion, a punkish band that harkens back to the golden age of alternative (remember "Ball and Chain"?), and they have lost none of their edge over the last 35 years (has it been that long?). "Born to Kill" is a driving rocker that doesn't let up. Debuts at #94.

| Vaughan Penn's "Bands on the Beach" debuts this week. |
Finally, another making her first appearance on SNS, but who apparently has been around for quite a while (her music has been featured so many times in television and movies), is Vaughan Penn, with "Bands on the Beach". Yes, it's in the beach music realm, and she does to that genre what, say, Tim Izzard does to 1970's glam rock, and that is naming all the hit bands from the Grand Strand area, new and old.....Among the many that she names includes Too Much Sylvia, The Embers, The Tams, North Tower, Swingin' Medallions, Band of Oz, The Catalinas, Rhonda McDaniel, Rick Strickland, The Chairmen of the Board, and several others. The song rocks throughout and Ms. Penn's voice is very appealing. Definitely a hit everywhere it's played. It starts here at #93.
One last word, speaking of Band of Oz, the beach community is mourning the passing of that band's Doug Winstead. Condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.
