THIS ONE IS a bit late, almost a week so. It's Easter Sunday as I write this, so Happy Easter for those who celebrate, as well as a belated Happy Passover. Thus, this will be brief.
We'll start out with the new number one song on my blog chart, that being "The Night Before" by the Akron, OH duo The Black Keys. It's from their new album, No Rain, No Flowers, and comes just a year after their previous set, Ohio Players, which had four top 20 songs on Scenes 'n' Soundwaves, including "All The People (Stay High)" which, despite number ones on both the Billboard alternative and Triple-A Airplay charts, peaked here at #3.

The Black Keys have their ninth SNS #1 with "The Night Before", and are releasing a new album and tour this year after a difficult 2024. |
2024 was a rough year for the Keys, as they had to cancel a North American tour in support of Ohio Players. In June of that year, they changed managers. There was talk that all this was because of low ticket sales, and the duo, together since 2001, was losing popularity. Drummer Patrick Carney responded that they were pretty much screwed by management for all that happened, thus went in a different direction, and vowed to continue touring, only in smaller venues.
As a result of the canceled tour, this allowed them to concentrate on further recordings. This included taking part of an album associated with Crypto coinages, recording a couple of tracks; one with Alice Cooper, and the other with DannyLux. However, the duo again was criticized for taking part in the endeavor, with magazine GQ stating that the tour was related to political action committees taking part in 2024 US elections.
Still, the duo moved on and recorded the new album and released "The Night Before" as the first single. It hit #1 a couple weeks ago on Triple-A airplay and is top five on various alternative charts. As for Scenes 'n' Soundwaves, its #1 designation makes it nine blog-toppers, which is second only to Fitz and the Tantrums' twelve. As the duo also had the very first #1 on my blog in August 2010 with "Tighten Up", it extends their span on number ones to 14 years, 8 months.
Elsewhere on the SNS 100, Starbuck's "Beach Radio" drops to #2 after a week at the top, while three future contenders for the top spot, Michael Nau's "No Quit"(4-3), Sylvia Johns Ritchie's "My Heart Knows You By Heart" (6-4), and Deb Browning & Michael Fite's "I Never Wanted To" (7-5) are all very closely bunched and any of them---including "Beach Radio" could be at the top next week. The Jay Vons are the only new entry in the Top 10 with "Days Undone" (13-9).
Speaking of Michael Fite, his group The Mac Daddy's Band has the Impact this week as "Seaside in the Sand" jumps 42-19, while Justice, featuring Tame Impala inches 21-20 with "Neverender" for the only other new entry there.
Other big movers include M.T.Jones' "I'd Be Lying" (36-22); Bachman-Turner Overdrive's "60 Years Ago) (35-25), and the band were honored last week, incidentally in their hometown of Winnipeg as a bridge in that town was named after the band; and last week's Top Debut, Seth Storer, grabs Mover of the Week honors with "Insomnia" (76-56).
HOT 100: Before we get into the debuts, I have to make yet another comment on the Hot 100. "Luther" stays at the top for an 8th week, but Kendrick Lamar's "rival", Drake, continues a traditional method up the chart as "Nokia" moves 3-2. "Die With a Smile" drops a notch to #3, and we have a debut at #4, "All The Way" by BigXthaPlug featuring Bailey Zimmerman (funny how these rappers come out of nowhere while those in other genres work for years trying to get noticed!). While songs such as "Pink Pony Tail", "Lose Control" (week 86, five off the longevity record), and "Beautiful Things" are STILL up there in the top ten (and "Birds of a Feather" is #11), one promising new song heads into the top 10 the old-fashioned way: "Ordinary" by Alex Warren moves 14-7; this is one song I will add soon.

Deb Browning's new single, "Does Your Baby Got Your Back" is this week's Top Debut at #59. |
DEB-UTS: Two beach music powerhouses are the top two new entries this week. It's led by the latest solo effort from Deb Browning "Does Your Baby Got Your Back". While I wonder if the title of that song purposely has certain Sir Mix-a-Lot overtones, this song is everything but. With a piano and horn intro, Deb borders on doo-wop at times. Her vocals are in fine form; the voice is pleasantly tentative and emotional.
While Deb's most recent releases have been covers, this one was self-penned She started writing this with the help of Kyle Hooks, the leader of The Six Piece Suits when Deb was collaborating with that group; only recently did she complete it. While everything Deb touches turns to gold, personally I love her own compositions, and this one is top-notch. With her Michael Fite duet "I Never Wanted To" hitting top five this week, this one should join it very soon. The song debuts at #59.
Next is another accomplished singer's new one, Jerry Powell's "Dance With Me". With a steady beat and punctuated by a cool sax, this one keeps moving and doesn't stop. The video is pretty interesting as well as it's just Jerry and has band throughout, but the production techniques just add to things here. It's been a couple years since his "One More Summer Night" hit, but it looks like he hasn't missed a step. The persistent beat keeps things moving at an even pace. Should be another hit for the Alabama native as it debuts at #70.
Also entering are the Jersey outfit The Cynz with "Heartbreak Time". Cyndi Dawson and company came close to the top 20 the last couple of outings, but this one rocks more than before, and should break through this time around as it's a hit in indie circles.....DWLLRS take the 90's alternative route with "TTYLSOS" that should generate some spins.....It's been awhile since we heard from The Blue Stones, but that Canadian outfit returns with "Come Apart" a textured rocker right up the alternative lane.....Pop singer Lizzo has her first in a couple of years with "Still Bad". This one has a moving, catchy beat. So far, it's not as well received as her "About Damn Time", but it's worthy of similar success. The singer has some angst, but the beat is moving and catchy. I definitely will give this one a chance.... finally, Calvin Harris breaks from his production duties with his new one "Smoke the Pain Away". This is a departure from his usual style, as it sort of has country overtones. Although he has his usual instrumental break after the first verse, it's mostly a harmonica solo rather than his standard EDM.
