GETTING RIGHT TO IT,, the story remains Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars' "Die With a Smile", as it withstands the competition from Bad Bunny on the Billboard Hot 100, and by Don West on the Scenes 'n' Soundwaves 100 to stay at #1 for three and seven weeks, on the respective charts.
Looking first at the Billboard chart, there was speculation that rap artist Bad Bunny might take over the top spot. While I mentioned last week that a slew of tracks from his album Debi Tirar Mas Fotos, debuted on the charts, none entered higher than #16, possibly suggesting that the power of hip-hop wasn't as great as it once was, Kendrick Lamar's recent album bomb, notwithstanding.
But what I didn't know what that Bad Bunny's album was dropped late in the chart week, thus not having a chance for a full week's entry. As a result, the full week speculation was that one of the tracks would hit #1 knocking out "Die With a Smile" after a two-week run. But that didn't happen, as Bunny took the #2 and #3 positions (with "DTMF" and "Balle Inolvidable", respectively), and another song in the top ten (#8 with "Nuevayol"). The Puerto Rican hip-hop star has been a contender for next week's #1, but lack of major radio station airplay may hold it back, while Gaga and Mars are still getting stronger at radio, thus may be sticking around for a while.
While I'm discussing the Hot 100, Shaboozey's long-running "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" is still #4, but its hopes of getting back to the top spot for a record-breaking 20th week seem to be fading, especially if "Die..." and one of the Bad Bunny tracks stay ahead of it.
The final note about the big chart is that "Lose Control" by Teddy Swims is at #9. The track first entered the top 10 one year ago today and now has amassed 74 total weeks on the Hot 100. The top 10 run is close to equalizing The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" for the longest run in the upper echelon. It's also now seventeen weeks away from a possible longevity record, currently held by Glass Animals' 'Heat Waves" at 91 weeks. But there has been some dissention on the "Billboard Hot 100" Facebook page, about how the song was originally loved, but its continued presence near the top of the chart has people scratching their heads, especially since the two follow-ups, "The Door" and "Bad Dreams", both great songs in their own right, are basically ignored. While "Lose Control" did hit #1 on my playlist last spring, for three weeks, it's long been gone from the SNS 100.
I do apologize for constantly referring to the Hot 100 each week on my blog, but that's because I like to document any history and records being broken. That includes the current run of "Die With a Smile" concurrent with my chart, as well as the pursuits of "A Bar Song" and "Lose Control". Don't worry, that will go away soon.
TURNING TO THE SNS 100, "Die With a Smile" holds on for another week at #1, becoming only the fourth song on the 14-and-a-half-year blog chart to log seven or more weeks. Both "Screws Get Loose" by the alternative female band Those Darlins, and "Blow Me (One Last Kiss) by Gaga's fellow female pop star P!nk, amassed seven weeks atop the chart in 2012. "Die" is one week off the all-time record of 8, by The Black Keys' "Fever", from 2014.
"Die With a Smile", which had a big lead last week, lost a bunch of points this week. The chart does take into effect, input from friends and readers about songs. One of my friends questioned why Lady Gaga is at the top. While I don't believe she has heard this cool ballad, she didn't think Gaga had much talent.....something I originally thought, before I got to see her without the theatrics, singing a medley from The Sound of Music at the 2015 Oscars in a Julie Andrews tribute. Check out my blog from back then: Scenes 'n' Soundwaves: Going Gaga over Evolution (SNS week of 2/22/2015)
So, can "Die" equal the record next week? It's going to be very tough, as the top five songs are within seven points of each other. Don West's "Small Change" is a close #2, while Teddy Swims has two songs in the top five: "Bad Dreams" at #3 and his duet with Thomas Rhett, "Somethin' 'Bout a Woman" at #5. Moto Bandit's "Private Pile" is at #4. New in the top 10 are Rainy Day Bandits, and Morgan Wallen.
Four new entries in the top 20 include the Impact winner, The Palms' "Ghost", Fitz and the Tantrums' "Steppin' On Me", New Jerseyan Karen O (with Danger Mouse) with "Super Breath" and Whiskey-Chitto Ramblers' "Breakdown".
Last week's Top Debut is this week's Mover, that being Barry Walsh's "Rescue Me" (61-44).

Eclectic duo Sofi Tukker have the Top Debut with "Purple Hat" |
DEBUTS: Ten new entries this week, including two new to the SNS 100. One of those is "Purple Hat" by a duo known as Sofi Tukker. They had performed on The Kelly Clarkson Show last week and both my wife and I got addicted to this. Sort of a mix of hip-hop, techno, electronica and alternative, once the song gets going it really cooks. Not much to the lyrics, as most of it is repeated in rapid secession, but it doesn't matter. It's polarizing, but so far, very addictive and appealing. The song was actually released back in 2019 (as it seems to be the normal with a lot of good music I've discovered recently). Still, it's new to me. The song reminds me a bit of Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice" for a similar context. It enters at #50.
The next eight songs are by those who've been on my chart before. One of the best neo-soul outfits around, Thee Sacred Souls, return with "My Heart is Drowning". Again, a slice of retro-60's soul is the order of the day. It transforms you back in time. For some reason, the group is still not being played on beach music stations. C'mon, get with the program........Moving from soul to country, Lainey Wilson's "4X4XU" is a very tasty song. It's one of her best, a slow ballad with Lainey's awesome voice. Definitely will rival her "Watermelon Moonshine". Already a hit on the country chart, it should do the same here.........SZA, with a couple of blog hits under her belt, returns with "BMF". While the song starts off like "The Girl From Impala", that quickly changes. Not as much ambience as her "Saturn" hit form last year, but this is a well-constructed pop song that doesn't stray off course as well. SZA is one of my favorite current pop artists, and this should be another hit here......Kate Hudson continues her trek into music, with "Talk About Love". More rhythmic than her blog top 20, rock-infused "Gonna Find Out", this one is more along the adult contemporary vein, even with a dash of Stevie Nicks, or more recently, Lissie
Heading to the Grand Strand, Jim Quick and Coastline return with the bouncy "Hustlin'". A nice, bouncy trek here that should fit in with what the beach genre is these days. Featured on vocals is Albert Rogers. Definitely easy to shag to.......One of the most successful artists of 2024, Sabrina Carpenter, who has straddled both pop and national beach music charts, is back with "Bed Chem". Similar to SZA, this is a straight in the middle pop song. Not quite in the "Feather"/"Espresso" vein, but this should still be able to grab a significant chart run here........Jitwam had a big hit here with "Opendoors" and he returns with "I'm A Rock". While it doesn't have the instrumental hook of the prior song, this one is much slower, and good for slow dancing. While it's subdued, it still works, at least upon initial listens........Finally, Shaboozey's follow-up to "A Bar Song", "Good News", while not gaining traction as of yet, is still country and in somewhat a similar vein. If anything, it should further help establish him as a long-running country artist.
The last debut is "Life in Fear" by Paige Kennedy, which might take a few listens to get used to. It's rather offbeat, but the artist, who hails from Manchester in the U.K. has concocted a mixture of pop, alternative and techno.

Devoted Carolina Beach Music fan, Terry Gleason, who ran the Beach Music Facebook pages and had a great rapport with the area singers, passed away last week at the age of 66. |
REMEMBERING : This past week, the Carolina beach music community lost one of its own, Terry Gleason, who passed at the age of 66. We were Facebook friends, and I enjoyed reading about her adventures. From what I know, she wasn't a performing artist, but a very supportive fan of the genre and was very sincere. She wrote inspirational blogs on the beach music pages that she ran, touching both the artists as well as the genre's many fans. The outpouring from the beach artists in the area have been overwhelming. Everyone has had nothing but great things to say about Terry; that she had a "heart of gold". I wish I had gotten to know her. People have been posting many of her favorite songs on the "Beach Music" Facebook page, which she was an administrator for. Rest in Peace, Terry.
