Roselle Park Announces Art Fest Lineup; Royel Otis, Shaboozy Top SNS, Billboard; Starbuck's Box Set (SNS week of 8/18/2024)

STILL RUNNING LATE, but the chart was compiled last week, so all is well.

A look at the Scenes 'n' Soundwaves 100's chart still shows a big free-for-all at the top.  Taking advantage of this mess is Royel Otis, which garners their first blog-topper with the bouncy "Foam".    With it's "Everybody Wants to Rule the World"-type riff going throughout the song, it leaps 3-1.     It's the Sydney, Australian duo's second blog top ten, following "Murder on the Dance Floor" which reached #7 a few months back (and #2 on the Billboard alternative airplay chart).

It completes a streak where each entry by the duo had exceeded the previous entry.     Royel Otis' first SNS charter was "Oysters In My Pocket", which lasted only one week on the blog list, peaking at #98.  'Sofa King" did a little better, going to #87 and lasting 11 weeks (and it re-enters this week at #89 as it also re-enters the alternative chart).  Unfortunately, "Foam", despite its lofty blog chart position, didn't do as well on any national charts; it disappeared pretty quickly when it looked like it would be another hit.    "Linger", a cover of the 1990's Cranberries hit, is on some alternative airplay lists this week, taken from a performance on Sirius XM's "Alt Nation" channel.

It's still a close race at the top, as right behind are Billie Eilish's "Lunch" (6-2), and The Holiday Band's "I Got it Bad For You" (9-3).    Deb Browning and Marlisa Kay Small's "Sunshine and Summertime", which has been in and out of the top spot for the past three months, drops to #4.   Teddy Swims moves up from 7 to 5, for his second in that part of the chart.

While it looks like next week's #1 could come from either Royel Otis, Billie Eilish or The Holiday Band, don't discount the songs just outside the realm.     Moving from 40 to 10 in only its second week is The Gotts Band featuring Pip Millett, "Got To Be Good", scoring Impact honors.   Cage the Elephant's "Rainbow", moving up the alternative listing, jumps 22-12, and Shaboozy's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" jumps 35-13 to nab Mover of the Week.

Speaking of "A Bar Song", the song scores a sixth week on the Billboard Hot 100, again ahead of "I Had Some Help" by Post Malone and Morgan Wallen, which is still #2.   However, "I Had Some Help", which also has six weeks at the top, still clings onto the Billboard "Song of the Summer" lead, as of the week ending August 24.   I believe there are two more weeks in the summer song charts so if "A Bar Song" stays at the top, it could get interesting at the end.     On the SNS 100, there's a possibility of a jump to the top spot next week, or maybe the top five, although the song came on too late here for any "Song of the Summer" consideration.   The Heavy Heavy's "Happiness" is the only newcomer to the top 20 (22-19).

The middle of the chart is very competitive.   While songs like Jalen Ngonda's "Here to Stay", Post Malone & Blake Shelton's "Pour Me a Drink", Dustin Ahkuoi & Sharon Woodruff's "Back By Popular Demand, and Marsha Morgan's "Knockin' Down Doors" are moving up well, many others are caught in a big traffic jam, being pushed down despite bulleting and gaining points.    Donny Trexler, Einsteins Dad, Anna Lavigne, and The Amplifier Heads drop one or even two positions, and Steve Cheek, and Northern Tracks managed to hold on to last week's positions while still gaining points.

NEW AND NOTEWORTHY:    Many debuts this week, with the focus on the three highest entries.  Sometimes songs that I didn't expect to make a big impact, surprisingly do.     The Beaches had a top 20 blog and national alternative hit earlier this year with "Blame Brett" but the Canadian femme quartet's latest "Takes One to Know One" just blows me away.  This is an exciting power-pop song, very gutsy, perhaps it's the Go-Go's meet the early The Cure.   Perhaps mix the 1960's, 1980's and current indie pop and you have this awesome song.    The Beaches will be playing Radio City Music Hall in New York City on September 21.

I mentioned last week that The Gotts Band's "Got to Be Good" came to me thanks to a Spotify recommendation.   In the same batch is the next highest debut, Jitwam's "Opendoors".    Although released back in 2019, it was the first time I've heard the song and the artist, originally from northeast India, but now based in Brooklyn, specialized in retro psychedelic soul, a trend that has been proliferating on the SNS for quite some time now.     With the intro progression sort of a cross between The Doobie Brothers' "Listen to the Music", and one of my all-time favorites, Three Dog Night's "Out In the Country" repeated throughout, and the horn section coming in as well, it's a good timely feeling one gets when they listen to this.    This sort of takes me back in time, to some summer festival in the city (or anywhere, to be honest).     Sort of an "all day music" thing, to reference the classic song by War).      A perfect end-of-summer, into fall song.

The third big debut is the latest from Starbuck, "Jones About You", the follow-up to the recent Top 3 "Beach a Go-Go".   Another with a very cool, bone chilling info, Bruce Blackman sings smoothly through this relaxing, easy-going ballad.    With interest in Yacht Rock (okay, I think that's the first time I've mentioned this sub-genre on my blog!), and with still a lot of interest in the classic "Moonlight Feels Right", this is a perfect beach song.  The Starbuck renaissance of the past two years should continue into the fall.

While I am mentioning Starbuck, check out the new, retrospective boxed set, Moonlight Feels Right: The Collection 1975-2023, which is a 2-CD, 3-vinyl set which includes all six Billboard Hot 100 chart songs by the band, and a reprise of "Mrs. Bluebird", a 1968 charting hit for Blackman's first group, Eternity's Children.  Also included songs recorded by the final reunions of the band in the 2010's, as well as Blackman's recent Beach Music and SNS hits like "I Love Doing Nothing", 'Coldest Night of the Year" and "On the Sand".   Blackman has definitely embraced the "yacht rock" tag and many of those songs are great examples of that genre.

As far as the other debuts, a couple months back, I included on my "Murmurs" list a new song by The Holiday Band, "I Don't Wanna Cry", that was debuting on many regional and national beach charts.   However, I removed it since I couldn't find it on download, Spotify or YouTube, and instead added "I Got It Bad For You", recorded 11 years ago but released to Spotify only earlier this year.     Turns out there was a valid reason why I couldn't find it.    It was actually a solo record for its lead singer, Mike Taylor.   It is available on Spotify (he's billed there as "Michael J. Taylor"), thus Taylor, who, aside from his band's current top 3 song, a top 10 duet with Karen Clayton with their cover of "I'm Your Puppet", and a top 25 entry with Sylvia Johns Ritchie with "Goin' Down Swingin', all charting this year, now can claim a solo entry as well.   This one definitely has a sixties-era R&B/beach music vibe, thus is perfect for shagging down at the Grand Strand.    You can definitely see why Taylor has had success with the North Myrtle crowd, this voice is very soulful.

Next is the latest by Collective Soul, "Mother's Love".  I wasn't sure whether to add this song, or another from the Atlanta-based band's new album Here To Eternity, "Bluer Than So Blue".    While the band's peak was in the 1990's, they have hit the top 20 a couple times here.    However, both of these songs don't break any new ground; they are in the same formula and same structure that the band has done during its entire career.    Of course, I embraced this in the past and were the last band I've seen live (three years ago, in Morristown NJ).   But the band's hooks and riffs have worked in the past, and with a few listens, this could make some noise.

Three artists associated with American Idol debut this week.    Abi Carter, the winner of the most recent season, and who charted recently with "This Isn't Over", enters with her new release, "Peppermint Sky".   Though the ballad starts slowly, it does build towards the end, making this a worthwhile listen.   Katy Perry, who had just left the show as a judge for the past seven years to concentrate on reviving her music career (she's being replaced by season 4 winner Carrie Underwood, by the way), enters with "Woman's World".   This is purely pop that despite the hiatus, doesn't really break new ground.   The song debuted at #62 on the Hot 100 but dropped off the following week.   It's also dropping quickly on the Hot AC chart.     With a #96 debut here, future listening will determine the fate of this one.    It's the lead track from her upcoming set, 143.   Finally, Benson Boone, who competed in the early rounds a few seasons back before dropping out, coming off a big hit with "Beautiful Things" (#2 Hot 100, #12, SNS), follows it up with "Slow It Down".  The song sort of drags a bit, but, like the prior song, he comes alive midway through.    The song is already a hit at Hot AC, but future spins will determine its fate here.     The song is a Tremor, entering at #103.

Finally, also on the Tremors list is the latest from Rev. Bubba D. Liverance and The Cornhole Prophets, "Down With That", another from Bubba's Expect No Mercy, Pt 1 set.  This is a cool, moving, boogie number, sort of a rockabilly number; Bubba and the gang seemed to have a good time doing this one.  Swing away to this one.

Pam Welch-Reinoso was the founder of the Roselle Park Arts Festival, which celebrates its tenth annual event on Saturday September 28.  Ms. Welch-Reinoso sadly passed away in July.  This year's festival will be dedicated to her.

STILL LOVING ART:  I've been covering my hometown of Roselle Park NJ's annual Arts Festival, held the last Saturday of September each year.     I had attended this in 2021 and 2022, and, while the festival showcases all various forms off the arts, including crafts, paintings, dance troupes, and other forms, it's the music, at the festivals two stages that I am drawn to.   It was here that I discovered the band ScreenAge, which played the festival in 2019 and returned in 2021 (the fest was cancelled due to COVID in 2020), and its offshoot, Colorjoy, played in 2022.    Both of those bands made a big impact on the blog, combining for nine number one's (including a solo effort from its frontwoman, Emily MacMahon), and a total of 17 top ten songs.

Among the other artists making an impact, include Alexis Morrast, Swingadelic, The Johnny Woods Band, Jennifer Cintron, Ryan Chatelain and Alex Speck (the latter two subsequently combined to form a band, The Dust-Ups).   And then last year (which I had to miss due to health reasons), Charlotte Sessions, who has scored two blog #1's this year, one of which, "I've Fallen For A Dragon" is still hanging in there at #82 after 27 weeks on SNS.

This year's edition (the 10th annual) will be held in the borough's downtown area on Saturday, September 28.    The theme will be a tribute to the festival's founder, Pam Welch-Reinoso, who sadly passed away last month.

Last week, the lineup for the Breakwater (Main) Stage in the borough's Mauri Park, was announced.   The best news is that Ms. Sessions, who performed last year at the more acoustic Library stage, is now included on the main stage, playing second at  1 PM.     This year's lineup:

2:00 pm Widely Grown
3:15 Speeches from local officials and festival organizers.
6:00 Verdict

The Ichy Ankle Boys are a trio that play an eclectic mix of acoustic rock and blues, based in Union and have played local venues like The Climax Brewery in Roselle Park, and a street festival in nearby summit.

By now, readers of this blog should know a lot about the talented Charlotte Sessions.   She is a home-grown singer-songwriter and has performed locally as well as out of state at songwriters symposiums.   She is currently studying music theory and composition at New York University.   She is the only artists to score two blog number ones in 2024:  the aforementioned "I've Fallen For a Dragon" and "Should I Be The Man".

Another band to watch is Widely Grown, an Americana/Alt-folk band out of the Jersey City scene, with hints of country and bluegrass as well.   They formed in 2007, and the band's recorded debut came out in 2022, and have played not only Jersey festivals like Maplewoodstock, and Wildwood's Barefoot Country Music festival, but toured nine states in total.   A new album,  Victory Lap, is soon to be released.

After 15 minutes of speeches by town officials and festival organizers, Celebration Singers take the stage.   A change of pace from the usual festival fare, the singers are a multi-generational choir that have performed for 85 years and counting.

At 4:40, the festival takes on a Latin lilt with Groupo  vallenato y Folklorico Los Costenos, with sounds emanating from Colombia.

Finally, headlining is probably New Jersey's favorite long-running reggae ensemble, Verdict, who have been around for decades, and who performed at the festival in 2022.   They will close things out at 6 PM.
