A bit late, so I am going to try and make this one brief.
Last week, I mentioned that the top spot is going to be up for grabs between much of my current Top 10 on the SNS 100. Well, who emerged is a very familiar face. Make that TWO familiar faces.
They've been calling them "The Dynamic Duo", and the entry "The Song of the Summer". Well, Deb Browning and Marlisa Kay Small are making a strong case for that title as "Sunshine and Summertime" moves back to #1 after getting as low as #5 last week. The song is still atop many regional beach music lists, or at least the top 3.
The song logs its sixth week atop the Scenes 'n' Soundwaves chart. That is the most weeks logged at the stop since Bakar's "First Time" did it in early 2021. "Sunshine and Summertime" is the third song to move to the top spot three different times, following "Lo/Hi" by The Black Keys (2019), and "Hero" by Michael Kiwanuka (2019-2020).
"Sunshine and Summertime" first hit the top spot on May 5, and stayed there for two weeks, before yielding to Jalen Ngonda's "If You Don't Want My Love" for three weeks. Deb and Marlisa, re-took pole position on June 16, and remained for three more weeks. And after Sylvia Johns Ritchie and Hozier got there for a week apiece, and Lissie for two, the "Dynamic Duo" have returned to the number one position.
I haven't yet computed my "Song of the Summer" tally yet, as there will be four more weeks to go, culminating with the September 9th edition. But with the song at or near the top (it hasn't dropped below last week's #5 position), it's a good bet that it will indeed rule the season. Stay tuned.
Having said all this, much of the top ten is a free-for-all. In fact, nine points separate the top 9 positions on the chart. Dua Lipa holds at #2, while Royel Otis moves 7-3 with "Foam", albeit losing its bullet. Starbuck drops a notch to #4 with "Beach A Go Go", and Lissie drops all the way to #5 with "Night Moves", from the top spot last week. Billie Eilish's "Lunch" moves 9-6. Teddy Swims' "The Door", Sylvia Johns Ritchie's "Good Love Don't Come Easy", The Holiday Band's "Got It Bad For You" (13-9) and Orbis Max and Lindsay Murray's "Fields" (11-10).
In the second ten, there are two big movers: The Tonez' "I Hear You Knocking" (19-15), and the Impact winner, Kings of Leon's "Nowhere To Run" (22-19).
The Mover of the Week was last week's Top Debut; Jalen Ngonda's "Here To Stay" moving 60-30. Other prime movers include Post Malone and Blake Shelton's "Pour Me A Drink"(48-32), Dustin Ahkoui and Sharon Woodruff's "Back By Popular Demand" (68-46), and Marsha Morgan's "Knockin' Down Doors" (72-49).
TIPSY-ING THE SCALES: Another big mover is Shaboozy's "A Bar Song" (Tipsy) which moves 55-35 on its third week on SNS. But the big story on this one is that it logs a fifth week atop the Billboard Hot 100. It stays ahead of "I Had Some Help" by Post Malone featuring Morgan Wallen, which is still #2 after six weeks at the top. For a while it looked like "I Had Some Help" was going to run away with "Song of the Summer" honors on Billboard, and while it still holds that title for now, Shaboozy is going to make it a battle. That tally ends on Labor Day, a week before mine. "A Bar Song" right now is a solid #2, so stay tuned.
Britain's Pip Millett, a retro-soul/blues singer is featuring on this week's Top Debut, "Got to Be Good", by Gotts Street Park, debuting at #40. |
DEBUTS: Every now and then, I hear a song that absolutely blows me away. I've been repeating an adage about the fact that there still is good music out there, you just have to dig deep to look for it. Well, to quote Post Malone, I had some help this week. Thanks to Spotify, who twice recommended the song "Got to Be Good" by Gotts Street Park featuring Pip Millett. This one gave me the chills, it's so good. Beginning with a nice organ intro and a steady beat, it's a slow blues soul maybe with a little psychedelia thing. Pip Millett's vocals kick in, and you could swear Amy Winehouse has come back from the dead. To be honest, Amy never sounded so good. There are early Adele vibes here as well. The song debuts at #40 to nab Top Debut honors.
So, just who is Gotts Street Park? Seems that they are a trio based in Leeds, England and are pretty much a group of songwriters, producers, and instrumentalists. While not an official "Internet" collective like Orbis Max or Einsteins Dad, they do churn out stripped-down retro soul and employ a myriad of guest vocalists. According to an interview with Clout's Kiernan Rogers, the band has been together since 2015 and had produced for several U.K. based groups and artists. Member Joe Harris told Rogers that their influences come from "old soul and jazz" and older recordings "with live instruments". Atmospheric, if you will.
While the band released its first records back in 2020, it was their debut album, 2023's On the Inside that yielded "Got to Be Good" as the first single, released in October of last year While Pip Millett (more on her below) guests on this single, others accompanying Gotts Street Park on this set include Rosie Lowe, Olive Jones, ENNY, Flikka and parthenope. There are also a few instrumentals by just the band itself. Hopefully after "Got to Be Good" runs its course (and its prospects look good for a long run on SNS), I will explore this album and band further. The song has over 23 million streams on Spotify, so they've been really making noise across the pond.
But just as important as the instrumentation, it's Pip Millett's vocals that make this a complete dreamy effort. So, I looked a bit into Ms. Millett's career.
Her real name is Georgia Willacy,(Millett is her mother's maiden name, and "Pip" was a childhood nickname) and was born in Manchester, England. Despite her sounding a bit like Amy Winehouse, she actually grew up listening to the likes of Joni Mitchell and Bobby Womack. Later influences are Lauryn Hill and Bob Marley, and you can hear traces of those artists in her music.
Pip's first release came in 2018 with the single release of "Make Me Cry". In 2019, she released a cover of Otis Redding's "Try A Little Tenderness". Her first full length album was 2022's When Everything Is Better, I'll Let You Know. She's had several EP's as well, her current one, Tell Jimmy I'm Fine, was released on June 7 of this year.
In the coming weeks, I will feature one of her own compositions. To me, it makes doing this blog week in and week out for almost 14 years worth the while when you find music like this.
OTHER DEBUTS: Suki Waterhouse, coming off a couple of top 20 blog hits, debuts with "Supersad". This should make it three in a row for the London, England artist. who, incidentally, is engaged to actor Robert Pattinson, is releasing her second album Memoir of a Sparkmuffin shortly, and this is the lead single. This is a rather, up-tempo, dreamy, new wave-ish, driving song that should keep up her profile. It's already moving up the Triple-A airplay lists.
Next up is the return of Long Island-based quartet Øffguard, after a three-year hiatus. The band, fronted by Matt Weiss debuts with "The Minute". It continues their emo-slanted alt rock, and it's done very well. These guys really know how to make music. You can definitely see influences like Jimmy Eat World, Fall Out Boy, and My Chemical Romance in their music. A couple weeks ago, I mentioned the band Isn't It Always is very similar; "The Minute" should follow IIA's "Dream Again" up the chart. Band nearly hit the top back in 2017 with "Strawberry Moon", and this one could follow suit.
Other entries include the latest by Milky Chance, 'Naked and Alive" that has the familiar band's beat (I keep thinking of the video to "Synchronize", and this one is along those lines); SupaPurple, which I believe is another "Internet Collective" band. Daniele Silvestri, a drummer from Italy, had forwarded me some songs from this group. Silvestri, of course has participated on projects from Orbis Max, Einsteins Dad, and his own outfit, The Wheelgunners. "Heaven" is a nice, throwback to country- and folk-inspired rock, with harmonies that remind me of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. This kind of music never goes out of style, and should make some noise here.
Tim Izzard is back, under the guise of his fictional cartoon band Sir Prize and the Twomorrow Knightz, who enter with "Glitter Balls". Nobody can recreate the glam rock era of the early 70's better than Izzard. Definitely in the Ziggy-era Bowie realm mixed with a bit of Mott the Hoople, with of course a bubblegum-ish slant. And as is his norm, he throws in a few of the artists of that genre as well as the Roxy club venue. Another palatable offering from Izzard and the gang.
Winnetka Bowling League, the outfit fronted by Matthew Koma (who, like Suki Waterhouse, is married to an actor, in this case, Hilary Duff), returns with "This Is Life", and the three-piece band is helped out by Dawes and Medium Build. The song is from their debut full-length album, Sha La La, recently released (after several EP's, and three number one blog songs going back to 2018). The song (and the album as a whole is a rather introspective look at Koma's life. This one is a mid-tempo song, rather emotional in spots, and is a far cry from the "Kombucha" days. Perhaps a bit somber but has a chance.
Rounding out the debuts are "Glory"by The Airborne Toxic Event, another mid-tempo song with feeling and emotion. Both "Glory" and "This Is Life" are on the Tremors list, my "bubbling under" chart.
