WE ARE NOW heading into the heart of the summer, and one look at the Scenes 'n' Soundwaves 100 definitely shows it. Seven songs in this week's Top 10 (actually 7 in the top 9!) are on at least one beach chart, whether it be regional (in the Carolinas), or on the national beach charts.
While I've always been a fan of beach music (going back over 40 years, even more since the songs I got into then were from the 1950's and 1960's, it wasn't until 2018 that these songs started affecting my blog chart. And it wasn't until a little over two years ago that a song classified as "beach music" hit the top spot, that being "Take Me By the Hand" by The Six Piece Suits and Deb Browning. The genre often dominated the whole SNS 100, placing as much as over a quarter of the songs on there.
The annual Carolina Beach Music festival, which was held on June 1, 2024, featured many acts in the beach music genre. |
For a while, however, it appeared that beach music was slowing down, at least here: There were no number one songs for five months, and it was Starbuck that bookended that drought. Bruce Blackman and company's "On the Sand" topped the list on November 3, 2023, and it wasn't until "Spring Break Shake" hit the top on April 14 of this year that the drought was broken. In the past two and a half months since, we had a five-week run of "Sunshine and Summertime" by Deb Browning and Marlisa Kay Small, and now this week, "Good Love Don't Come Easy" by Sylvia Johns Ritchie tops the list.
The winter dry spell for beach music probably doesn't come as a complete surprise, since it is summertime that brings people to the beach, with dance clubs often taking place outdoors. Plus, many of the beach music heavyweights release songs just in time for the summer season. And it helps that many of the artists heavily promote their single through some sort of contests. More on that below.
Reviewing my top 10 this week. it is indeed "Good Love Don't Come Easy" hitting #1, becoming the first blog topper for Sylvia Johns Ritchie. She also becomes the seventh "Carolina Queen" who performed on last year's charity single cover of "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)" to hit the top of SNS. Sylvia joins Deb Browning with six #1's (including duets with The Six Piece Suits, and Marlisa Kay Small), Marlisa herself twice (paired with both Deb and Jerry West), Laura Kepley (with The Tonez), Sharon Woodruff (with The Main Event Band), Lesa Hudson (with Rick Strickland), and Rhonda McDaniel (with the Carolina Coast Band).
"Good Love" continues to top Don Mark's Surfside Top 10; it's been there for weeks, and it's also #10 on Mitch Harb's chart Meanwhile, Deb and Marlisa's "Sunshine and Summertime", which drops to a very close #2 (but could still move to the top a third time, we shall see), is topping multiple charts. It is #1 on Riptide Radio, Justin Rouse's On the Boardwalk Top 5, and The Wave; #2 on Don Mark's chart, and #5 on Pat Gwinn's On the Beach survey.
While my #3 song, Hozier's "Too Sweet" isn't on any regional chart, it moves up a notch to #28 on John Hook's Beach Music Top 40. That is in addition to holding at #1 on the Hot AC, Alternative and Triple-A airplay charts this week, and #7 on the Hot 100.
Topping the non-beach songs this week, and #4 overall is Lissie's "Night Moves", a song released back in 2019 that is getting notice from her appearance in the Loudermilk series, thanks to it being released on Netflix early this year.
But we go back to the beach with the #5 song, "Flip Flops and Margaritas" by The Mac Daddy's Band. The song is at #10 on John Hook's chart and had appeared on some regional charts recently. The beach blitz continues at #6 with Sabrina Carpenter's "Feather" which moves to #3 on John Hook's chart.
Another non-beach song is at #7, that being Dua Lipa's "Illusion", but two more song are right behind: Starbuck's "Beach a Go Go" moves 13-8; with the song moving to #14 on Don Mark's chart, and #11 on the Beach Radio Big 30 list. Finally, moving 19-9 is "Dance" by The Pink Slips Band. "Dance" had been #1 on Riptide Radio, where it drops to #2 (behind "Sunshine and Summertime), and is also behind that song at #2 on the Justin Rouse list as well as The Wave (where it was #1).
Finally, Jalen Ngonda's former blog #1, "If You Don't Want My Love" (which SHOULD have been played on beach stations in my opinion), rounds out the top 10 this week.
While many of the songs do talk about summer, some artists are actively promoting their song via contests. Deb and Marlisa, for example, are having a "T-Shirt cutting party". Don't ask me what it entails, but it does sound interesting. Meanwhile, Lesa Hudson, whose "Groovalicious" moves 28-22 this week recently conducted a promotion for the song with listeners filming themselves dancing and "getting their groove on", for prizes.
BACK TO THE CHART: While there is only one beach song in the second 10 (that being Rhonda McDaniel's "Better" (20-14) there are other big movers in that region. C. Lynne Smith is on the verge of her second top ten as "Follow It Down" moves 18-11; Indie band Shang Hi-Lo's grab Impact honors with "Op-Operator" (21-15); Juliet Callahan's "Burning", which topped SNS in late 2022, returns there with a re-mix version of that song (as "Burning Up", 23-17), Teddy Swims has his second SNS top 20 as "The Door" goes 26-18; similarly, Royel Otis has its second in that region with "Foam" moving 32-19 and also garnering Mover of the Week honors, and finally Billie Eilish at last has a blog top 20 song on her resume as "Lunch" moves 30-20.
NEWIES: The Top Debut isn't exactly new; it was released in 2014, but I had heard the song accompanying while looking on TikTok, l, and thus added it. The song is "Make You Mine" by Public, an American pop band. The song, definitely in the indie-pop lane reminds me of the alt-rock group Keane which had some alternative hits in the 2000's.
Right behind is the latest from Ray Lamontagne, "Step Into Your Power". The blues-folk artist, who hit the top spot on SNS back in 2016 with "Hey No Pressure", takes a lighter approach this time. It's more accessible and melodic; but he retains his folksiness. A very palatable outing from Lamontagne that should do well.
The Heavy Heavy (not to be confused with The Heavy) had a pair of blog top 20's last year, and they return with "Happiness". One listen to this song, transforms you back to the 60's; the song could be well at home during the original British Invasion. A little folk mixed in, but it has the groove of that decade. Of course, I'm a sucker for that sound; thus, this should do very well. It moves 24-16 on Triple-A, and action should follow here.
Clairo (real name: Claire Elizabeth Cottrill) is from Massachusetts, and had several mid charting blog songs, but she scores with her latest, "Sexy to Someone", her first in a few years. Sort of a dreamy take on the singer-songwriter genre, sort of understated, but with some emotion. It kind of reminds me of Janet Jackson's "Because of Love", but the song is much more than that. With the female singer-songwriter in vogue the past couple years on my chart, this one should fit right in.
Speaking of female singer-songwriter legends, next is Norah Jones, with "Running". The daughter of Ravi Shakar has been at it since 2001, and several of her songs have charted here, most recently with her vastly different take on The Chipmunks' "Christmas Don't Be Late" in 2021. Like the Clairo song, this one is on the dreamy side but in a slightly different direction. Beautifully delivered vocals and melodic. Love the piano notes punctuating the awesome production on this. Has sort of a 60's soul vibe to it. Her blog best so far was 2012's "Happy Pills" (#42); this one should obliterate that peak.
Making its blog debut is British duo Good Neighbours, with "Home", which is a nice slice of alternative pop/rock, with a slow tempo that could make noise; Beach Weather, another act from Massachusetts, enter with "High In Low Places", a haunting piece of alternative pop; the band reached #34 last year with their alt-rock hit "Sex, Drugs, Etc"; and finally veteran band The Offspring, with "Make It All Right". After a "My Sharona"-type info, the band goes into their usual punk-revival rounds. The band really hasn't changed in 30 years, they still sound like kids. It's like they borrowed parts of prior songs and incorporated it into this one. But it's The Offspring, so it should do well.
FINALLY, on the Billboard Hot 100, we have a new #1, that being "A Bar Song (Tipsy) by Shaboozy. It drops Post Malone and Morgan Wallen's "I Had Some Help" back to the runner-up spot.
