AGAIN, this is going out late, thus it will be brief. Last week my wife's sister and her boyfriend came up from the Charlotte area of North Carolina for the week, thus we were entertaining. I hope you all had a nice Fourth of July. There are many topics I would love to discuss, but it will have to wait a while. In the meantime...
As we start the month of July, it's apparent that Post Malone and Morgan Wallen will be on the fast track to be Billboard's Song of the Summer for 2024. "I Had Some Help" moves back to the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100, for a sixth week, knocking out Sabrina Carpenter's "Please Please Please", which falls to #5. It's the longest running #1 song this year on the big chart thus far. The song is echoing Wallen's "Last Night" which was in and out of the top spot a year ago and was that year's "Song of the Summer". Post Malone is a hip-hop artist by trade and has been around since 2016, but it appears that he is transitioning into country music, with his soon-to-be-released album, F-1 Trillion. Aside from his duet with Wallen, he also debuts at #12 on the Hot 100 with "Pour Me a Drink", another duet, this time with Blake Shelton. Ironically, he recently topped the Hot 100 with Taylor Swift, who started out as a country artist before moving to pop. That song, "Fortnight" is currently #17 on the Hot 100, and #41 on the SNS 100, after peaking at #25 a few weeks ago.
On the SNS 100, "I Had Some Help" continues its upward movement, going from 64 to 50 this week. Malone first charted here in 2022 with "Love/Hate Letter to Alcohol", in a duet with Fleet Foxes; that reached #55 that year.
MEANWHILE on the blog chart, it appears that we may have a front-runner for "SNS Song of the Summer" as well, as "Sunshine and Summertime" by the beach music duo of Deb Browning and Marlisa Kay Small. Already touted as such in the beach music community, the song remains at the top of the SNS 100 for a fifth non-consecutive week. That too, is the longest running #1 song this year thus far on the blog tally. That contest started the week of May 12, and it had appeared it would be a tight race between it and Jalen Ngonda's "If You Don't Want My Love", which had a three-week stay, and which interrupted Deb and Marlisa's run at the top. However, the Ngonda song is fading as it drops to #5 this week. "Sunshine" is #1 on Riptide Radio, The Wave (4 weeks in a row), and top 5 on several other beach music charts.
Hanging tough at #2 is another from the Grand Strand, "Good Love Don't Come Easy" by Sylvia Johns Ritchie. Ms. Ritchie tops Don Mark's Surfside Top 20 this week.
However, it's the #3 song, Hozier's "Too Sweet" that is racking up the impressive chart numbers. Originally a #1 song on Billboard's Hot 100, it still sits at #7. But it leads three airplay charts this week: It is number one on Hot AC, Alternative and Triple-A, and moves 32-29 on John Hook's Beach Music Top 40 listing. Here, "Too Sweet" originally peaked at #3 a few weeks back, dropped as low as #9, but has resurged in the past couple of weeks. It was almost a year ago that Hozier's "Francesca" topped the blog chart, and now his first entry since then has a renewed chance to do the same. If it does, it will be the artist's third blog-topper.
Sabrina Carpenter, already entrenched in Billboard's Top 10, enters that area on the SNS 100 with both "Espresso" and "Feather". |
As Lissie's 'Night Moves" bullets from 9 to 6, we have three new songs in the top 10, two of them by Sabrina Carpenter who has been hot lately. While I have yet to add "Please Please Please", her two prior singles enter the top echelon: "Espresso", after stalling at #11 for a couple of weeks, moves 11-8, while "Feather", holding at #4 on the John Hook's beach list, bullets 15 to 10. Also moving into the Top Ten are The Mac Daddy's Band's first SNS entry, "Flip Flops and Margaritas" advancing 12-7.
While Dua Lipa, Starbuck, and Suki Waterhouse continue to advance in the second ten, we have three entries into the Top 20. C. Lynne Smith snags the Impact award with the topical "Follow It Down" (21-18). That is followed by two beach music songs: The Pink Slips Band's "Dance", still #1 on Riptide Radio's chart, moves 23-19 and Rhonda McDaniel has her third Top 20 (second solo) with "Better" (22-20).
The middle part of the chart is very competitive with strong songs only able to move up a notch or two, but big movers include Royel Otis' "Foam", the Mover of the Week (45-32), Beabadoobee's "Take A Bit" (44-34), and The Tonez' "I Hear You Knocking" (54-42).
DEBUTS: An interesting array of adds this week, headed by the latest from country artist Lainey Wilson, "Hang Tight Honey" at #83. It's a nice, uptempo foray with great guitar work, and of course Lainey's vocals; she is definitely having a great time doing this song. It's definitely her strongest entry since her blog top 10 "Watermelon Moonshine" last year.
The Decemberists follow their top 20 "Burial Ground" with "Oh No". There seems to be a lot of Latin-infused songs lately. First Starbuck's "Beach A Go Go", then Gary Lowder's "Wild Fire", and now this one. While the horn section sounds more like The Kinks' "Come Dancing", the rhythm does have that Latin feel. Initially the mix of Colin Meloy's voice and the instrumentation sounds a bit strange, but you get used to it. A little different from past releases, but this band has been a fixture on SNS since almost the beginning of the blog, and should be a big chart presence both here and on Triple-A.
Alice Merton is probably most remembered for her blog #2 "No Roots" from 2017, but she returns with "run away girl". Alice definitely belts the vocals which just keep moving. A fixture on Sirius XM Alt Nation's "Alt 18", she is very busy delivering the sound of this song. A lot of "oh oh oh's" in this catchy outing.
One of my all-time beach music favorite songs was "Inventory on Heartaches" by the husband-and-wife duo of Donny and Susan Trexler. While Susan scraped the chart a few months ago with "Whole Lotta Me", it's Donny's turn as he debuts with "Just a Little Bit of Your Love". Like The Holiday Band song I added a couple of weeks ago, this is the sound that made me fall in love with Carolina beach music. Very retro-soulful and that bouncy beat that puts you in shag heaven. Again, listening to this takes you down to the boardwalk at North Myrtle Beach.
Another beach artist, J.D. Cash, enters with "Chances Are". This is a great soulful, and tender ballad. Heck, after you shag to "Just a Little Bit of Your Love", you can slow dance to this one. Cash's "This Song Will Last Forever", really didn't do so here; it peaked at #99, but this one should be here for quite a while. It enters at #91.
Also entering is L.A. based AWOLNATION, with "Panoramic View", which is another ballad and an ambiance-filled one at that. New Jersey-based band The Gaslight Anthem covers a Billie Eilish song, "Ocean Eyes", and dresses it up, alternative rock style, with strong vocals as well as backup ones. Finally, there's Smitty and the Jumpstarters, on the beach charts with the bluesy George Thorogood-like "Let's Walk". A nice jam!
