This one is very late, so it will be brief. There's a few topics I want to cover in subsequent weeks, namely my conversion to a Spotify-based playlist (from iTunes), as well as the trend towards releasing singles/songs every couple of weeks (as opposed to months). But that's down the road.
Deb Browning holds onto her number one position with "Think I Found Forever", holding off a charge from "Golden Age" by Colorjoy, in a close four-way race at the top. Pushed down to #3 despite another point advance is Say She She's "In My Head". Resurging again to #4 is "Got It Right (The First Time)" by Rick Strickland and Lesa Hudson. The song, a former blog number one for five weeks was as low as #6 but has made significant gains back towards the top, as the song tops five beach music charts this week. Rick and Lesa debuted their new album, Power of Two, and if the featured songs from that livestream are any indication, there's a wealth of great new music on there. At #5, "Weightless" by Arlo Parks is still gaining, but has dropped down from its #2 peak. It's a toss-up as to what will head the list next week. If Deb Browning holds on for another week, it would tie her "Here Comes Amazon" for her longest stay at #1, three weeks. If Colorjoy reaches the top next week, it would mark lead singer Emily MacMahon's eighth straight chart topper.
EINSTEIN'S REDUX: Entering the Top 10 this week is "The Shoop Shoop Song". You will notice that I changed the billing from "The Ladies of Beach Music", to "The Carolina Queens", as that is the way the song, by fourteen of the area female beach singers, are listed on a couple of the beach music charts. When the song came out, there really wasn't an official name. The YouTube video listed it as The Ladies of Beach Music, but Carolina Queens sounds much better in my opinion. It recalls the internet band Einsteins Dad, headed by Steve Shouse which didn't have a name originally as well before Shouse came up with the moniker. Goldie Boutilier also hits the top ten with "Cowboy Gangster Politician"
It looks like beach music is surging once again as three new beach songs enter the top 20, led by Jimmy Ogburn's Salt Luvs Pepper's "Love Me Like I Love You" moves 21-16 to grab Impact honors, followed closely by Marlisa Kay Small's "Anyway", last week's Top Debut (37-17) and Allie Privette's "Ain't Nobody" (24-18). Also entering the top 20 is Steve Lacy's follow-up to his #1 blog and Billboard hit "Bad Habit" with "Helmet".
Further down, Hannah Goodall, with "The Girl Who Once Loved You" is the Mover of the Week (76-44).
DEBUTS: While the crop of adds this week is abundant (nine debuts), it's quieter than in recent weeks. The Top Debut is all the way down at #77, that being Metric's "False Dichotomy". The band which had my #1 song of 2009, has perhaps their best since then. Very rhythmic in the presentation, it's very catchy and could explode with a few listens. Four-time blog topper Ed Sheeran is back with "Eyes Closed" a rather sparse production, but sort of reminiscent of Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" at times. This one might take a few listens as I am a sucker for fully produced songs. Then again, I felt the same initially about "Bad Habits" and that went to the top.
GO ASK ZIGGY: Tim Izzard follows up "Walk the Walk" with another from his Deepfake 99 EP, "Alice Pearl". In a similar vein as his "The Night I Played Ziggy's Guitar" hit from last year, he puts an interesting spin on the "Alice in Wonderland" story. Would be nice, next to Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" on a playlist. There's also an artist named Alice Pearl out there, could it actually be about her?
The next debut, definitely out of left field is "Rhythm of the World", by The Cowsills. Yes, THOSE Cowsills....well three of them anyway. The legendary family "Sunshine Pop" group of the late 60's that inspired The Partridge Family TV series, has released an album of which this is the title track. While much of the band is gone via several tragedies, what is left is a trio consisting of Susan, Bob and Paul. Of course, this is more than 55 years later, and the sound has changed as these "kids" are now in their sixties. The band, with various members of the family, reunited in 1990. A bit folksy as well as an eclectic production (including some phase shifting), the songs, sung lead by Susan, sounds a bit different but when they harmonize, it does feel like the vintage version of the band. The threesome will tour on the "Happy Together" package, headlined by members of The Turtles, The Classics IV, Gary Puckett, Little Anthony, The Vogues, and Joey Molland from Badfinger. The "Happy Together" tour comes to Morristown's Mayo Center for the Performing Arts on June 9.
St. Paul and the Broken Bones return with "Sea Star" in their usual blues style, and more in a subdued way, it follows the top 20 "Minotaur". Jenny Lewis, once of the band Rilo Kiley and who had a top ten blog hit as part of the duo Jenny and Johnny, "Big Wave", as well as a couple of solo blog entries, most recently 2019's "Red Bull and Hennessy" is back with the Fleetwood Mac-ish "Psychos", that is sort of quiet, yet grabs hold of you. It's been 12 years since Grouplove had a top ten blog hit, but they've been chart regulars since, and their new one "Hello" should also do well. Some great harmonies and some catchiness to it should propel them up the blog chart. Next is JW Francis' "Swooning", with a rolling 80's vibe to it, and finally The Backseat Lovers' "Growing/Dying", a rather mid-temp, haunting song. Their "Kilby Girl" hit top ten in 2020, and this is their first blog entry since.
