This one will be very brief as I wanted to get this out before my trip.
The year has just passed the one quarter mark, but we already have an act with its second number one, as Say She She's "In My Head" ascends to the pole position. The Brooklyn-based female-led band thus scores its second blog chart topper in 2023, following "Trouble", which led for the first three weeks of this year. While "Trouble" has technically been out since last fall, it was officially released as a single, along with "In My Head" a few weeks ago. The band has been very active, both in touring and releasing songs. In fact, the seven-piece band has released yet another single, "Reeling" in mid-March, while their 2022 album Prism is still getting airplay; the track "Pink Roses" is on WEQX, an alternative station based in Manchester VT. Don't be surprised if I add another song of theirs very soon. Could 2023 be the year of Say She She? Unfortunately, none of these songs have made any other chart, which is sad, but the buzz is definitely there.
"In My Head" makes it to the top just barely over Arlo Parks' "Weightless" which IS on some alternative airplay charts; it's #26 on the Radio Monitor Triple-A list. Moving up fast, however, is Deb Browning's "Think I Found Forever" (6-3) vying for her fifth straight #1, and Colorjoy's "Golden Age" (5-4), which is now joined by "Beautiful People" (13-7). Women, or female-led bands thus own the top four this week.
This action drops Bubba D. Liverance and the Cornhole Prophets' "Ti Ta Ti Ta Ti Ta Ta", #1 for the last two weeks, to #5, and Rick Strickland and Lesa Hudson's "Got It Right (The First Time)", a five-time #1, dropping from 2 to 6. But they are still in the running to return to the top as the top seven songs are very tight. Meanwhile Devon Gillfilian grabs his second blog top 10 with "All I Really Wanna Do" (11-9).
Goldie Boutilier's "Cowboy Gangster Politician" has the Impact award this week (26-18), and last week's Top Debut, the Carolina all-star contingent The Ladies of Beach Music is this week's Mover of the Week, with "The Shoop Shoop Song" (47-27). By the way, I wanted to thank everyone for their feedback and sharing my blog piece last week regarding the song and the talented artists that were on it. It is very appreciated.
Six adds this week, headed by The Arcs' follow-up to the Top 10 "Eyez", with "Keep on Dreamin'", another tasty, catchy, alt-rock tinged effort. Dan Auerbach can do no wrong. Like "Eyez", it sounds like a female lead here. Although Auerbach is credited with lead vocals on both songs, the sound could come from Mireya Ramos, from the all-female band Flor De Toloache, and also Shae Fiol, who both share background vocals. The overall sound is unique with an organ added for full effect.
Next is Miya Folick's "Bad Thing", which is fully in the Arlo Parks-Say She She wheelhouse which so far seems to be the trend in 2023, and it should follow them up the blog chart. Two of the "beach ladies", Marsha Morgan and Sylvia Johns Ritchie, team up for "Boys Will Be Boys", a fun-filled, funky outing It's Marsha's first blog entry, and the very active Ms. Ritchie could have another "Not Tonight....".
Also new are Milky Chance's "Living In A Haze" which sounds a lot like their "Colorado" hit from a couple years ago; Portugal. The Man's latest "Dummy", a bit of danceable pop; apparently an attempt to get another "Feel It Still". It's a popular add at alternative, but I need to listen to it a few times to appreciate.
IN THE PIPELINE: Some key releases by blog favorites coming out later this week. I talked about Marlisa Kay Small last week, she is in the studio with Tim Sidden cutting new music; one song, "Anyway" is due for release April 4 (today, as I write this). Meanwhile, Colorjoy's third release from its upcoming album Golden Age, is entitled "Drops of Honey", which drops on Friday April 7. The duo will perform at The Rabbit Hole in Brooklyn on April 15. Also due on the 7th is the latest from Juliet Callahan, "Depth of Soul". The singer-songwriter, recently relocated to New York City from the West Coast, has indicated that this is a more alt-rock oriented song, similar to her blog #1 song "Burning".
AND FINALLY......My wife and I are embarking on a trip to visit friends in Ocean Isle Beach, NC, which is very close to North Myrtle Beach, SC, the beach music capital of the world. We are slated to see Deb Browning and Marlisa Kay Small perform at the American Legion Hall in Little River, SC this Friday, which I am looking forward to. Perhaps we might be able to catch other local performers while we are there; The Rick Strickland Band will be performing at the Duplin Winery in North Myrtle Beach on Saturday, April 8. No doubt we'll, at the least, be exposed to some of the radio stations there playing beach music, and it might have an interesting effect on next week's chart.
