WE HAVE A NEW number one song at the top of the SNS 100 this week, as Rev Bubba D. Liverance and the Cornhole Prophets' "Ti Ta Ti Ta Ti Ta Ta" just edges out both Rick Strickland and Lesa Hudson's "Got It Right (The First Time)" and Miley Cyrus' "Flowers" for pole position. Just three points separate the top 3.
It's Bubba's first blog topper, following the top 10 performance of last year's "In My '64" which reached #7. Both songs are from the album Void Outlaw Dark Lion, which was released in 2021. Bubba was actually going to record a new song for release this month, but radio airplay in the Carolinas broke this record and it is climbing many beach charts. It is #5 on both Eric Bowman's The Wave survey, and Don Mark's Surfside lists, and #24 on John Hook's Beach Music Top 40. It becomes the ninth beach song to top my list since "Take Me By The Hand" by Six Piece Suits & Deb Browning headed the list in June, 2022.
Rick and Lesa's "Got It Right (The First Time)", which held the top spot for five weeks, holds at #2 for the second week in a row, and holds its #1 spot on Pat Gwinn's countdown survey. Thus, as has happened frequently over the past six months or so, Carolina beach music holds the top two spots here. Miley Cyrus' "Flowers", last week's blog topper, drops to #3, the week that it rebounds back to the top of Billboard's Hot 100 after a two-week stint at #2; it has amassed seven total weeks up top. As mentioned last week, it's the 13th song to top both mine and Billboard's charts since I started the blog, but so far not simultaneously.
While these top three songs, plus the #4 Stephen Sanchez's "Until I Found You" (which jumps back into the 20's in Billboard), have far outdistanced the pack for several weeks, some heavyweights are catching up to the lead group. That includes Arlo Parks' "Weightless" which holds at #5 but makes big gains, ditto for Say She She's "In My Head" (7-6). Any of these songs could contend for the top next week. Both Colorjoy's "Golden Age" (10-8) and last week's Top Debut, Deb Browning's "Think I Found Forever", which grabs Impact honors in a 27-9 move, can challenge the top echelon as early as next week. Jenna Ren's "Fool's Gold" inches into the top 10. Aside from Ms. Browning's new one, the only other Top 20 entry is Death Cab For Cutie's "Pepper", which has led the Triple-A airplay chart for several weeks. It's that bands first blog top 20 since "Northern Lights" in 2019.
WONDERFUL WORLD...: The Top Debut this week is the second release by Colorjoy, "Beautiful People", following the release of "Golden Age" two weeks, both in advance of their forthcoming album. If "Golden Age" was a natural extension of the duo's work with ScreenAge, "Beautiful People" branches out and reaches new heights. There's a lot going on here and it's all positive. Beginning with a loungey intro, Emily MacMahon's voice enters, a little rawer than the prior song, but very melodic as only this duo can. Emily has long been adept at carrying these songs; she sings with much soulfulness that anyone can muster. But the song is much more than her vocals. A great saxophone break in the middle of the song takes the one from "Golden Age" to further heights, and the vocal harmonies are excellent. Sam Novotny's drumming guides the song to a steady beat which adds to the experience. Stephen DeAcutis' production is top notch. With the current trend toward women's eclectic styles, "Beautiful People" will mesh in with what's in the top ten right now, and hopefully Colorjoy can latch onto this trend. They certainly delivered the goods.
DEBUTS: Eight other debuts this week behind Colorjoy, headed by "Hurricane Coming" by The Heavy. Not to be confused with The Heavy Heavy (don't you love it when there are bands with too similar names popular at the same time--remember The Verve and The Verve Pipe in the nineties?). This is the band that hit with "How Do You Like Me Now", the #2 blog "What Makes a Good Man", "Since You Been Gone (#7) and the most recent, 2019's "Better As One" (#13). This one is a bit different, but the impact from those prior songs is just as much. This one has some mid-sixties rock vibes mixed in with harder stuff from the subsequent decades and also has a Black Keys-vibe to it. It is catchy, and hook laden, and should be another hit both on alternative radio and my blog.
Last week I had commented on one of the beach music pages that "Ought to Be A Song" by The Pink Slips Band was the only one in Justin Rouse's Top 5 chart that wasn't on mine. It was none other than Deb Browning who suggested I check this one out, as the band nabbed the "Rising Star" award at the Carolina Beach Music Awards last year. Well, all I can say is that the song is awesome. It pretty much takes all elements of what beach music is all about. I love this song, and regret not adding this earlier. It's pretty obvious that beach music is not just a passing fad with me, and it will be just as strong this year as it was last.
Tame Impala had broken through a few years back, but since then, I wonder if they've gone commercial and becoming the new Kenny Loggins with songs from movies? Last year they teamed with Diana Ross for "Turn Up the Sunshine" from the last Minions movie, and now "Wings of Time" debuts, which is from the new Dungeons and Dragons flick. The song starts off with a riff echoing The American Breed's 1967 hit, "Bend Me, Shape Me" (what's with these intros taking from late 60's songs? Stephen Sanchez's "Evangeline" takes from Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey"). But since Tame Impala doesn't share the song, it's pretty much them and it's a good one, although a little more commercial than what you might expect, but it's a catchy one and worth exploring.
Next is Halsey's latest, "Die 4 Me", which combines her recent alt-rock venture with a traditional hip-hop beat that's been prevalent lately not to mention its auto-tuned vocals. But it's delivered with emotion and worth many listens. Songs like this made you actually like this genre. The Wombats return with "Dressed To Kill". A driving alternative song that makes a hard stance. It's been a while since this band had a blog hit, but this might have a shot. The 1975 have been around a lot in recent years, and "I'm In Love With You" is in the upper echelons of a few radio stations, and for me is their most catchy in a while.
Next is Lana Del Rey's seven-minute epic, "A&W", which goes through many changes. The first half is nicely done, both with the vocals and instrumentation. It's hauntingly beautiful, like much of her past work. Then, about more than halfway through, we get treated to more Billie Eilish-style spare hip-hop instrumentation. But it's sort of spacey and perhaps with a few listens this might catch on. Not bad. Finally, we have The National's 'Tropic Morning News", which is in the top 10 of the alternative airplay lists. I was going to dismiss this one, but I am getting hooked as the song progresses. You need to listen to the whole thing, thus has possibilities.
