As this point in time, I think I am the only one to appreciate new music, and to be honest, it's hard to believe I was going to give it up this year. And if you think it's about waiting for the new Colorjoy song to come out (due tomorrow as I write this), or the new Deb Browning due in one week, while that is true, but looking at what you have right now, you'll find out that the music currently on the SNS 100 is awesome, and that includes many of the new and recent debuts which are also long awaited.
Points-wise, "Got it Right (The First Time)" by Rick Strickland and Lesa Hudson is among the all-time point leaders in that category as it racks up its fourth week atop the blog list. That's the longest reign since January of last year, when "Dance the Last Goodbye" by Anna Lavigne also had a four-week run. And slipping into the runner-up spot is Miley Cyrus' "Flowers", which is having world-wide popularity. It tops Billboard's Hot 100 for a sixth consecutive week. It still has a realistic chance to be her third SNS blog topper here. For the second time in three weeks, "Until I Found You" by Stephen Sanchez drops from 2 to 3 in spite of bulleting. It moves up a notch to #31 on the Hot 100, so this record is still very much alive. Losing its bullet but still advancing is Rev. Bubba D. Liverance's "Ti Ta Ti Ta Ti Ta Ta" at #4. Any of these songs would normally be number one on a typical week. That shows you how good these songs are.
Next is Say She She's "Trouble" which has already had a three-week run at the top, but apparently, it's just been released as an official dual single with ""In My Head" (more on that one later). If this song catches onto the chart, this great song will be sticking around for a time to come. Blake Shelton's "No Body" is top 10 on many beach music charts and is hanging tough on my chart at #6. Another long runner is Six Piece Suits and Deb Browning "It Don't Get Better Than This" as it tops several beach charts, including a sixth straight week at The Wave. The former #1 SNS song still sits at #8. "Eyez" by The Arcs moves 13-10 for the Dan Auerbach project's second top 10. Positions 13 to 27 are very competitive with some great songs there as well with all but two bulleted. Wet Leg's "Angelica" (Impact award) and Tim Izzard's "Walk the Walk" are new to the Top 20.
Last week's Top Debut, Devon Gilfillian's "All I Really Wanna Do" 54-32 garners the Mover designation this week
I mentioned above that Say She She's "Trouble" was recently released as a single in spite of me jumping on the song months ago. It was released with another track "In My Head", which takes the Top Debut this week. A cool organ starts off the song and persists throughout the song, but it's the vocals that in a quiet way take you by surprise. A cool loungey song should garner the septet another huge blog hit, and let's hope this gets national airplay as well.
While Deb Browning, Colorjoy's prior incarnation ScreenAge (twice) and Anna Lavigne have all succeeded themselves at #1, the first act to actually do it was The Revivalists, whose first new song since then, "Kid" is the second highest debut. Their previous album Take Good Care yielded 3-for-3 in number one songs, and this is the lead single fromthe new Pour It Out Into the Night. This is a beat that reminded me of "40 Day Dream" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, a top 20 blog hit from 2010. It takes a couple of listens to really get into it, but the shuffling beat should make it a candidate for them to pick up where they left off four years ago.
The new Depeche Mode single "Ghosts Again" is an ode to their keyboard player Andy Fletcher, who passed last year. |
I had gotten really into synth-pop in the 1980's, thanks to bands like Depeche Mode and that Brit band debuts with "Ghosts Again". While it might seem that this a sort of "comeback", this band has never really been away, putting out albums every few years or so, and managing to make the alternative charts each time. Still, there's something cool about their new one. While this echos their late 80's heyday in some ways, this one sounds every fresh, and this is full with emotion, no doubt because this is an ode to their keyboard player Andy Fletcher, who passed last year. It's a mid-tempo song but a very introspective one. The band has landed on my blog before, in particular "Heaven", #12 in 2013, and most recently "Where's the Revolution", #38 in 2017. This one should top them both.
It's great when a new song is delivered to you personally, and even more so when it's a gem. I had the pleasure of receiving Salt Luvs Pepper's new song, "Love Me Like I Love You", the follow-up to the top 30 "Lovin' Arms", from leader and saxophonist Jimmy Ogburn, which again features David Cornelius on vocals. The band seems to stretch out a bit more on this one than on the last, and has an added flavor to it, as a lot is going on here, from the soulful vocals, Ogburn's wailing sax to the back-up harmonies. Should top "Lovin' Arms".
The Beaches return with "Orpheus". The female quartet offer a steady, unstated vocalized beat that is very catchy and should top the recent "Grow Up Tomorrow". Another superstar, Beck is back after a three-year hiatus. The two-time blog topper, whose catalog goes back thirty years, enters with "Thinking About You". A change of pace ballad for him, he still proves his genius with his vocals and instrumentation. His versatility is in full effect here.
King Princess had a top five blog hit with "1950" four years ago and she finally returns with "Let Us Die" a lo-fi / eclectic chugger, and Edie Bens makes her blog debut with "Don't Love You Anymore", another flavorful song that has loads of potential.
The question, with the new Colorjoy and Deb Browning coming out in the next couple of weeks is, with all these great songs, will somebody be robbed of a high chart position?
We shall see.
