Beach Music Songstresses Gather For All-Star Charity Song (SNS week of 3/26/2023)

WE ARE THE CAROLINAS:   What if all the artists that you like and listen to gather together and cut a song?    You know, like back in the 1980's when contingents like Band-Aid and USA For Africa all got together and recorded a song.     That song would be released, and the proceeds would go to a charitable organization.

Fourteen regional Carolina beach music female artists got together to record "The Shoop Shoop Song", produced by Tim Sidden.

Well, for me, that sort of happened last week.  Fourteen women who have been a part of the Carolina beach music scene over the years did just that.     Producer Tim Sidden of the Cat5 Band as well as helming Deb Browning's songs, got them all together to record a song.     And while, no, it's not a "We Are the World" or a "Do They Know It's Christmas", but rather a cover of a classic 1960's soul/beach song, it was all in good fun, and it would raise awareness of not one, but TWO charities.   More on that later.

Not having followed the beach music scene closely until a year ago, I wasn't too familiar with some of these talented artists.    But just in those twelve months alone, I am very familiar with many of them.  In fact, nine of the fourteen, have made my Scenes 'n' Soundwaves 100 during the past couple of years.

The song?   "It's In His Kiss", also known as the "Shoop Shoop Song", was a Billboard #6 hit by R&B artist Betty Everett in the spring of 1964.    Twenty-seven years later, Cher covered it, and it went to #33 on the Billboard chart in 1991.      The women who got together for this cool version, true to the original, were Marlisa Kay Small, Sharon Woodruff of The Main Event Band, Deb Browning, Rhonda McDaniel of The Carolina Coast Band, Christina Black, Laura Kepley of The Tonez, Molly Ford, Lesa Hudson of The Rick Strickland Band , Susan Trexler, Sylvia Johns Ritchie, Karen Clayton of The Castaways, Allie Privette, formerly of Sea-Cruz and Midnight Allie, Angela Resignalo from The Catalinas, and Marsha Morgan.

And while gatherings of artists aren't new to producer Tim Sidden, he had wanted to do this to benefit and raise awareness of some charities that he believed in.     In the first video with the song, he writes:

"A few years ago I wanted to record a song featuring all the ladies of Beach Music on the East Coast. While this has been done before, I wanted to do something special and feature a few special charities close to me. All the ladies I spoke to where on board and very excited about doing this project.

While we were trying to find a song that would best showcase these amazing ladies, Sharon Woodruff presented the idea to me about the song "In His Kiss - The Schoop Schoop song".

It was the perfect song for all the ladies to sing and sing they did. "

As mentioned above, many of these artists I am already familiar with.  Deb Browning of course, has torn up the blog chart over the past year with four number ones, (and another one well on its way).   Lesa Hudson has three blog top 20's to her credit, including her #1 duet with Rick Strickland, "Got It Right (The First Time)" still #2 this week.    Rhonda McDaniel also hit #1 with The Carolina Coast Band's "The Thing About You", still at #87 this week after 36 weeks on the chart.   Sharon Woodruff reached #2 with her Main Event contingent with "Poor Side of Town".  Laura Kipley peaked at #12 with The Tonez' "Me and My Music"Sylvia Johns Ritchie has recorded solo as well as in various combinations; she topped out at #5 late last year in a duet with Doyle Wood, "Not Tonight (I Have A Heartache)".   Karen Clayton, who won the CBMA award for Female Vocalist, is a part of The Castaways, currently moving up the chart with their cover of "Mr. Dream Merchant", at #44, Allie Privette is at #31 with her take on "Ain't Nobody".   But probably the first woman on this list to make my chart is Angela Resignalo.   Her band The Catalinas hit #60 in 2021 with their version of "Working On A Groovy Thing".

As for the others on the recording, Molly Ford, like Ms. Privette, had also performed with the Sea-Cruz Band.  She still performs solo with her back-up band in the Murrells Inlet area of South Carolina.     Christina Black also plays as a solo act, notably at  Sugure's Pub and Eatery in North Myrtle Beach but has performed all along the Grand Strand, and she has many top 10 beach hits and even made the national Blues charts.   Marsha Morgan has had an impressive resume as well.  She garnered four CBMA nominations for Female Vocalist in the last seven years or so and has sat in on Cat 5 Band performances as well as performing solo.   Susan Trexler, another from North Myrtle Beach and originally from Charlotte North Carolina, is a seasoned performer as well; a recent release from her is "Bad Girl".

Finally, Marlisa Kay Small partners with Ms. Browning on many of her gigs, usually on Thursday nights at The Patio nightclub on the waterfront in Little River SC.  In 2018 she was crowned Ms. South Carolina in the 2018 Ms. Senior America pageant and finished among the top 10 runners-up in the national pageant held in Atlantic City.   Aside from performing with Deb, she owns and runs "Marlisa's Wig Studio and Day Spa" in Little River, SC.   Her charity "Wigs For Cancer" is one of the sponsors of the song.    Ms. Small was diagnosed with cancer in 1991 but, like her singing partner, is a survivor.   Since 2010 her company has provided wigs and hair pieces, free of charge, to patients undergoing treatment.  Her business has recently extended this service to children as well who are undergoing treatment.   For more information on "Wigs For Cancer", check out Marlisa's Wig Studio and Day Spa at https://www.marlisaswigstudio.com/, as well as the website www.wigsforcancercharity.com .

The other sponsoring charity is "For The Love of Vitiligo.", founded by Mitzi Love in March 2021.  Vitiligo, which Ms. Love has had for ten years, is a disorder that causes skin to lose its color, and is notable for pale patches, and that there can be several causes of it, one of them could be traced to changes in the immune system.    Michael Jackson is probably the most notable example of a celebrity who had this.  Kimbra, a singer-songwriter probably most noted on this blog as a featured artist on Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know", my #1 song of 2012, also has this condition.   You can find out more about For The Love of Vitiligo on Mitzi's website:   fortheloveofvitiligo.com – Vitiligo Awareness Ministry.

Tim Sidden has set up a video and website: www.beachcharity.com . There is a contest. A preliminary video has been posted which the visuals are messages from Tim regarding the making of the song as the recording is heard. The object of the contest is to try and identify who is singing at what point in the song. All 14 songstresses are heard two different times on the song.

Below is the video.

The song is this week's Top Debut at #47.

CHARTWISE: Another battle at the top of the SNS 100 as Rev. Bubba D. Liverance and the Cornhole Prophets hold off Rick Strickland and Lesa Hudson to claim a second week at #1 with "Ti Ta Ti Ta Ti Ta Ta".   "Got It Right (The First Time)" holds at #2 for a second week after a five-week run at the top but very close are the number three and four songs:  Say She She's "In My Head", and Arlo Parks' "Weightless", respectively.   Any of these songs could move to the top next week, and don't count out Colorjoy's "Golden Age" or Deb Browning's "Think I Found Forever" at 5 and 6 as they continue to make big moves and they have an outside chance as well.

The top four monopoly is broken as both Billboard Top 30 songs, Miley Cyrus' "Flowers" (3-6) and Stephen Sanchez's "Until I Found You" (4-7) move down.   However, "Flowers" is still #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for an eighth week.    The Arcs and Jenna Ren complete the top 10.

In the second ten there are some good movers, including Devon Gilfillian's "All Really Wanna Do" (15-11), Tim Izzard's "Walk the Walk" (17-15) and last week's Top Debut and this week's Impact, Colorjoy's "Beautiful People" (37-13).  Death Cab for Cutie's "Pepper" can only move up one notch to 19, and The Six Piece Suits and Deb Browning's former blog number one "It Don't Get Better Than This" regains its bullet as it still tops a few beach lists but is pushed down to #20.

Goldie Boutilier's "Cowboy Gangster Politician" nabs Mover honors (38-26) and Yeah Yeah Yeah's "Wolf" (31-23) , Steve Lacy's "Helmet" (46-34) and The Heavy's "Hurricane Coming" (55-43) also make impressive moves.

NEW SONGS:   As mentioned above, The Ladies of Beach Music have the Top Debut.   That is followed by Orbis Max's "R U OK".   While the online contingent has a good rock song with "Whatever You Think It Is" with just three of the members, "R U OK" is back to a full contingent with guest members, co-lead vocalist Lisa Mychols and guitarist Ed Ryan, along with five of the band members.    Orbis Max, which snagged two top 20's last year that featured Tim Izzard, deliver a change of page heartfelt ballad.  Some great harmonies with main vocalist Dw. Murphy exchanging vocals with Ms. Mychols.    A very soulful, cohesive effort here should provide them with another blog hit.  It sort of is a cross between popular era Fleetwood Mac and the fictional Daisy Jones and the Six (by the way, if you're a music fan, you need to check out that Amazon Prime series, I might do a blog on this when I am finished watching it).

Six other debuts this week:   Perennials Silversun Pickups, with "Empty Nest", definitely in the alt-rock lane with a steady beat; Donna Missal again moves in a new direction with "Flicker", while more in her sparse Billie Eilish style of her last album than her bluesy rock stance of her debut, this one has a more hi tech-oriented production, but resembles her blog hit of last year "To Me Your Face is Love".   Has possibilities.  Hozier's "Eat Your Young" has developed a buzz with a Hot 100 entry and presence on some alternative and Triple-A.  Melodic and soul drenched, it should easily top the recent "Swan Upon Leda" and maybe even put him back in "Take Me To Church" territory.

Jennifer Cintron hit my top 10 last year with "Run", still on my chart at #96, and she follows that up with "Shine Your Light", also from her 2021 album Sinner Saint.   A rather eclectic ballad that should fit in nicely with the other women dominating the charts these days.     "Rescue Me" by Dirty Heads, a hip-hop/rock hybrid, and "Amnesia" by M83, a rather orchestrated vibe, round out the debuts.
