GETTING IT RIGHT: This week, the beach music duo of Rick Strickland and Lesa Hudson vault into the #1 position on the Scenes 'n' Soundwaves 100 with "Got it Right (The First Time)", accomplishing it in just three weeks. This ties the record for the quickest rise to the top, and the first song to do so since Adele's "Hello" accomplished the feat in November 2015. The only other songs to do the trick were "I Feel It In My Bones", a holiday entry by The Killers, in December 2012, and Fitz and the Tantrums' "Out of My League" in March 2013.
Rick and Lesa are the principals of The Rick Strickland Band, but this is their first duet recording since 2012. They, of course, have released solo outings regularly, and for Rick, this is his second straight #1 song, following "You're the One For Me". It's the first blog topper for Ms. Hudson, who peaked at #6 with "Sunny Days" and #11 with the long-running "Breathless", which is still on the chart after 35 weeks. The two artists have recently concluded their annual "Sunny Days" cruise on the "Wonder of the Seas" ship.
"Got It Right (The First Time)" also makes four of the last five number ones for Carolina beach music, and in which all four songs have featured either Strickland or Deb Browning. The song knocks Say She She's "Trouble" out of the top spot after three weeks in pole position. Stephen Sanchez's "Until I Found You" drops to #3 despite a big increase; the song moves up a position on the Billboard Hot 100 to #28. Rev. Bubba D. Liverance's "Ti Ta Ti Ta Ti Ta Ta" advances to #4, while Miley Cyrus' "Flowers" moves up to #5, and garners a third week at the top of the Hot 100.
"Got it Right" is actually the biggest mover on the chart, but since it already has the #1 designation, the Mover award goes to Ria Mae's "The Old Me". "Burning" by the Yeah Yeah Yeah's grabs the Impact award.
The Top Debut goes to "Eyez", by The Arcs, the side project by Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys, with what sounds like a female lead on this, but still a catchy song as per Auerbach's usual work. Another winner. It's the new album Electrophonic Chronic, which follows 2015's debut, Yours, Dreamily. That album yielded the top five "Outta My Mind". Meanwhile, Wet Leg follows "Wet Dream" with "Angelica"; first-time-to-the-blog, Jenna Ren, with "Fool's Gold", Carolina Dreamers follow their #1 "Hey Girl, Hey Boy" with the swing-filled "Sugar Pie Baby", Donna Missal is back with the lead single from her third effort, the Billie Eilish-like "Insecure"; Death Cab for Cutie's best-in-a-while "Pepper", Cigarettes After Sex, which had two blog top 10's in 2018, with "Pistol"; and The Driver Era with "Malibu" (not the Miley Cyrus song). The song is the duo's second; the first, "Low", reached #1 in 2019.
CORRECTIONS: Last week, I mixed up two of the "Carolina" beach music bands. Last week, the song "New Shoes, Let's Go Dancing" was attributed to the Carolina Dreamers on the SNS 100 when it should have been the Carolina Blue Dots. The chart has been corrected.
In my next full blog, I will discuss this year's nominees to the so-called Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Also, Deb Browning's next single, "I Think I Found Forever" will drop March 9. That is sandwiched in between two Colorjoy songs. If you think this week's SNS 100 is competitive, just wait a few weeks!
