I had a rough week as I was under the weather, so this one will be brief. Rick Strickland and Lesa Hudson's "Got It Right (The First Time)" maintains the top spot on the SNS 100 for a third straight week. The song also reaches the top spot on DJ Pat Gwinn's beach music chart as well and is gaining on most of the other charts. It has a comfortable lead over the #2 song, the equally retro "Until I Found You" by Stephen Sanchez, which still bullets. It moved back up the Billboard Hot 100 slightly to #32 there. But breathing down its neck is Miley Cyrus' "Flowers", which is a close #3, but tops the Billboard Hot 100 for a fifth straight week. Without a doubt, had it not been for the nostalgic-sounding top two ("Got it Right" reminds me of late 60's-era beach music and "Until.." revisits the late 50's), the contemporary sound of "Flowers" would have already given Miley her third blog #1, but it will have to wait. At a solid number four is Rev. Bubba D. Liverance's, "Ti Ta Ti Ta Ti Ta Ta", also gaining in points and on many beach music charts. The song is now on Spotify so that should earn many more plays as well. Still strong at number five is Say She She's "Trouble". The Top 20 Impact award goes to "Eyez" by The Arcs, which is gaining in alternative and Triple-A circles (27-15) .
As you might expect, Rihanna, in the wake of her Super Bowl halftime show, makes moves on several songs and she reaches #1 on Billboard's "Social 50" chart which measures the relative popularity of the artists. However, I was expecting big moves on the Hot 100, but it really didn't happen. Although her recent "Lift Me Up" moves 20-15 here on the SNS 100, the song, which had debuted at #2 several months ago, but dropped considerably since then, moves back up from 52 to 41 on the Hot 100 (I had expected a big move back into the top 10), and three of her older songs, including "Umbrella" re-enter the charts. But what bothers me on the Billboard chart is the song at #17, "Under the Influence" by Chris Brown, the same Chris Brown who physically abused Rihanna when they were dating, listed above all of. No justice in the world, I guess.
The Heavy Heavy, Gary Lowder and Avril Lavigne enter the top 20. Caroline Rose grabs the Mover award this week with "Miami".
Devon Gilfillian, who had a #1 blog hit with "The Good Life", has the Top Debut with "All I Really Wanna Do", his soulful vocals laying over a trippy beat which should result in another winner. Country singer Sam Fender enters with "Spit of You", a soulful outing for him which should top his two 2019 blog mid-charters; Back in 2017 when I wrote my "I Love Beach Music" blog, I mentioned a group called Midnight Allie. Although the group didn't chart on my blog, the leader Allie Privette comes out with a cover of "Ain't Nobody", a 1983 hit by Rufus with Chaka Khan that hit #44 on my year-end Top 100 that year; this version is faithful to the original. Fall Out Boy, who seem to be the last surviving rock band, goes all out in the genre with "Love From the Other Side". Samuel Holden Jaffe, aka Del Water Gap, which had a mid-charter with "Perfume", #68 in 2019 returns with "Ode To a Conversation", Taylor Swift follows "Anti-Hero" with "Lavender Haze", and Sam Hunt, coming off the big country and huge beach music hit "23", with "Water Under the Bridge", and finally YUNGBLUD, who supports Avril Lavigne on her latest, has the solo "Tissues".
TIDAL WAVE: In the coming weeks there will be more heavyweights. There have been four acts that have succeeded themselves at #1, and three of them are coming out, or already have come out, with new music. You already know about Deb Browning's new one dropping March 9, as well as Colorjoy---the direct descendant of ScreenAge, on March 3, but the first act to do the trick, The Revivalists, are back with "Kid", which has already been released and should debut on my blog list next week. Say She She has released a double A side, the blog hit "Trouble" you know, but "In My Head" is also out which will debut as well. Two-time blog topper Beck also has a new song. It'll be very busy in the next few weeks.
