I am running out of superlatives to describe Deb Browning here on SNS. Just when you thought she couldn't make any more of a showing, she has shone once again. "Here Comes Amazon", her holiday parody of the old Gene Autry song "Here Comes Santa Claus" jumps from #5 to the top spot after only four weeks on the list. The song, originally recorded in 2020 but just released commercially a couple weeks ago on her Here Comes Christmas album, knocks out another of her songs, "It Don't Get Better Than This" (with The Six Piece Suits). And, with two other tracks from that album, "All Over the World" (this week's Mover) and her Jim Quick duet, "Santa Claus is Back in Town" debuting, 2022 looks like it's a Deb Browning year much like ScreenAge was in 2021.
In doing so, "Here Comes Amazon" puts Deb Browning in several blog record books. First of all, this is Deb's fourth number one blog song this year (including two with the Six Piece Suits). She is only the second artist to have at least four songs hit the top in a calendar year; ScreenAge placed five songs at the top last year. Counting the Suits' with those two songs, the only other acts to have had multiple number ones in 2022: Anna Lavigne and The Black Keys.
As "It Don't Get Better Than This" drops to #2, it's only the fifth time in blog history that an artist has replaced itself at number one. The Revivalists were the first to do it with "You and I" and "Change" in 2019. ScreenAge did it two separate times in 2021: First with "North Star" and "Think Again", then just a couple weeks later with "Going Back" and "Questions". Finally, earlier this year, Anna Lavigne replaced her "Dance the Last Goodbye" with "This Time". Ms. Browning joins the above artists in having the top two songs in a given week.
It's also Ms. Browning's fourth straight number one song, which trails only Fitz and the Tantrums and ScreenAge (both with six) for consecutive songs. And finally, "Here Comes Amazon" becomes the third holiday song to top the blog chart, following The Killers' "I Feel It In My Bones" in 2012, and Katy Perry's "Cozy Little Christmas" in 2019.
With Rick Strickland's former #1 "You're the One For Me" inching down to #3, this is the first time that Carolina beach music has the Top 3 in a year that has seen the genre taking the SNS 100 by storm. "Amazon" is the seventh beach music song to hit #1 in 2022, something that had never happened before this year.
THE INDIES FIGHT BACK: While shag music continues to dominate the chart, indie artists are making a mini comeback of sorts. We've already seen Juliet Callahan hit the top (currently at #4), and Jennifer Cintron (currently at #5) do well, but King Tappa, Say She She, and Local Natives make inroads into the top 10, holding down positions 6 through 8. Meanwhile, Blake Shelton scores his first blog top ten hit with "No Body". The Voice coach (and host of the new Barmegedon series moves to #9 on the list. The whole aim of this chart was to show different styles and genres side by side (like top 40 radio used to be) and it will continue to do so, at least until I decide to give this all up.
In the second ten, Alvvays' "Easy On Your Own" moves 15-11 becoming the Canadian band's biggest blog hit to date (surpassing the #13 peak of 2017's "In Undertow"), while Maneskin's "Loneliest" , New Jerseyan Sharon Van Etten's "Mistakes" (Impact award) and Wet Leg's "Wet Dream" also make significant moves.
A HOLIDAY STATE OF MIND: All six debuts (and one re-entry) are of the Christmas variety as we are getting into the heart of the season. Topping the debuts is Lesa Hudson's "Santa Can You Teach Me How to Shag". Originally recorded and released in 2012, and celebrating its tenth anniversary, it's picking up notice again this year. Definitely recorded in an early blues style (similar to "Merry Christmas Baby"), she sounds like she's having a blast doing this one. This should ride the beach music wave to the top part of the chart. Meghan Trainor's interpretation of "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" also debuts, and relative newcomer Lauren Spencer Smith's "Single on the 25th", an original, debut, but Lizzo's cover of Stevie Wonder's "Someday at Christmas", and finally Kelly Clarkson's annual single release "Santa Can't You Hear Me", a duet with Ariana Grande also make debuts. It's interesting to see the pairing of Clarkson and Grande, as their "Underneath the Tree" and "Santa Tell Me", respectively, seem to be the two songs released during the last decade to make the charts, amongst the much older songs on the Hot 100.
WHICH BRINGS US TO: This week brought on the flood of holiday songs to the Billboard Hot 100, as there are twenty-five of them. However, it's Taylor Swift's "Anti-Hero" that clings to the #1 spot this week, holding Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" to the #2 spot. Ms. Swift held on to the top, thanks to a bunch of remixes of the song. Similar to Adele's "Easy on Me" holding Mariah at bay for a week last year at this time, it's probably temporary and just postponing the inevitable. Behind Mariah are the usual suspects: Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" moves up to #3, Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bell Rock" at #5, Burl Ives' "Holly Jolly Christmas" at #6 and Andy Williams' "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" at #9 (in the same order they finished last year).
Two things here: While it's most likely Mariah will conquer the top spot-on Billboard again, don't count out Taylor. Two years ago, her "Willow" debuted at #1 for a week right around Christmas time, pushing Ms. Carey to #2, although Mariah returned to the top and "Willow" fell to #33 the following week. And my prediction that perhaps Brenda Lee's "Rockin'..." might overtake "All I Want...." is probably unlikely at this point, but I can hope! It would be cool to see the still-living Ms. Lee, now 77 years old, see her perennial holiday hit, recorded and released at age 13, finally reach the top spot.
