SO THIS WEEK, we have a red-hot Carolina beach music singer with three weekly awards on this week's SNS 100, including #1, the passing of a beloved artist from one of the most popular bands of all time, and an "upset of sorts" for Billboard's #1 song of the year, so, okay, so where do we start?
Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac passed away after a short illness last week. She was 79. |
Let's start with the passing of Christine McVie who gained fame as a member of Fleetwood Mac. While it may seem that Stevie Nicks is often thought of as the face of the band, Christine joined well before Stevie, when the band was transitioning from a blues band to a more rock-centric outfit. Originally known as Christine Perfect, she had recorded a solo album as well as being with a blues band called Chicken Shack. After winning an award from the British trade magazine Melody Maker, she had left the band. She had married one of the Fleetwood Mac founders, John McVie (he was the "Mac" of the group with Mick Fleetwood), and shortly thereafter, she joined that band.
Ms. McVie contributed many songs to the band, both as a writer and as lead singer. With the band's profile enhanced by the additions of Ms. Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham, Christine's talent was still very much evident. She was lead singer and/or songwriter on the band's hits such as "Over My Head", "Say You Love Me", "Don't Stop", and "Little Lies". Despite divorcing John McVie in 1976, she remained a fixture in the band
Christine stayed with the band until 1998 when she stepped down, largely because of a fear of flying, which was eventually treated. However, she had lost interest in current music for quite a while. She did return to recording with a solo album in 2013 and rejoined Fleetwood Mac a year later.
Christine died after a brief illness on November 30, at the age of 79. She will definitely be missed.
DEB DOMINATES: Turning to our own Scenes 'n' Soundwaves 100, where Deb Browning and The Six Piece Suits' "It Don't Get Better Than This" lives up to its name and scores the #1 this week. It's the third number one for Deb this year; including two with the Suits. In a year that otherwise hasn't been dominated by anyone other than Ms. Browning herself, she has taken hold of 2022; only one artist had as many as two blog toppers, that being Anna Lavigne, who had the first two number ones of 2022. Since it's Deb's second with The Six Piece Suits, that band also now has two chart toppers this year.
But that's not the whole story with Ms. Browing. Her holiday entry "Here Comes Amazon" moves 11-5 to grab the Mover of the Week honors and is a serious contender for the top spot as early as next week; she also has the Top Debut with "All Over the World"; both songs coming from her just released Here Comes Christmas set. Yet another song from that album, "Santa Claus is Back in Town", a duet with Jim Quick has been getting airplay on beach music stations as well, and could debut next week. Finally, her former #1, "3 More Minutes", which topped the blog chart this past summer (and garnering "Song of the Summer" honors), tops two beach music lists this week: Mitch Harb's Beach Party Top 25, and Ray Scott's Riptide Radio list. This action causes "3 More Minutes" to reverse course and move 32-26 on the SNS 100 after 28 weeks.
If there's any bad news at all for Deb Browning it's that her "Take Me By the Hand", her first song with Six Piece Suits, drops off the chart after 34 weeks. Still, it's been quite a year for Deb Browning, and there's still a few more weeks of 2022.
Rick Strickland's "You're the One for Me" drops to #2 in a very close race that also includes Juliet Callahan and Jennifer Cintron at #3 and #4, along with "Here Comes Amazon" at #5. King Tappa's "9 to 5" storms into the Top 10 for the reggae artis'ts third entry into that realm. Say She She's "Trouble" grabs the Impact award (the only one that Ms. Browning doesn't have this week) in a 27-14 move; Local Natives' "Just Before the Morning" (34-14) and Maneskin's "The Loneliest" (26-17) also make impressive moves.
Glass Animals' "Heat Waves"is Billboard's #1 Song of 2022. |
GLASS ANIMALS HITS BILLBOARD'S CEILING: Billboard has announced its year-end Hot 100 list for 2022. While I had assumed that Harry Styles' "As It Was", thanks to its 15-week reign at #1 as well as over half a year in the top three would take the top spot, the winner is "Heat Waves" by Glass Animals, thanks to its record-setting 91 week run on the Hot 100.
"Heat Waves" only had a five-week run at #1 (compared to 15 for Styles) but broke two records this year. Aside from a new longevity record, the song reached #1 on the Hot 100 in its 59th week, by far the longest ascent to the top in the chart's history. And, since the song was listed in the upper part of the chart for the better part of two years, only departing the list a few weeks ago thanks to Lil Baby's occupation of much of the top 25 (and subsequent debut domination from Taylor Swift and Drake), the song accumulated enough points to solidly scoring the number one spot. "As It Was", despite its own domination in the spring, summer and part of the fall, didn't debut until April, five months after the start of the chart period, hence the disadvantage.
Despite the run-on Billboard (as well as scoring #1 on the Alternative Songs chart), the song didn't do well here. It was added to the SNS 100 way back in January 2021 and only reached #32 in a 25-week run. When the song finally hit the top of the Billboard chart, I readded the song, and it spent 11 more weeks on my list. The follow-up, "I Don't Wanna Talk", while #7 here, like most alt-rock follow-ups to hits, didn't make the Hot 100. And while "Heat Waves" has a rather pop/hip-hop feel to it, it was still nice to see an alt-rock oriented band score the #1 song on Billboard.
The entire top five on Billboard's year-end list, also scored on my SNS 100. Styles' "As It Was", which hit #1 here for two weeks, was the runner-up on Billboard; The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber's "Stay", which peaked here at #83 in a seven-week run, came in at #3 on the Billboard list; Adele's "Easy on Me" which topped Billboard for ten weeks and my chart for three, wound up at #4, while Ed Sheeran's "Shivers", which peaked here at #11, copped the #5 year-end spot on Billboard.
And if you're wondering why this list came out with still a month to go in 2022, Billboard's charting period, as has always been the case, is from mid-November of the prior year to mid-November of the current year, in order to properly tabulate the year-end awards.
AND CURRENTLY: Taylor Swift and Drake, who had huge debut dominations of the top ten in recent weeks, still remain #1 and #2 respectively with the singles from their albums, "Anti-Hero" with its fifth week at the top, and "Rich Flex". Sam Smith and Kim Petras' "Unholy" and Steve Lacy's "Bad Habit", both former number ones with the latter also topping my list remain at #3 and #4 respectively. And then......
We now have the official invasion of Christmas songs in the top 10, with Mariah Carey moving 25-5 with "All I Want For Christmas Is You"; Brenda Lee's "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree" with a 41-6 advance, and Bobby Helms' "Jingle Bell Rock" going 50-9, and a re-entry of Burl Ives' "A Holly Jolly Christmas" at #10. Last year these songs peaked at numbers one, two, three and four respectively, thus adding credence to the public being "stick in the muds" when it comes to listening to the same holiday songs each year. at the same frequency.
While it's becoming an annual routine for Carey to claim #1 again this year, I am wondering if Brenda Lee can overtake her with her sixty-four-year-old song this year. The song takes a much bigger gain than Mariah's and looking at a classic Christmas airplay chart this week on Cashbox's website, "Rockin' Around....", "Jingle Bell Rock" are #1 and #2, with "Holly Jolly..." #4 (Ives' version of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" both from the classic stop-motion Christmas special is #3). Andy Willaims' "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" (#5 there, #19 on Billboard), are all ahead of Mariah at #6.
Will the public finally get tired of Mariah's song? We shall see in the coming weeks! Should be interesting. Would be cool to see "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree", #3 on my Christmas Top 100 last year, move to the top.
NEW TO SNS: Deb Browning, as mentioned above, grabs Top Debut with her "All Over the World", a track introduced last year but included on her new Here Comes Christmas set. In sharp contrast to the novelty aspect of "Here Comes Amazon", this song is a plea for hope, peace and love all around the world. A great anthem for the holiday season should quickly move up the list during this season.
Two other holiday tunes debut. Lindsay Sterling has a cool instrumental version of "Joy to the World", kind of a up-tempo new-ageish violin filled outing that is very palatable and should make some noise here. Meanwhile, Alicia Keys debuts with her version of "Santa Baby", which is somewhere between the sultry Eartha Kitt original and the suggestive, sexy uptempo Madonna version in the 1980's. The tempo is closer to Ms. Kitt's take on the song, with a more haunting spin on it.
I'm not sure whether Taylor Swift's "Snow on the Beach" can be considered a holiday song; but it also debuts. From her new album Midnights, it had debuted at #4 in her complete Top 10 sweep of a few weeks ago, before falling out and further down the Hot 100. However, some formats are playing the song, which features Lana Del Rey. Also debuting are beabadoobee's 10:36, following two straight blog top 20's, and shows her in fine form, firmly in the alt singer-songwriter that Jennifer Cintron and Juliet Callahan's blog hits have shown; Caroline Rose's "Love/Lover/Friend". With both a #1 and #2 blog song to her credit, she mellows out on this one, kind of a Billie Eilish vibe with some masterful production. A little disappointing given some of her past songs, but this one might catch on with a few listens. Finally, Dave Gueretta and Bebe Rexha's "Blue (I'm Good)", sort of a pop-EDM hybrid that echoes (and obviously draws from) Eiffel 65's "Blue (Ba Da Dee)".
