WHILE SUMMER IS WINDING DOWN, the year of Carolina Beach Music continues to receive accolades in its cap. The new #1 song this week is "The Thing About You", by the Carolina Coast Band featuring Rhonda McDaniel. It becomes the third beach music song to top the list, following Deb Browning's solo "3 More Minutes", and her duet with Six Piece Suits, "Take Me By the Hand".
The top seven songs actually drop in points, so there was just some jostling for position, and the rankings depended on how much a song had fallen. But "The Thing About You" with just a slight decrease from last week has a comfortable lead, over the previous #1 song for three weeks, Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)", which drops to #2 (and holds at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100). Another beach song, "Poor Side of Town" by The Main Event Band featuring Sharon Woodruff, holds at #3; it's in a virtual tie with the Kate Bush song. If it overtakes it next week, it could be the first time that beach music holds the top two spots. Lizzo holds at #4 with "About Damn Time", and Deb Browning inches back up to #5 with the aforementioned "3 More Minutes". Closing the gap in the top 10, all bulleted, are The Black Keys' "It Ain't Over" (9-8), Einstein's Dad's "White Shoulders Lace and Leather" (10-9), and another beach music song, Rick Strickland's "Sandy" (14-10), becoming his first top 10 here.
The second ten features The AZIZ Project's "Thought I Was Falling in Love" (17-13), Jimmy Eat World's "Something Loud" (20-18), "Late Night Talking" by Harry Styles, (22-19), which grabs the Impact award and give the former One Direction singer two songs in the top 20, and O.A.R.'s first blog top 20 (and first blog entry since 2011), "In the Clouds" (26-20).
In the middle of the chart, two records by pop artists stand out. Last week's Top Debut, "Easy Lover" by Ellie Goulding featuring Big Sean grabs the Mover award in a 76-49 move. Beyonce, who spends a second week atop the Billboard Hot 100, makes an impressive move as well, going 81-54 with "Break My Soul'.
IT'S AN INTERESTING ARRAY of Debuts this week, as they come from different sources. Over the past few weeks, I was sort of in a stalemate as to what to add. Normally, they come from looking at various charts (usually Alternative, Triple-A, and Hot AC), or beach music lists. While many of them still come from those sources, there's a little variety this week.
While the Carolina Coast Band sits on top of the list, the Top Debut is another band with Carolina in its name, and of course another beach music act. "Cruzin' Down the Boulevard" by The Carolina Blue Dots has the Top Debut at #48. To put it mildly, there's so much to say about this song. While the band is still moving up the list with "I'm In Love With You" (71-61), this song is why I love beach music in the first place. The mid-tempo song is easy going, very nostalgic, and gives off a great feeling. I get chills when I hear this song. Not having been to Myrtle Beach since 1982, and last time in the area (Ocean Isle Beach to visit friends in 2019), I've often fantasized about the beach music scene. This song could be a great soundtrack to a visit down there. Punctured by horns, this is a gem. This should be a quick riser into the top 10 and a great candidate for the top spot in a few weeks. A winner!
Finally, I also want to thank Pat Gwinn, for providing me with this song; as it, like many of the beach music songs, wasn't available commercially. Pat is a DJ who hosts many radio and Internet shows focusing on beach music as well as oldies overall. The list of stations is nationwide, including WOLD here in New Jersey on 107.9.
Weezer has been one of the most consistent performers on the alternative charts for 28 years, and still scores consistent top 10's on the alternative airplay chart, but the last several entries by them haven't been able to crack the top 50 here. However, the band's latest, "Records" should finally score a blog hit. Mixing the early sound of the quartet with a dash of The Offspring (in the chourus) and a touch of Nirvana, even, echo a bit of the band's 2001 hit "Island in the Sun",, it's more emotional than recent outings. Should be their biggest blog hit since the twin #4's "Happy Hour" and "Africa" in 2017-18. The song is from the second of four "seasonal"-themed EP's, SZNZ: Summer (SZNZ Spring came out earlier in the year). A "fall" and "winter" EP's will soon follow.
Here's an artist "discovered" from an unusual source. I've often gotten messages on places like Messenger, Instagram and even Words With Friends. It's usually a picture of a woman looking rather sexy with either a "hello" message, or a canned message saying something like "I saw your profile and want to become friends". So, when I first saw a message request on Instagram from someone named Juliet Callahan, I pretty much thought that this was another "scam bot". The message read:
" I'm Juliet, sharing my love for music through my own lyrics and songs, wishing to connect to people. Actually not here often as it's my secondary account, it would be really awesome if you could add me on my official page"
It sounded like a "generated" page, but the "sharing my love for music..." part, of course piqued my interest. Sure enough, upon further research, she is an aspiring singer-songwriter from California, and thus I added one of her recent songs, "Burning". While it's along the lines of other female singer-songwriters, there's something about this one that stands out. It's got a strong production and guitar backing that compliment her very appealing voice. My mission of this blog is to try and explore as much new music by indie artists as I can. While she hails from the other side of the country, so does Pageants, and that duo is one of my favorites. Indie is indie no matter where it's from. "Burning" is a great song to introduce listeners to this cool artist.
Deb Browning did it not too long ago, but I don't think anyone else in the near-twelve-year history of the blog has done it, but Tim Izzard equals Deb's earlier feat with five simultaneous songs in the SNS 100. Already on the list solo with "Glam Rock Star (Tribute)", and "The Night I Played Ziggy's Guitar", and as part of the duo The AZIZ Project with "Thought I Was Falling In Love", Izzard debuts with this second song with the long-distance band Orbis Max, "Elvis Has Left the Building", the follow-up to the top 15 "Back of the Shelf" which is still on the list.
While it may appear that Izzard is moving away from glam-era David Bowie, he is...but based on the song's title, not the way you think. The song deals with (I think so anyway), how rock and roll has evolved from the days of Elvis though its various incarnations and eras, moving away from the early sound that Elvis pioneered. The song seems to encompass many of the styles that is suggested by the theme. Some great guitar work which echoes Eric Clapton at times and Izzard's vocals add up to a great classic rock piece. Should follow Orbis Max's last song into the top 20.
A few weeks ago, I added OneRepublic's "West Coast", so what happens? Radio stations (namely Hot AC) jump on "I Ain't Worried". It makes sense, as the song comes from one of the summer's blockbuster movies, Top Gun 2: Maverick. Slightly more "commercial" than the prior song, it's still a mainstream pop gem (or at least the way mainstream pop used to sound). A good effort for a perhaps underrated band. It follows another song from that movie, Lady Gaga's "Hold My Hand", #93 this week in its 14th week. This song should be a pop hit, but you know the current environment these days. Too bad.
While the above-mentioned Juliet Callahan song came to me via unusual means, "Come Back Home" by another blog newbie, Sophia Carson, was also captured in an unusual way. A few days ago, my wife and I watched the Netflix movie Purple Hearts. It was a powerful movie that we both loved, and the lead character in it was Ms. Carson, who is also an actress, (but who also performs the song in the movie with her band "The Loyal"). She plays an aspiring artist triyin to make ends meet with health issues, namely Type 1 Diabetes, and who marries a Marine in order to get health benefits, but later falls in love amidst complications. Ms. Carson's acting and singing career both started around 2016, and she has appeared in several movies and shows. Netflix, already responsible for Kate Bush's 37-year-old song becoming a hit, as well as some other shows that have spawned blog entries, should generate another winner here. It's Bubbling Under the Hot 100 this week, so perhaps we'll be hearing more about the song.
Two more entries by established bands debut this week: The Killers' "Boy", and "AM Radio" by The Lumineers. "Boy" has the Killers stamp of songs past with an Erasure/Depeche Mode 80's vibe to it; the Lumineers are in their trademark indie/acoustic folk mode.
IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS: This is a rather shortened blog this week as it's late, but perhaps next week I want to talk about the Woodstock '99 Debacle; based on a three-part documentary that aired on HBO Max recently. After that, it's my 12th anniversary blog special. I'm not yet sure what it will be about; I have a few ideas rolling along in my head.
