This is a very quick blog since I spent the last four days up in the Berkshires of Massachusetts meeting up with other geocachers, so I just wanted to get out at least the chart for this past week. On my next blog I want to tackle two subjects: The controversy surrounding ticket prices for Bruce Springsteen's 2023 tour; and the nominations for the Carolina Beach Music Awards. Also, I added only three new songs this week.
I did want to mention that Lizzo's "About Damn Time" dethroned Harry Styles' "As It Was" on Billboard's Hot 100, with the latter dropping to #2. More significant was Kate Bush's Stranger Things-revived "Running Up That Hill" which advanced to #3 on the big chart.
This week on the SNS 100, "Running Up That Hill" rises to #1, dropping Harry Styles to #2, with Lizzo advancing to #6. I can't remember the last time that the top 3 Billboard songs were also in my top 10 the same week. I do remember back in late March of 2012 that three of Billboard's top 10 were also in my top 10. In the March 24, 2012 issue, "We Are Young" by fun. featuring Janelle Monae was #1, followed by Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger" at #2; while "Somebody that I Used to Know" by Gotye featuring Kimbra was at #5, enroute to #1. On my chart dated March 12, of that year, the songs were respectively #3 (en route to #1), #8 and #2. That's about the closest we've gotten to agreement over the 12 years I've done this.
But my blog isn't going all pop. Aside from those three songs, the only other Hot 100 songs on my blog playlist this week are Styles' follow-up "Late Night Talking" (#9 BB, Mover of the Week #51 SNS); Halsey's "So Good" (#62 BB, #27 SNS); and Sia's "Unstoppable" (#78 BB, #18 SNS). Beach Music still accounts for half the top 10 (six if you count Lizzo which is on John Hook's Beach Music Top 40 survey). The Black Keys' "It Ain't Over" is the Top 20 Impact of the Week (22-17).
Again, due to this running late, I only added three new songs. The Top Debut goes to New Jersey reggae artist King Tappa, with "Are You Feeling It", at #73. The song is in the style of recent reggae blog hits by Pepper and Iration. A steady reggae beat keeps this one moving, and is the artist's, born Kurt Prince, best song since the Top 10 "No Drama" two years ago.
David F. Porfirio, coming off the #3 song "Dreamscape", takes a different tact with his follow-up, "Hathor". It is a more exotic song, which combines his familiar guitar work with Indian instruments such as the sitar. From the new Hathor the Movie in which Porfirio provided the soundtrack. A unique work that should propel the Queens instrumentalist back up the chart.
Finally, Curtis Harding, coming off a #1 blog hit with "I Won't Let You Down", follows it with a song from the TV series Arcane League of Legends, 'Our Love", which features Jazmine Sullivan. The soul artist continues in that style, a little more up-tempo than the last one. This has more of a Temptations, "My Girl" vibe and is still palatable. Ms. Sullivan adds a lot of vibes to this one as well.
