Playlist for Week of 7/12/2020

Just a "playlist week" this go-round.    Pepper heads the list for the fourth week in a row, followed by Donna Missal, Delacey, MGMT and Neon Trees.    New Jersey has a big presence, with eight of the top 20, including #2 and positions 7 through 10 (as well as two of the debuts).  Incidentally, Pepper's song "Change" is the third with that title to top my list, following Churchill's in 2014, and The Revivalists in 2019.

Among the adds this week is another song from Elise Farnsworth's debut, Turn Her Up, "In the Morning Light".  Perhaps a little more accessible, and less bluesy than my first featured track, the top 3 "Safety Net".  A slightly lighter approach with a sharper beat, her voice has that raw emotion.    Definitely worth checking out, as well as her EP.   She has the Top Debut this week at #73.

Close behind is Delta Spirit's "How Bout It".   The band is an indie rock outfit from San Diego, and early readers of my blog may remember the song "Bushwick Blues", which reached #2 on my playlist blog in late 2010 and #16 for that year.  That was from their second album History from Below.   The band had released two more albums, a self-titled effort in 2012, and Into the Wide (2014), the former yielding the #40 "California", the only other song of theirs that I had added to my playlists.    After six years, they finally release their fifth album What Is There.    A part-somber, piano-ambience of a song with stretched out, soulful voices, but definitely rock, especially with guitar solo in the second half of the song, it's a good bet to hit my top 20.

The third debut comes from The Backseat Lovers, with "Kilby Girl", their SNS debut.    The song is on their full-length debut, When We Were Friends, released independently last year.   Starting out as a jangly-pop effort, morphing into a rather dreamy rock-jam, it's a perfect song that gets better as it goes on.

Also added are current efforts from Dreamers, The 1975, and The Milwaukees, which, despite their name, are from Jersey City, and have a full rock ambience sound to them.   Finally, I re-add "Groceries", by Mallrat, aka Grace Kathleen Elizabeth Shaw, which had a brief run last year on my SNS 100 playlist.
