"Imagination" by Foster the People jumps from #3 to #1 on the SNS 100 dated September 8; becoming the L.A. indie pop band's fourth #1 on my blog. This followed their massive crossover hit "Pumped Up Kicks" (which reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100); "Coming Of Age" ( my #1 song for 2014), and "Best Friend". It puts them in elite company here: Only Adele and Rachel Allyn have matched that feat, and only The Black Keys and Fitz & the Tantrums have exceeded it.
Foster the People have churned out some great music over the past decade, with many of their songs sounding different. Since the end of last year, they have been releasing a bunch of singles every several weeks which will eventually wind up on their fourth album to be released in October. However, like many of the songs that I like, "Imagination" didn't chart; in fact, the next single release, "Pick U Up" is already getting some airplay on stations like Sirius XM's Alt-Nation channel which ignored "Imagination".
I will be adding "Pick U Up" soon, when in my opinion, "Imagination" runs its course. That would be the fourth single to be released in advance of the proposed album. Band frontman Mark Foster said that they didn't want to be pigeonholed into waiting for an album to be released, that they wanted to release these songs at various intervals, rather than having them all come out at one time after not being heard from in a while. All fourteen songs that I have added to my blog playlist have made my top 20.
Nick Waterhouse moves up from 5-2 with his latest "Song for Winners" with the only other bullet in the top 10 belonging to Band of Skulls' "Love is All You Love". Winnetka Bowling League's "Kombucha", a former SNS #1, inches back to the top 10, despite falling a notch on the Billboard Alternative chart.
"Old Town Road", which several weeks ago set a Billboard Hot 100 record for most weeks at #1, sets a dubious record on my blog. The song, which narrowly missed the biggest leap to #1, a couple months back, going from 19-2, then spending four non-consecutive weeks at #1, drops all the way to #12 this week, the biggest drop from the top spot. Zac Brown Band, Offguard and Brittany Howard enter the top 20 this week.
The Top Debut this week goes to Andreya Triana, with "Woman", a song that I heard while walking on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach. The Brighton, England singer/songwriter released her third album Life in Colour in May of this year.
