It was another close finish at the top of the SNS 100, my playlist of current or near-current songs that make up my blog playlist on my iTunes library. In fact, it was a tie between last week's chart topper, Lil Peep's "I've Been Waiting", and The Black Keys' "Lo/Hi". Both songs dropped from last week, but the Peep song, with features fellow hip-hopper Ilovemakonnen, as well as vocals by rockers Fall Out Boy, maintains the top spot as it had more points last week than the Keys song. It thus spends a third, non-consecutive week at the top. "Lo/Hi", however, does move up one notch, as the #3 song, Nick Waterhouse's 'I Feel an Urge Coming On" drops bit further than "Lo/Hi". Still, the top three songs are just five points apart and are still ahead of the rest of the pack. Any of the three could top next week's chart, but by then, there will be other contenders.
While Tame Impala at #4 takes a precipitous drop while maintaining that position, Jonas Brothers, The Big Takeover, and Beck all advance up a notch to 5, 6 and 7, respectively while still bulleted. The strongest of them is the Takeover's "Shy". The face that this is the only song of the three not charting anywhere gives further proof to the fact that gap between my tastes and what is currently popular continues to widen.
Two more contenders lurk behind those two songs: Telekinesis' "Like Nothin' (17-9), and Winnetka Bowling League's "Kombucha" (24-10) take big jumps---and again, neither of these great songs (love the hook on "Like Nothin'") are charting, although the Winnetka song is on the WEQX currents playlist, a station based in Manchester, Vermont. Country has its first top 20 entry in quite awhile as Thomas Rhett's "Look What God Gave Her" enters that region.
As for the debuts, leading the way is Tame Impala's follow-up to "Patience", "Borderline". Here they shed their free-form psychedelic leanings for a more rhythmic beat; it's more commercial accessible but it captures you and won't let go. Should be another top 20 entry here. It debuts at #77.
Close behind is the latest from The Raconteurs, Jack White's band, "Help Me Stranger", at #80. As it usually the case with White's music, you never really know what you're going to get. With a very mellow start, it turns into a mid-tempo chugger. I still think White is still the premiere guitarist and innovator of the 21st Century, and has been keeping the premise of rock music alive during these rough times. By the way, did you catch the final of the competitive-reality show The Amazing Race? One of the final tasks featured musicians in Detroit (White's hometown) playing The White Stripes "Seven Nation Army" over and over...and that song was going thru my head for a day or two afterwards!
Remember Phoebe Ryan? The artist, recommended to me by her friend Merrill Kenny who has known her all her life, and who is the only SNS "up and comer" who has made the Billboard Hot 100, by virtue of her featured performance on The Chainsmokers' "All We Know", debuts with her latest "A Thousand Ways". To be honest, her last few singles have pretty much put her in a rut, and she has lost her momentum after getting some great buzz a few years back. Her most recent EP, James Has Changed, was pretty much unlistenable as she tried blatantly to sound contemporary pop. In fact, I passed on her last couple of singles. Fortunately, her latest "A Thousand Ways", is a more refreshing listen. While not straying too far from the pop formula, she does inject a little more soul and vibe into the music, and is definitely worth a listen. While I do enjoy the song, I am wondering if time is running out for this talent, who was once part of the New York-based rock trio Town Hall. Perhaps, Ryan should go back to her alt-rock roots, a la Matthew Koma who has the awesome Winnetka Bowling League project and tour going on. "A Thousand Ways" comes in at #83.
Two "Lils" debut this week. The late Lil Peep follows his current #1 with "Star Shopping". Without any help this time, this posthumous effort is hip-hop/rap, but with a slowed down twist to it and is listenable. Perhaps I was obligated to add it because of the massive (for me) hit that preceded it, but it's a good song. And speaking of hip-hop and pop, if you hadn't noticed, the current number one song in the country for twelve weeks and counting is "Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X, and featuring country artist Billy Ray Cyrus (Miley's dad). I had resisted adding this for weeks, but now it's one of the longest running #1's in recent years, I had to at least add the song. Coming in on a unbulleted #93, it's actually not bad at all, worth at least a few weeks on my playlist. It seems to have launched a new but inevitable trend: Country Hip-hop. While perhaps it will upset purists of the genre, it actually comes off pretty well. Another song in that genre, "The Git Up", by Blanco Brown is set to debut next week.
Finally, the last debut is "Dissolve" by Absofacto. Absofacto is the moniker of Jonathan Visger who is also the lead singer of a band called Mason Proper, from Alpena Michigan. The song, although with the usual beat, is very melodic and soulful, and is a pleasant listen, and worth multiple listens, that will grow on you with several spins.
