Regaining the top spot on the SNS 100 this week is Lil Peep's "I've Been Waiting", which has a bit of an 1980's vibe to it (think "Don't You Want Me" by Human League). Dropping to the runner-up spot after one week at the top is Nick Waterhouse's "I Feel an Urge Coming On", which, like his other songs, is a throwback to the jazzy, blues style of the 1960's. Holding at number 3 is The Black Keys' "Lo/Hi", which recalls Norman Greenbaum's 1970 hit "Spirit in the Sky". Slipping into the number 4 spot is Tame Impala's psych-infused "Patience". That song squeezes Fitz & the Tantrums---a band who started out doing neo-soul-infused music but has now gone to the mainstream---to the #5 spot. It's the first time in some two months that a new song has gotten into the top 4. Jonas Brothers' "Sucker" inches up to #6.
The Big Takeover's "Shy" rockets from 13 to 7, is a vintage 1960's Motown styled entry, as is Elton John & Taron Egerton's "I'm Gonna Love Me Again" (23-15), which is from the biopic Rocketman. Too Much Sylvia's "Got the Rhythm", The Holiday Band's "Yours", and The James Hunter Six's "Whatever It Takes", of course, are Carolina Beach Music entries, a style rooted in R&B music going back to the 1950's and 60's. Finally, the Impact song this week, Meg Myers' "Running Up That Hill", is a cover of a Kate Bush song from the mid-1980's.
The influx of retro-sounding songs on my list, of course, isn't anything new. With current pop music becoming increasing irrelevant to me, hearing songs that evoke the styles of the past (especially with myself being in my early 60's) adds a fresh take of music from my life, with a current spin on it. It's something to ponder when I look back at this almost-finished decade of the 2010's, and something to place a memory in.
Elsewhere on the SNS 100, retroness surfaces on two covers of 1960's R&B which qualify as Beach Music, Dana Jones' "I Count the Tears" and Kid Rock's "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch"; Lana Del Rey's cover of Sublime's 1997 hit, "Doin' Time", which in itself is an adaptation of George Gershwin's "Summertime" from the 1935 opera Porgy & Bess. St. Paul & the Broken Bones "GotitBad" is a disco/funk romp straight out of the 1970's. Greta Van Fleet's music, including "You're the One" recalls vintage Led Zeppelin. Finally, Tommy James, and Bruce Springsteen, along with Elton John, are artists going back 45 to 55 years.
SUMMERTIME MADNESS: As I write this, it is the first day of summer (June 21), and summer songs also seem to start permeating the playlist. Aside from the current Lana Del Rey cover, Young the Giant debuts at #91 with "Heat of the Summer". The Hot Debut, The Black Keys' "Go" mentions summer. The song, the duo's follow-up to their fifth SNS #1, "Lo/Hi" is another straight-ahead rocker which should continue their success. Bring it on!
