You might be wondering why I am discussing him on a music blog. Many of his movies did have a music connections, and Reynolds himself even cut a song that made the Billboard Hot 100: "Let Do Something Cheap and Superficial", from one of his movies, "Smokey and the Bandit II" reached #88 in 1980. Seven years earlier, he cut his only album, 1973's Ask Me What I Am. But other than that, he did appear in movies that are known more for music or recording artists, or both.
You can start with Reynolds' breakthrough dramatic role, in 1972's "Deliverance", which yielded a top 5 hit single in early 1973, "Dueling Banjos" by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandel. Then, for a string of mid and late 1970's movies, he was paired with co-star Jerry Reed, an established country star who took up acting as well. 1975's "W.W. and the Dixie Dance Kings", was the first to co-star Reed; he appeared as the frontman for a country band. The next year came "Gator", which yielded a minor country hit for Reed with the title track. More noteworthy was 1977's "Smokey and the Bandit", which Reynolds played the "Bandit", with Reed playing the trucker Cledus "Snowman" Snow. Reed had a #2 country hit with "East Bound and Down" from that movie. The sequel, "Smokey and the Bandit 2", aside from Reynolds' chart hit, also yielded a Reed composition, "Texas Bound and Flyin'".
Other movies with musical connections for Reynolds include "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" (1982) which paired him with country legend Dolly Parton; and 1998's "Boogie Nights", a movie set in the disco era of the late 1970's which also includes another actor with some musical experience, Mark Wahlberg.
He will be missed.
CH-CH-CHANGES: Back to the current music scene (or should I say, MY current music scene since it's becoming more and more disparate; St. Paul & the Broken Bones have a second week at the top with "Apollo", but some big movers loom on the horizon. Jersey native Donna Missal jumps 11-2 with "Keep Lyin'", just missing tying the record for biggest jump to the top. Two Feet (5-3), Weezer (15-7), Greta Van Fleet (18-11) , Elle King, the "Impact song" (22-12), Metric (33-23) and Ed Sheeran (43-23). However, the biggest threat to the top is the James Hunter Six's Beach-music-infused "I Don't Wanna Be Without You" which jumps 70-21. Heard on the Sirius XM's "Carolina Shag" channel 4, which had be broadcast until Labor Day (which is now a Garth Brooks channel).
After the cool releases of the past few weeks, the new adds are more quiet this time around. Established groups like The Decemberists, Twenty-One Pilots are added as well as bands that have been on SNS before ("Parquet Courts), and a new act Mansiovain. I also add Taylor Swift's most recent single, "Delicate". Swift is an example of "selling out", chucking her country and soulful roots in factor of the current hip-hop/electronic dance music trend. Her attitude has also changed from one who connects with her audience to one that has distanced herself from her fan (or so it seems).
SOUNDS OF THE SUMMER: Billboard has announced its 2018 "Song of the Summer", Drake's "In My Feelings", which probably is no surprise since it has been #1 on the Hot 100 the last half of the summer. The recording crosses over to SNS, moving 91 to 79. Next week is the cut-off date for the SNS "Song of the Summer" which will be much different. Without actually looking at my spreadsheet, I would say there are four contenders for the ninth annual crowning. It will be announced in my next blog.
