They may hail from Nashville, but there's nothing really country about Moon Taxi, an alternative rock band from "Music City". They've been around since 2006, but it's taken them seven albums to get notices. And this week, they get their first blog #1, with "Two High" which jumps from the 4-spot this week. It's getting airplay on many alt-rock stations, and is bulleted at #16 on this week's Billboard alternative chart (it's nice to be ahead of the curve for a change). Let the Record Play is the name of the band's album. As a result, "Perfect" by Ed Sheeran, drops to #2 after a couple weeks on top.
Speaking of the alternative chart, Alice Merton's "No Roots" sits atop that chart, while it moves from 6 to 3 on mine and will be vying for the top as early as next week. The Neighbourhood and Vance Joy enter the top 10, as does Hegazy, whose "Here to Stay" joins "Alive" in the top 10. Bleachers, Walk the Moon and Foster the People enter the top 20, for the latter, whose "Sit Next to Me" advances 22-17, it's their tenth consecutive top 20 song, going back to their huge hit "Pumped Up Kicks", their first of three chart toppers on SNS.
My top debut this week is the latest single by Tennis, "Modern Woman", more of a slower ballad-type for that duo; it's the third single from their fourth album, Yours Conditionally. However, all of the other debuts were as a result of a ski getaway weekend I took up to Vermont from February 16 to 18. Despite not feeling all too well, I had on WEQX, an independent alternative rock station based in Manchester, Vermont which I had been listening to when I've been up there for 25 years. All of the other debuts were heard that weekend, with some interesting songs, by Amy Shark, Cigarettes After Sex, Jeff Rosenstock, Django Django, and The Vaccines. All but the last two are new to SNS. It's nice to continue to discover new, worthwhile music in spite of the uninspired nature of pop music these days.
