Beck has been a real innovator when it comes to artistry, and perhaps he had been taken for granted until Kanye West attempted to upstage him at the 2015 Grammys (where Beck accepted his "Album of the Year" trophy). Beck is a master writer and plays many of the instruments on his recordings, and has even conducted large orchestras in integrating some of his musical projects.
It amazes me that his only top 10 pop hit, "Loser" in 1994 came with much dissertation from critics as rather "uninspired". But his subsequent works have more that made his case as a serious musician. In an era where rock is being pushed to the sidelines, and more people are listening to anything before 1980 when it comes to that genres, Beck is at least keeping the meaning of rock alive.
Finally, I just had to point out that Matthew Koma's recent SNS top 20 song, "Hard to Love" includes the main chorus (modified somewhat with "thrill" replacing "kill", from "Loser".
Portugal. The Man, after a five-week run at the top, finally dips to #2 with "Feel It Still". The song still bullets at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and it's not entirely impossible that it could retake the top spot here next week. Anyway, the official follow-up, "Live in the Moment", is the Mover of the week, rising from 53-32. There is no real action in the top 10, with the exception of the two Cold War Kids songs moving up with bullets, and Long Island's Offguard, garnering their second top ten song with "Strawberry Moon". The quintet, led by Matt Weiss, has just release their debut EP Set the Scene.
SNS vets are the new entries into the top 20, led by The Palms, with "Levitate", the follow-up to their #1 SNS hit "Push Off", which in its thirtieth week, is hanging in there at #91; Pink, with her seventh's top 20, "What About Us"; George Ezra's second, after "Budapest", with "Don't Matter Now"; and Pageants, with their fifth entry, "Chai".
Last week, we talked about the "American Idol" contestants and "The Voice" coaches invasion of my blog list; well, the Top Debut is another "Idol" alum: Season eleven winner Phillip
Phillips, has his first single from his upcoming third album, "Miles", debuting at #76.
Also debuting is the third single from Ed Sheeran's latest album, "Perfect" at #84, "Shape of You", his #1 song from earlier in the year, is still on the list at #64 in its 31st week. All Time Low, makes its debut (not counting their 2013 "Fool's Holiday" Christmas single), with "Good Times". Luke Combs, who has the number one country song with "When It Rains It Pours", sees that song debut here at #95. The Script has their second SNS entry, (and first since 2010), with "Rain".
