Will Portugal. The Man top that? It has a chance to if it keeps rising on the pop chart, especially if it hits number one. To be honest, in my opinion it's not the best song they've done, but as I have mentioned in prior blogs, it's great to see a band that you've followed for years, get a big hit.
As for follow-ups, last week I added "Rich Friends", also from their Woodstock set; it moves to #75 this week; however, the consensus is that the new official single, "Love In the Moment" is the one getting most of the airplay and will add that in a week or two. After all, if Cold War Kids can have two songs moving up the charts (and both are doing so in the top 20 this week), then Portugal. The Man deserves a shot.
As for the next number one, it looks like it's Beck's to win or lose. "Up All Night" moves from 6 to 3. "Dreams" hit the top spot in 2015 for him. Iration also impresses with a move from 8-5. As mentioned above, Cold War Kids have two songs moving up in the second part of the top 20, with "Invincible" (15-12), and "So Tied Up" (28-17), the latter a duet with Bishop Briggs. Rochester NY outfit Joywave has the Impact award this week with "It's A Trip" (23-16). The other new top 20 entry is Dan Auerbach's second solo outing, "Stand By My Girl" (22-20).
Outside the top 20, Offguard's "Strawberry Moon" is in command with the Mover award. The Palms, Fall Out Boy, and Pageants, also make significant moves.
YOUR 'PLACE' OR MINE: Nick Waterhouse continues in the top 10, with "It's Time", an unexpected gem which topped my list for a week and is still at #8. From this 2016 album Never Twice, as nobody that I am aware of has playing anything from this album (Triple-A, where are you?), I definitely had to pick something as a follow-up. Thus, "Old Place" is the Top Debut at #84. Although it doesn't have that "hot summer of '70 jam" feel to it like the prior song did, it's still retro and actually resembles more of a 1960's garage band-like sound, not unlike The Doughboys. With a few listens, it's bound for my top 20. Weezer had a bit of a comeback of sorts with "Feels Like Summer" hitting my top 20. Their follow-up "Happy Hour" has more of that commercial sound that the band had been lacking during most of this decade. This band has been around for well over twenty years, and always had much potential, but not really explored too much with their last several albums (although they are still getting alternative airplay on them). This one, I think will do the trick and finally get them in my top 10 in the blog era. It enters at #87.
Foreign Air, a duo from Washington DC by way of North Carolina has their first song on SNS, with "Lying". The latest from Grouplove and K. Flay also enter the list.
STUBBORN: You might notice that some songs, after peaking, fall off the chart rapidly, while others seem to just hang out for weeks and weeks after they peak. There seems to be a distinct group of songs that have been doing that on the SNS 100 lately. Most, if not all, had peaked in the top 10 or even #1, but are taking their sweet time in dropping. Ed Sheeran's "Shape Of You" leads the list, but also included are Kings of Leon's "Reverend", Keith Urban's "The Fighter", The Palms' 'Push Off", Fitz & the Tantrums, "Get Right Back", Christina Taylor's '"Don't Look Good in Your T-Shirt Anymore", and Hounds of Winter's "Lesson Learned". Perhaps I had dropped these too early from their peak and just want to hold on to listening to them in active rotation a bit further. Some of them are still talked about by friends as well.
Speaking of Fitz & the Tantrums, who, with two songs still on my list, have continued their mastery of the SNS 100 going back well over four and a half years now. Their most recent, "Fool", which peaked at #3 (breaking a long string of five #1's in a row), and dropped down quickly, has stabilized in the 30's for the fourth week. I had mentioned that the record sort of bombed as it didn't make the rock charts nor the Hot 100 during the summer, and the song was definitely in a pop vein designed to do just that. Well, not so fast. Seems that the song, originally released as a summer record, is slowing climbing the Adult Top 40 list, where it is #19 on the latest Billboard chart for that format. So there's still hope. Then again, this band has made a living out of slow-breaking records. If "Fool", "Get Right Back" or anything they may release coming up, keeps them on my list into February 2018, I may have to have a fifth anniversary commemorative party!
