It's a pretty safe assumption that if you want to really find good, quality music, avoid terrestrial radio, and dig deep with the resources that are available to you: Satellite radio, the Internet and many of the music sites. Or...just be somewhere where there is music piped in.
It's pretty common to go to a public place or establishment and have music pumped through the speakers. I have it at the hotel where I work nights, supermarkets have classic hits back to the 1960's, and various pubs have some alternative music, past and present, or classic R&B (such as the Clark Bar where I frequent each week with my Roselle Park hometown friends.
And once in a while, you hear an awesome song, and you wonder what it is. Is it new or old, for example. Who is the artist? Thanks to SoundHound I was able to figure out a song that came onto my like gangbusters last week. Sounding very retro, a piece that is centered around the keyboards. Out came my trusty smartphone to figure out what it is. Turns out, it's an artist named Nick Waterhouse, and the song was "It's Time". This song could have come out of the late 60's and early 70's with artists like El Chicano, early War and other jazz/funk ensembles from that time period. But the time stamp showed this came out just last December.
So of course, I looked up Waterhouse, and he is 31 years old, from Santa Ana, California, and the song hails from his third album Never Twice. And while the organ is a vital part of the song, Waterhouse actually is a guitarist. Among his influences are John Lee Hooker and Van Morrison. This song is a nice, laid back excursion and it's best just to take it all in. He is part of an Orange County California music scene and has played with Ty Segall, who topped SNS five years back with "I Am Not A Game" and who also enters the chart this week with the change-of-pace "Orange Color Queen". Cold War Kids, who've also had a chart-topper here and current in the top 10 with "Love Is Mystical", are also considered part of the scene.
However, Waterhouse stands unique, or at least can be considered another retro-styled artist and you can play "It's Time" along with the likes of Leon Bridges and you can dream you've gone back in time.
The Palms hold at #1, and a big thanks to my Facebook friend Elizabeth Beal for checking out that song and liking it. As I mentioned above, you need to dig a little deeper to get some good music, but it's definitely out there! The Hounds of Winter get their fourth straight top 20 as "I Get You" enters into that part of the list, along with two other SNS veterans, both from the Empire State: Lana Del Ray from Lake Placid, and The Big Takeover from the mid Hudson Valley.
