Like much of what passes as "country" these days, the song has more of a pop slant to it, but in 2017 music in general isn't like it used to be. Traditional pop records are no more on the Top 40 side of things, thus the country field has taken up the slack of both pop and rock music, a trend that 40 years ago was probably inconceivable. But it's a song I love, and it had that steady climb up my list, meaning that it constantly grew on me. Helping out was when I posted it on Facebook a couple weeks back and it garnered twelve likes---unheard of for a current song.
"The Fighter" is the first song I've added from Urban, who has been around since the early 1990's and garnered his first hit in 1999. He was most recently a judge in the final seasons of the original American Idol (by "original", I mean that that show is being revived for next seasons, but more on that on another blog). As for Underwood, a former winner on that show, and arguably the most successful artist to emerge (along with Kelly Clarkson), it's her second SNS song; she reached #62 with "Undo It" in the first few weeks of my blog.
Finally, "The Fighter" is one of three country songs in my top 20 this week, with Thomas Rhett's "Star of the Show" moving up to #5 for his second big hit here. And moving down to #17 is Christine Taylors' "Don't Look Good in My T-Shirt". Like Rachel Allyn, she is not established, but that may come to an end in a couple weeks or so. Taylor's song is starting to break out regionally; and her song comes in at #77 on Music Row's chart. She hasn't yet made Billboard's top 60 chart, but if she does, she will be the first "SNS Up-and-Comer" to hit a major Billboard list as lead artist; Phoebe Ryan did make it as a featured artist with The Chainsmokers, but has come so close on her own, racking up entries on the Billboard/Twitter Up-and-Coming artist chart. Close but no cigar. Ryan's latest SNS hit, drops from its #5 peak to #11 this week. The Charlotte NC native has also been nominated in the Carolina Music Awards for best female country artist.
Three songs that have been addicting to me are making big strides: Foster the People's "SHC" jumps from 23-8, and Miley Cyrus' "Malibu" rises 28-9. Cyrus' song dropped from its top 10 peak on the Billboard down to its current #26 there, but radio play is just starting to kick in. It should be interesting though, how fans of Cyrus and pop music will take to this awesome, down to earth, soulful, gutsy song. I love it, and I wasn't really ever a Cyrus fan. Finally, Nick Waterhouse's retro-sounding "It's Time" jumps from 52-25.
As for debuts, they are led by Dan Auerbach's "Shine On Me". It's the second "side" project for him apart from his band, The Black Keys, who obviously are on hiatus. Since that duo's last album, Auerbach has released an album with The Arcs, and back in2009, he released his first solo album, as well as Blackroc. So Auerbach seems to be the Jack White of the 2010's, if not the Eric Clapton, who was in numerous bands in the 1960's.
Pageants also debuts with "Lingr". I had wondered whatever happened to this band, led by keyboardist Rebecca Coleman. Coleman, a former member of Avi Buffalo which hit SNS #1 back in 2010 with "What's In It For?", left that outfit to form Pageants. They've made my list three times, all in the top 20, with "Musing of the Tide" reaching the top spot in 2013, making Coleman the only artist in the blog era to hit #1 with two different bands (something Auerbach hasn't done....yet); they also had "Edible Rust" (#5 in 2012) and "August Moon" (#17 in 2013). I had to check out their Facebook page to see what they were up to, and noticed the new one was released at the beginning of 2016. The sound of them is their usual dream-pop style, and their fourth top 20 will be on the way.
