FITZMILARITY: Taking a look at the top of the list this week is a familiar face. "Complicated" moves 3-1 to become Fitz and the Tantrum's 9th number one in this six year history of SNS. No other act has more than four. Even with the quirkiness of their third, eponymous album, it's their second chart-topper from it. "HandClap", their first #1 from the album, drops out of the top 20 this week.
M83's "Go" advances to #2, the spot they held four years ago with "Reunion", while "Dark Necessities" by Red Hot Chili Peppers, drops to #3 after a five-week run at the top. Paul Czekaj and Kaleo hold down the last two positions in the top 5, with the latter reaching #1 on the Alternative chart this chart week.
Jersey Girl-turned Californian Phoebe Ryan, one of the darlings of Taylor Swift, has the highest new entry into the top 20 with "Chronic", her third SNS top 20 song; with Santana right behind, with "Blues Magic" off of their original lineup reunion set. Finally, Charles Kelley slips into the upper echelon with 'Lonely Girl".
RESURGING: Often, songs which are going down the chart will, for whatever reason, will start moving back up the chart. Although they may have already peaks in my likability of the song, others will talk about, post, or the song will be moving up key national charts. Three songs fit that description here. Twenty-One Pilots' "Ride" regains its bullet and moves 38-30 as the song continues to get pop airplay, as well as remaining in the Alternative top 10. "The Sound of Silence", the Simon and Garfunkel cover by Disturbed has gotten many posts by friends on Facebook, and after trolling the bottom of the list the last several weeks, jumps up to #75. Finally, although it peaked last spring, DNCE's "Cake By the Ocean" has been referenced by many friends lately, resulting in a reverse course from 88-77. At 25 weeks on the list, it's the oldest song on the chart, which has seen much big turnaround the last several months as no song really has had the impact that "6 AM", "Thinking Out Loud", "Ex's and Oh's" or "Gimme All Your Love" had in recent memory.
NEW: Speaking of "Ex's and Oh's", it's Elle King who has this week's Top Debut, with "Good Girls" which is from the recent remake of "Ghostbusters", the much-maligned reboot with a female cast. This continues the revival of songs from movie soundtracks; Pink and Hozier also have songs from recent soundtracks. King debuts at #81, followed closely by Jersey Girl Rachel Allyn, with her cover of the Buffalo Springfield chestnut, "For What It's Worth". Rachel has been getting some notice with New York's NASH-FM country radio station at 94.7, as she is in the running to be a finalist in a national contest "Search for the Next Country Star". Her rendition of Adele's "Hello" was well done, and she advanced to Round 2 of the competition. Let's wish Rachel the best of luck in this competition which will award a contract with a major recording label. Go get 'em, Rachel!
The other two debuts of note include Bluesman Ray Lamontagne's follow-up to "Hey No Pressure", a #1 SNS song, with "The Changing Man", and Paul Czekaj's latest single, "A Place I Once Called Home" also enters. The Jersey laureate now has three songs on the SNS 100 with "That Old New Jersey" and "Up in the Sky" still on the list. Once again, Paul looks back on his growing up in the Garden State, and the many homes that were a part of growing up here. It's another winner, for sure!
UNCOMMONER: I was all set to add another "local" song, the new single by the Hudson Valley New York-based Us Commoners, "Long Road Back Around", its follow-up to the #3 "The Hot Spot". The single was announced via Facebook post on August 12, but nearly a month later, it is still not available for download. One of my rules of inclusion on my SNS 100 is that a song has to be available for download. This, in a way, is the reason why Czekaj has three songs on the list, as "Up in the Sky" and "That Old New Jersey" were released months before I added them as they weren't available until the release of his latest album, at which time, I added the songs rather closely apart.
As for the Commoners, who have other songs in the can, the only available songs currently on the major websites are the aforementioned "The Hot Spot" and last year's holiday offering "Christmas and Hanukkah". I know streaming has pretty much replaced downloads as the current method of selling (or in that case, "renting") music, but for me, who still has an IPOD and whose SNS 100 comprises a current playlist for these songs, (and with lack of radio airplay on many of them), it's the only way I can get acclimated to these songs. Us Commoners were actually late in putting out "The Hot Spot", and between that and the two Czekaj singles (plus a few national acts), I may have to rethink that strategy. There is a video for "Long Road Back Around" as well as another imminent single release "Falling", and perhaps it's time for another look at how I add songs, and maybe even look into streaming (if my smartphone data charges would allow).
PAIGE'S WORLD: Finally, I heard the new single by The Hounds of Winter, "Oh Paige", it is a winner. Look for a debut in the next couple of weeks or so.
