CLAP TOPS: Fitz & the Tantrums hold the top spot for a third week with "HandClap", although it is now in a holding position. Nationally, it is still holding at #6 on Billboard's alternative chart but is still bulleting. We are a few weeks away from the release of the band's third, self-titled album. Meanwhile, "Last Raindrop" from their prior album More Than Just a Dream still hangs in there, moving back up a notch to #95. At least one song from that sophomore effort has been on my list since February 16, 2013, when "Out of My League" debuted. Three years and three months is nothing to sneeze about!
Jumping up into the runner-up spot is "My Mistake" by the reconstituted South Jersey band Smash Palace. This band has an interesting history, with their 1985 debut on the verge of stardom, coming in on a Philly rock wave that was prevalent in the mid-80's with bands like The Hooters and Cinderella. They got airplay on top 40 station WPST, and the song "Living On the Borderline" made my year-end top 100 of 1985 at #84. But their follow-up didn't see the light of day until thirteen years later, eons of musical styles had passed. Both this song and their prior SNS top 10 "Haddontown" do have a retro feel to it, and so far I haven't gotten tired of it at all. It would be nice to see them play at a festival in the area; I'll have to check that out.
Kaleo's "Way Down We Go" and Ray Lamontagne's "Hey No Pressure" also make significant moves, and both songs are still in my head, especially the latter, which seems like a great song for my upcoming camping trip. Santana also advances to #9, with their original Woodstock-era lineup, "Anywhere You Want to Go".
RACHEL'S BACK: The biggest entry into the top 20 is "Next Year's Girl" by aspiring Jersey country girl Rachel Allyn. The title track from her latest EP of the same name, she advances from #23 to #17 becoming her eleventh consecutive SNS top 20 song. Only Fitz and the Tantrums have a longer active streak. Also entering the top 20 is Wild Belle's "Throw Down Your Guns", the sibling duo's fifth consecutive top 20er.
STILL RED HOT: The top debut is by veteran act Red Hot Chili Peppers, with "Dark Necessities". Although the band which formed in 1984 is not the oldest band in the SNS 100 (that award would go to Santana), this band's resilience is very impressive, considering the change in musical styles over the years. Then again, the band had a hip-hop presence in their rock for much of their history, which should fit in nicely nowadays. This song is from their forthcoming The Getaway, which drops June 17. It's their second album to be released in the SNS era; 2011's I'm With You hit #2 on the album chart on Billboard, and yielded two SNS top 5 hits in "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" and "Monarchy and Roses", and the new one poises to do the same as it debuts at #60. Was it already two years plus ago when they performed the halftime show with Bruno Mars right here at MetLife Stadium for Super Bowl 48?
Other debuts include The Revivalists, "Wish I Knew You", the follow-up to the Top 20 "Keep Going", and Catfish & the Bottlemen's "Soundcheck". This is the lead single from their sophomore album The Ride. Their first set, The Balcony yielded two SNS top 25 efforts in "Kathleen" and "Cocoon". Weezer takes another stab at the chart with their quirky "King of the World" from their latest effort. Two newcomers, Bishop and Pop Etc, also enter the list this week.
