It's the Time of Year Again (SNS 12/1/2013)

FASTER THAN A SPEEDING BULLET:   Where does the time go?.     I'm a few days late with this, so it will be pretty brief.     My week spent in Florida as a nice and pretty serene one.     There was a good crowd at my wife's aunt and uncle's place with her cousins who live nearby coming and going.     I had kept busy, mostly watching football and geocaching, and actually got to ride on an air boat with one of the cousins.     Music did creep up into the conscience at times, mostly from the American Music Awards on the Sunday (I only got to catch a glimpse of Imagine Dragons playing, so I wasn't paying much attention).   I caught The Voice, but my favorite, Saddle River's own Caroline Parnell, got voted out, but that is one nice talent to watch in the future if she pursues it.     Barb's uncle Allen is a country music fan, and when he shuttled me to a nearby park to cache, he had NASH FM on, which is a nationwide country music station broadcasting over various frequencies around the country.     Some good tunes, with the only standout for me being the latest by the Eli Young Band, "Drunk Last Night".  I will add the song soon.  In fact, there's only one country song left on the SNS 100, Blake Shelton's "Boys Round Here", so it's time for a bit of a replenishment.

I did get some music in during my time there on my own, with my iPod, on the flight down and back, as well as hanging out by the pool (although I didn't go in).   The weather in Florida was actually cool for the area, with most days not much over 70 degrees (it did hit 80 one time), and very breezy.  One night it got down to 39.    But I loved the breeze and it was very comfortable, especially when you compared it to the cold and snow back home.

MUST BE THE HOLIDAYS:   The cold and bit of snow, along with the fact that we're now in December means one thing.   Christmas songs!  If you're on my Facebook page, you will see that I'm counting down, once again, my Top 100 holiday songs of the season.    As in years past, I will blog separately about that list, which encompasses songs throughout the years, up to 2012.    The Killers' "I Feel It In My Bones", which set a record for the fastest climb to #1 last December (since tied by "Out of My League" by Fitz & the Tantrums) is the only new entry from last year's "season class" to make the 100 this year.

Two more seasonal songs join Straight No Chaser and Kelly Clarkson, who both debuted last week.    Paul Czekaj who has illustrated so far this year, the state's strength and comeback after Sandy, the joys of the beach, life on a motorcycle, now adds the holiday season to his repertoire.     Once again, the accompanying video shows scenes around this area, mostly at New York's Rockefeller Center free and skating rink, a great place to be this time of year.    It's a mid-tempo beat, and a very sentimental one as well.   It stands up to much of the classics out there without sounding like anything else.   Nice job.  Paul debuts at #96 this week.

A bit more unusual is "Fool's Holiday", by All Time Low, a band from Towson, Maryland.   They've been around since 2005, releasing five albums, most recently 2012's Don't Panic.   Their last three releases have hit Billboard's Album chart, but this is their first appearance on SNS.  This one is a hard rockin' mid tempo song, with around the same tempo as the Czekaj tune.   It's got the requisite jingle bells in the background, but this is a bouncy rocker.   The song enters at #99.

Still to come are the annual Killers song, "Christmas in L.A.", which will debut next week, and I'm hoping to see Tom Corea's Bad Attitude project out soon as well; he was mixing the song in his East Hanover NJ studio during Thanksgiving week.    Plus of course, anything else that stands out.     I've pretty much opted for "originals" this year rather than the standard covers, it's not that I don't like them, but they've been done so much that new versions don't really put a spin on it, but I'll add a couple before the big day gets there.

(Note: It's later in the day, and Tom just posted the new Bad Attitude single, "Merry Christmas Anyway".  Holy Cow!  it's one awesome rocker.  Too late to be included on my SNS 100 on this edition, look for a big debut next week, assuming it's available for download.)

ALSO DEBUTING:   The Top Debut this week is "Tonight I'm Perfect" by Danish band New Politics, the follow-up to the fun hit "Harlem".    The new one is not the joyous romp of the previous song, but still up-tempo and perhaps a bit more introspective.   It is upbeat, however, and it prevents the band from being a sort of a novelty act.   A worthy follow-up; both songs are on their latest, A Bad Girl in Harlem.

IN SYNC, PARTY II:    Lorde's "Royals", which has been going thru my head a lot lately, ascends to the top spot, matching the Billboard's #1 designation that it's held for the past nine weeks.   It's only the second time that both charts had the same number one song; it previously happened with fun.'s "We Are Young" early last year.    Three other songs, Pink's "Just Give Me A Reason", and Adele's  "Rolling in the Deep" and "Someone Like You", we #1 on both charts, but never in the same week.
