Once again this season, I counted down my top 100 favorite holiday songs of all time, beginning on December 1st, and completing the list with #1, around 11 PM on Christmas Eve. This was the fourth year that I had done this. It started non-chalantly in 2010 when I counted down my 30 favorites; it became a full-blown 100-song countdown the next year. This year once again I posted the list, and I think I got more feedback on it than ever before.
Along with my preferences, the list does reflect my Facebook friends' taste as well. I tallied up last year's "likes" and positive comments, and also took note of the songs they posted or referenced on their own, and that influenced this years' ranking as well. A total of 18 songs received ten or more likes or comments, headed by Bing Crosby and David Bowie's 'Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" with 16, one short of last year's record of 17 set by "Santa Baby" by Eartha Kitt, who was one of four records that received 14. Three songs drew goose eggs: Chicago's "Jolly Old St. Nicholas", Mannheim Steamroller's 'Silent Night" and Tom Petty's 'Christmas All Over Again". Other "disappointments" included what could be my favorite holiday composition, "Sleigh Ride", f which there were four versions on my top 50. Debbie Gibson's version, the lowest of the four, had three likes, which equaled the total of the other three: Leroy Anderson, The Ronettes, and The Ventures could only garnder one each.
Some people didn't like The Chipmunks' "Chipmunk Song", but 14 people did; ditto for "Dominick the Donkey". Adam Sandler's 'Chanukah Song", despite that holiday starting in late November, nonetheless garnered ten voites.
