The Indie Beat (SNS 6/30/2013)

As we start drifting behind, and contemplating yet another frozen week or two.  It is actually July 13th and had gotten back from a July 4th weekend in Wildwood.one with all sunny weather and a despite from the rain that has basically befallen us since mid-May.    But there's three new songs from relatively new indie rock bands, and it's time to get to it.

The top three debuts on my SNS list are singles from these "kind-of" established new indie bands, and they all debut in the 70's and are follow-ups to top 20 hits in the upper echelon of my chart.

First up is "Purple Yellow Red & Blue" by Portland OR, indie/psychedelic rock outfit Portugal. The Man.   It's the third album that I have followed by them in the SNS era, and it's the second single from their third album Evil Friends.   Incidentally, the first single, the title track is still moving up rapidly; in its seventh week, it moves 17-11; however radio stations are jumping on the second single, and I didn't want to wait any longer adding it.   It's a bit more "contemporary" feel then their most recent output, but that great sound is still there, and I love it just the same.  It has a nice beat to it, the harmonies are in great shape, and it builds up to a nice finish.   No doubt "Purple..." will join the title track in the top 20 in no time.  They are on tour, and although New York's Terminal 5 on September 27 is the nearest to here that you'll see them, if you can get to the West Coast this month, you'll get the added pleasure of our old friends Avi Buffalo opening up for them.    Glad to see THAT band still kicking around, but it's been a few years since their last effort.  C'mon Avi, how about some new material?

Right behind P.TM at #75 is "Ways to Go" by Grouplove.  You may remember them from their two Top 20 SNS hits, "Itchin' On a Photograph", and the #1 Alternative "Tongue Tied".   Those songs were from their debut; the new one is from the forthcoming sophomore set Spreading Rumors. The LA-based "indie-electronica outfit, continues in that vein of the prior song, with a touch of pop thrown into the proceedings.   A nice start to hopefully another successful set.  They will be part of a festival package this summer with bands like Kings of Leon, Vampire Weekend, The Cure, Franz Ferdinand, Artic Monkeys and Phoenix, among others.

Finally, the last of the top three debuts is the new single by Paramore, "Still Into You".  The Tennessee-based band fronted by Hayley Williams, released their fourth, eponymous-titled album back in April, and the first single "Now" made my top 20.  I like this song better than the previous single.   William's vocals are in fine shape.    I had read descriptions that her voice is reminiscent of a Avril Lavigne or Kelly Clarkson; in spite of the rock approach, I can see that, especially in the case of Clarkson.    Great song.   They're currently touring Latin America, the UK and Europe before heading to New Orleeans' Voodoo Festival in late September.

AT THE TOP:   Foxygen holds for a second stanza at #1 with "San Francisco", but next time, it will most likely be replaced by either Daft Punk or Paul Czekaj.    "At the Beach" storms from 15 to 4.   "Harlem" by New Politics also has a shot to slip in there.  We shall see.  Phoenix has their second top 20 from their latest album (and fourth overall) with "Trying to Be Cool".    Advancing towards the top 20 with a shot at it maybe next week are "High School Lover" by Cayucas, a recent Brian Sniatkowski pick of the week, and "I Go Alone" by The Thermals, knocking on the door at #21, on the verge of their second top 20 SNS hit ("I Don't Believe You" hit #5 in 2011)..

READY FOR THE COUNTRY:   Aside from Rachel Allyn, there is nary a country song on SNS, which is pretty unusual.    Many country songs have permeated my list over the years, but the two Allyn songs are all there is right now.   That should change next week.   Note on the Tremors list that new stuff from Blake Shelton, Florida Georgia Line, and Darius Rucker are poised to enter next week.
